Jérémie 7

1 Parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de l’Eternel comme suit:

The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,

2 "Place-toi à la porte de la maison de l’Eternel, et prononce là le discours que voici en disant: Ecoutez la parole de l’Eternel, vous tous, gens de Juda, qui entrez par ces portes pour vous prosterner devant l’Eternel!

Take your place in the doorway of the Lord's house, and give out this word there, and say, Give ear to the word of the Lord, all you of Judah who come inside these doors to give worship to the Lord.

3 Ainsi parle l’Eternel-Cebaot, Dieu d’Israël: Amendez vos voies et vos oeuvres, et je vous laisserai résider en ce lieu.

The Lord of armies, the God of Israel, says, Let your ways and your doings be changed for the better and I will let you go on living in this place.

4 Ne vous fiez pas à cette formule trompeuse: "C’Est ici le sanctuaire de l’Eternel, le sanctuaire de l’Eternel, le sanctuaire de l’Eternel!"

Put no faith in false words, saying, The Temple of the Lord, the Temple of the Lord, the Temple of the Lord, are these.

5 Car si vous corrigez sérieusement vos voies et vos oeuvres, si vous pratiquez une justice sévère dans vos relations réciproques;

For if your ways and your doings are truly changed for the better; if you truly give right decisions between a man and his neighbour;

6 si vous vous abstenez d’opprimer l’étranger, l’orphelin et la veuve, de répandre du sang innocent en ce lieu, et de suivre des dieux étrangers, pour votre malheur,

If you are not cruel to the man from a strange country, and to the child without a father, and to the widow, and do not put the upright to death in this place, or go after other gods, causing damage to yourselves:

7 alors seulement je vous laisserai résider ici, dans le pays que j’ai donné à vos ancêtres, de siècle en siècle.

Then I will let you go on living in this place, in the land which I gave to your fathers in the past and for ever.

8 Mais voici! Vous vous fiez à des formules trompeuses, dont la valeur est nulle.

See, you put your faith in false words which are of no profit.

9 Eh quoi! Vous allez voler, tuer, commettre des adultères, faire de faux serments, encenser Baal et suivre des dieux étrangers, que vous ne connaissez point;

Will you take the goods of others, put men to death, and be untrue to your wives, and take false oaths, and have perfumes burned to the Baal, and go after other gods which are strange to you;

10 puis, vous venez vous présenter devant moi, dans ce temple qui porte mon nom, vous écriant: "Nous sommes sauvés!" pour pratiquer encore toutes ces mêmes abominations!

And come and take your place before me in this house, which is named by my name, and say, We have been made safe; so that you may do all these disgusting things?

11 Mais elle est donc devenue à vos yeux une caverne de brigands, cette maison qui porte mon nom! Eh bien, moi aussi, j’ai vu les choses de cette façon, dit l’Eternel.

Has this house, which is named by my name, become a hole of thieves to you? Truly I, even I, have seen it, says the Lord.

12 Mais rendez-vous donc à la demeure que j’avais à Silo, où tout d’abord j’avais fait résider mon nom, et voyez comment je l’ai traitée à cause de la perversité de mon peuple Israël!

But go now to my place which was in Shiloh, where I put my name at first, and see what I did to it because of the evil-doing of my people Israel.

13 Et maintenant, puisque vous commettez tous ces actes, dit l’Eternel, que je me suis adressé à vous sans cesse, et dès la première heure, sans être écouté par vous, que je vous ai appelés sans obtenir de réponse,

And now, because you have done all these works, says the Lord, and I sent my word to you, getting up early and sending, but you did not give ear; and my voice came to you, but you gave no answer:

14 je traiterai la maison qui porte mon nom et vous inspire cette confiance ainsi que la résidence que je vous ai assurée, à vous et à vos ancêtres, comme j’ai traité Silo;

For this reason I will do to the house which is named by my name, and in which you have put your faith, and to the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh.

15 je vous rejetterai de devant ma face, comme j’ai rejeté tous vos frères, toute la race d’Ephraïm.

And I will send you away from before my face, as I have sent away all your brothers, even all the seed of Ephraim.

16 Quant à toi, n’intercède pas pour ce peuple, ne profère en sa faveur ni supplication ni prière, ne cherche pas à me fléchir, car je ne t’écouterai pas.

And as for you (Jeremiah), make no prayers for this people, send up no cry or prayer for them, make no request for them to me: for I will not give ear.

17 Ne vois-tu pas ce qu’ils font dans les villes de Juda et dans les rues de Jérusalem?

Do you not see what they are doing in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

18 Les enfants ramassent du bois, leurs pères allument le feu et les femmes pétrissent de la pâte pour confectionner des gâteaux en l’honneur de la reine des cieux, pour faire des libations aux dieux étrangers, avec l’intention de me blesser.

The children go for wood, the fathers get the fire burning, the women are working the paste to make cakes for the queen of heaven, and drink offerings are drained out to other gods, moving me to wrath.

