Job 24
1 Pourquoi les temps des représailles ne sont-ils pas réglés par le Tout-Puissant, et ses fidèles ne voient-ils pas se lever ses jours de justice?
Times are not hid from the Almighty: but they that know him, know not his days.
2 Il en est qui reculent les bornes, qui ravissent des troupeaux et les conduisent au pâturage.
Some have removed landmarks, have taken away flocks by force, and fed them.
3 Ils emmènent l’âne des orphelins et saisissent comme gage le bœuf de la veuve.
They have driven away the ass of the fatherless, and have taken away the widow’s ox for a pledge.
4 Ils forcent les indigents à se détourner du chemin; les faibles dans le pays sont tous obligés de se cacher.
They have overturned the way of the poor, and have oppressed together the meek of the earth.
5 Voyez, tels des ânes sauvages dans le désert, ces malheureux se mettent en campagne pour leur besogne, recherchant quelque nourriture: la lande leur fournit du pain pour leurs enfants.
Others like wild asses in the desert go forth to their work: by watching for a prey they get bread for their children.
6 Dans les champs, ils recueillent leurs provisions; ils ramassent quelques herbes dans la vigne du méchant.
They reap the field that is not their own, and gather the vintage of his vineyard whom by violence they have oppressed.
7 Ils passent la nuit tout nus, faute de vêtements; ils n’ont pas de couverture pour se garer du froid.
They send men away naked, taking away their clothes who have no covering in the cold:
8 Ils sont trempés par les averses des montagnes; manquant d’abri, ils s’accrochent au rocher.
Who are wet, with the showers of the mountains, and having no covering embrace the stones.
9 On enlève l’orphelin du sein de sa mère, et on pressure le pauvre.
They have violently robbed the fatherless, and stripped the poor common people.
10 On les réduit à circuler nus, sans vêtements à transporter des gerbes tout en souffrant la faim,
From the naked and them that go without clothing, and from the hungry they have taken away the ears of corn.
11 à extraire l’huile dans l’enclos de leurs exploiteurs, à fouler les pressoirs tout en étant altérés de soif.
They have taken their rest at noon among the stores of them, who after having trodden the winepresses suffer thirst.
12 De l’enceinte des villes la population fait entendre un concert de plaintes, l’âme des victimes crie vengeance, et Dieu n’a pas de flétrissure pour ces crimes!
Out of the cities they have made men to groan, and the soul of the wounded hath cried out, and God doth not suffer it to pass unrevenged.
13 Ces bandits détestent la lumière, n’en connaissent pas les voies et n’en suivent pas les sentiers.
They have been rebellious to the light, they have not known his ways, neither have they returned by his paths.
14 A l’approche du jour, le meurtrier se lève, assassine le pauvre et l’indigent; la nuit, il se comporte en voleur.
The murderer riseth at the very break of day, he killeth the needy, and the poor man: but in the night he will be as a thief.
15 Les yeux de l’adultère guettent le crépuscule du soir: "Nul ne me verra", dit-il, et il se couvre le visage d’un voile.
The eye of the adulterer observeth darkness, saying: No eye shall see me: and he will cover his face.
16 A la faveur de l’obscurité, il entre par effraction dans les maisons; le jour, il se tient claquemuré: il ne sait ce que c’est que la lumière.
He diggeth through houses in the dark, as in the day they had appointed for themselves, and they have not known the light.
17 Pour tous ces gens, la nuit noire est un clair matin, tant ils sont familiarisés avec l’horreur des ténèbres.
If the morning suddenly appear, it is to them the shadow of death: and they walk in darkness as if it were in light.
18 Parfois ils sont une épave légère flottant sur l’eau, leur sort est maudit sur terre; ils cessent de prendre le chemin des vignes.
He is light upon the face of the water: cursed be his portion on the earth, let him not walk by the way of the vineyards.
19 Le sol altéré, la chaleur engloutissent les eaux de neige; de même le Cheol ceux qui ont prévariqué. (Sheol h7585)
Let him pass from the snow waters to excessive heat, and his sin even to hell. (Sheol h7585)
20 Ils sont vite oubliés du sein qui les porta, la vermine se repaît' d’eux avec délices; plus jamais il n’est fait mention d’eux: l’iniquité est brisée comme un arbre.
Let mercy forget him: may worms be his sweetness: let him be remembered no more, but be broken in pieces as an unfruitful tree.
21 Ils exploitaient la femme stérile, qui n’a pas d’enfants, et ne faisaient pas de bien à la veuve.
For he hath fed the barren that beareth not, and to the widow he hath done no good.
22 Mais trop souvent il fait durer les tyrans par sa force: ils se redressent, alors qu’ils n’attendaient plus rien de la vie.
He hath pulled down the strong by his might: and when he standeth up, he shall not trust to his life.
23 Il leur donne de quoi vivre en sécurité et avec une entière confiance; ses yeux sont ouverts sur leurs voies.
God hath given him place for penance, and he abuseth it unto pride: but his eyes are upon his ways.
24 Elevés de la sorte, en peu de temps ils disparaissent; ils s’évanouissent, ravis par la mort, comme tout le monde, et se flétrissent comme la tête d’un épi.
They are lifted up for a little while and shall not stand, and shall be brought down as all things, and shall be taken away, and as the tops of the ears of corn they shall be broken.
25 N’En est-il pas ainsi? Qui osera me démentir et réduire à néant mes paroles?
And if it be not so, who can convince me that I have lied, and set my words before God?