19 Mais est-ce moi qu’ils blessent? dit l’Eternel; n’est-ce pas plutôt eux-mêmes, à leur propre confusion?

Are they moving me to wrath? says the Lord; are they not moving themselves to their shame?

20 C’Est pourquoi ainsi parle l’Eternel: "Voici, ma colère enflammée va fondre sur ces lieux, sur les hommes et les animaux, sur les arbres des champs et les fruits de la terre; elle brûlera sans s’éteindre.

So this is what the Lord God has said: See, my wrath and my passion will be let loose on this place, on man and beast, and on the trees of the field, and on the produce of the earth; it will be burning and will not be put out.

21 Ainsi parle l’Eternel-Cebaot, Dieu d’Israël: "Joignez vos holocaustes à vos autres sacrifices et mangez-en la chair.

These are the words of the Lord of armies, the God of Israel: Put your burned offerings with your offerings of beasts, and take flesh for your food.

22 Car je n’ai rien dit, rien ordonné à vos ancêtres, le jour où je les ai fait sortir du pays d’Egypte, en fait d’holocauste ni de sacrifice.

For I said nothing to your fathers, and gave them no orders, on the day when I took them out of Egypt, about burned offerings or offerings of beasts:

23 Mais voici l’ordre que je leur ai adressé, savoir: "Ecoutez ma voix, et je serai votre Dieu et vous serez mon peuple; suivez de tout point la voie que je vous prescris, afin d’être heureux."

But this was the order I gave them, saying, Give ear to my voice, and I will be your God, and you will be my people: go in all the way ordered by me, so that all may be well for you.

24 Or, ils n’ont point obéi, point prêté l’oreille; ils ont suivi leurs inspirations, tes instincts de leur coeur vicieux, ils ont rétrogradé au lieu d’avancer.

But they took no note and did not give ear, but were guided by the thoughts and the pride of their evil hearts, going back and not forward.

25 Depuis le jour où vos ancêtres sortirent du pays d’Egypte jusqu’à présent, je vous ai envoyé tous mes serviteurs, les prophètes, je les ai envoyés journellement, chaque matin;

From the day when your fathers came out of Egypt till this day, I have sent my servants the prophets to you, getting up early every day and sending them:

26 mais ils ne m’ont pas écouté, ils n’ont pas prêté l’oreille; ils ont raidi leur nuque, ils ont fait pis que leurs pères.

But still they took no note and would not give ear, but they made their necks stiff, doing worse than their fathers.

27 Et tu leur diras toutes ces choses, mais ils ne t’écouteront point; et tu les interpelleras, mais ils te laisseront sans réponse.

And you are to say all these words to them, but they will not give ear to you: you will send out your voice to them, but they will give no answer.

28 Tu leur diras alors: "Voici le peuple qui est sourd à la voix de l’Eternel, son Dieu, et rebelle aux remontrances; chez lui la fidélité est morte, elle est bannie de sa bouche!"

And you are to say to them, This is the nation which has not given ear to the voice of their God, or taken his teaching to heart: good faith is dead and is cut off from their mouths.

29 Coupe ta belle chevelure et jette-la à terre, exhale tes plaintes sur les hauteurs, car l’Eternel repousse, abandonne la race qui a encouru sa colère.

Let your hair be cut off, O Jerusalem, and let it go, and let a song of grief go up on the open hilltops; for the Lord is turned away from the generation of his wrath and has given them up.

30 Oui, les enfants de Juda ont fait ce que je réprouve, dit l’Eternel, ils ont placé leurs idoles immondes dans la maison qui porte mon nom, pour la profaner.

For the children of Judah have done what is evil in my eyes, says the Lord: they have put their disgusting images in the house which is named by my name, making it unclean.

31 Ils ont bâti les hauts-lieux du Tofèt, dans la vallée de Ben-Hinnom, pour brûler leurs fils et leurs filles par le feu, chose que je n’ai point commandée et qui est loin de ma pensée.

And they have put up the high place of Topheth in the valley of the son of Hinnom, burning their sons and their daughters there in the fire; a thing which was not ordered by me and never came into my mind.

32 C’Est pourquoi, voici que des jours viennent, dit l’Eternel, où il sera question, non plus de Tofèt ni de vallée de Ben-Hinnom, mais de vallée d’égorgement, et où l’on enterrera les morts à Tofèt, faute de place.

For this cause, the days are coming, says the Lord, when it will no longer be named Topheth, or, The valley of the son of Hinnom, but, The valley of Death: for they will put the dead into the earth in Topheth till there is no more room.

33 Et les cadavres de ce peuple serviront de pâture aux oiseaux du ciel et aux bêtes de la terre, sans que personne les trouble.

And the bodies of this people will be food for the birds of heaven and for the beasts of the earth; and there will be no one to send them away.

34 Et je ferai disparaître des villes de Juda et des rues de Jérusalem les cris de joie et les chants d’allégresse, la voix du fiancé et la voix de la fiancée, car ce pays sera devenu un désert.

And in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, I will put an end to the laughing voices, the voice of joy and the voice of the newly-married man and the voice of the bride: for the land will become a waste.
