Jérémie 51
1 Ainsi parle l’Eternel: "Voici, je vais susciter contre Babel et contre les habitants de la Chaldée un vent destructeur.
Thus sayth the Lord, Beholde, I wil raise vp against Babel, and against the inhabitants that lift vp their heart against me, a destroying wind,
2 Je lancerai sur Babel des barbares pour la secouer comme dans un van et faire le vide dans son territoire. Oui, au jour du malheur, ils la cerneront de toutes parts.
And wil send vnto Babel fanners that shall fanne her, and shall empty her land: for in the day of trouble they shalbe against her on euery side.
3 Que l’archer ne bande pas son arc, qu’il ne revête pas sa cuirasse! Quant-à vous, n’épargnez pas ses jeunes gens, exterminez toute son armée.
Also to the bender that bendeth his bowe, and to him that lifteth himselfe vp in his brigandine, will I say, Spare not her yong men, but destroy all her hoste.
4 Qu’ils tombent sur la terre des Chaldéens, frappés à mort, et dans ses rues, transpercés par l’épée!
Thus the slaine shall fall in the lande of the Caldeans, and they that are thrust through in her streetes.
5 Certes, Israël non plus que Juda n’est veuf de son Dieu, l’Eternel-Cebaot, tandis que le pays des Chaldéens déborde de crimes à l’égard du Saint d’Israël.
For Israel hath bene no widowe, nor Iudah from his God, from the Lord of hostes, though their lande was filled with sinne against the holy one of Israel.
6 Fuyez, sortez de Babel, sauvez-vous tous, afin de ne pas périr pour son crime, car c’est un temps de représailles pour l’Eternel, qui lui paie le prix de ses actes.
Flee out of the middes of Babel, and deliuer euery man his soule: be not destroyed in her iniquitie: for this is the time of the Lordes vengeance he will render vnto her a recompence.
7 Babel était entre les mains du Seigneur une coupe d’or, destinée à donner l’ivresse à toute la terre; les nations buvaient de son vin et pour cela entraient en délire.
Babel hath bene as a golden cuppe in the Lordes hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations haue drunken of her wine, therefore do the nations rage.
8 Soudain Babel est tombée, et elle s’est brisée. Pleurez sur elle, cherchez du baume pour ses maux, peut-être guérira-t-elle.
Babel is suddenly fallen, and destroyed: howle for her, bring balme for her sore, if she may be healed.
9 Nous avons voulu guérir Babel, mais elle est inguérissable. Abandonnez-la! Que chacun de nous retourne en son pays, puisque son châtiment atteint jusqu’au ciel et s’élève jusqu’à la voûte du firmament!
We would haue cured Babel, but she could not be healed: forsake her, and let vs go euery one into his owne countrey: for her iudgement is come vp vnto heauen, and is lifted vp to ye cloudes.
10 Le Seigneur a fait éclater notre droit: Allons raconter dans Sion l’oeuvre de l’Eternel, notre Dieu.
The Lord hath brought forth our righteousnesse: come and let vs declare in Zion the worke of the Lord our God.
11 Fourbissez les flèches, emplissez les carquois! Le Seigneur a stimulé le courage des rois de Médie, car sa pensée est dirigée contre Babel, dont il veut la destruction: ce sont les représailles de l’Eternel, la revanche de son sanctuaire.
Make bright the arrowes: gather the shieldes: the Lord hath raised vp the spirit of the King of the Medes: for his purpose is against Babel to destroy it, because it is the vengeance of the Lord, and the vengeance of his Temple.
12 Arborez une bannière près des remparts de Babel, renforcez le poste d’observation, placez des sentinelles, disposez des embuscades, car l’Eternel, il a conçu un dessein et il va exécuter ce qu’il a annoncé contre les habitants de Babel.
Set vp the standart vpon the walles of Babel, make the watch strong: set vp the watchmen: prepare the skoutes: for the Lord hath both deuised, and done that which he spake against the inhabitantes of Babel.
13 O toi, qui es assise le long des eaux abondantes, si riche en trésors, ta fin est venue, la mesure de tes rapines est comble.
O thou that dwellest vpon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine ende is come, euen the ende of thy couetousnes.
14 L’Eternel-Cebaot l’a juré par lui-même: Certes, je t’inonderai d’hommes nombreux comme les sauterelles, et ils pousseront contre toi le cri de victoire."
The Lord of hostes hath sworne by him selfe, saying, Surely I will fill thee with men, as with caterpillers, and they shall cry and shoute against thee.
15 Il a créé la terre par sa puissance, affermi le monde par sa sagesse, déployé les cieux par son intelligence.
He hath made the earth by his power, and established the world by his wisedome, and hath stretched out the heauen by his discretion.
16 Lorsqu’il fait entendre le bruit du tonnerre, des torrents d’eau s’amassent au ciel; il élève les nuées du bout de la terre, il accompagne d’éclairs la pluie et fait s’échapper le vent de ses réservoirs.
Hee giueth by his voyce the multitude of waters in the heauen, and he causeth the cloudes to ascend from the endes of the earth: he turneth lightnings to raine, and bringeth forth the winde out of his treasures.
17 Tout être humain est éperdu, incapable de comprendre; tout orfèvre a honte de son idole, car sa statue de fonte est un mensonge, nul souffle de vie en tous ces dieux.
Euery man is a beast by his owne knowledge: euery founder is confounded by the grauen image: for his melting is but falsehood, and there is no breath therein.
18 Ce sont des néants, des oeuvres d’aberration; au jour du règlement des comptes, ils périront.
They are vanitie, and the worke of errours: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
19 Tel n’est point Celui qui est le lot de Jacob; c’est le créateur de l’univers, et Israël est la tribu qui lui appartient en propre: Eternel-Cebaot est son nom.
The portion of Iaakob is not like them: for he is the maker of all things, and Israel is the rodde of his inheritance: the Lord of hostes is his Name.
20 Tu étais pour moi une massue, une arme de guerre; avec toi je broyais les nations, avec toi je détruisais les royaumes.
Thou art mine hammer, and weapons of warre: for with thee will I breake the nations, and with thee wil I destroy kingdomes,
21 Avec toi j’écrasais le cheval et son cavalier; avec toi j’écrasais le char et celui qui le montait.
And by thee wil I breake horse and horseman, and by thee will I breake the charet and him that rideth therein.
22 Avec toi j’écrasais hommes et femmes, avec toi j’écrasais vieillards et enfants, avec toi j’écrasais jeune homme et vierge.
By thee also will I breake man and woman, and by thee wil I breake olde and yong, and by thee wil I breake the yong man and the mayde.
23 Avec toi j’écrasais le berger et son troupeau, avec toi j’écrasais le laboureur et son attelage, avec toi j’écrasais satrapes et gouverneurs.
I wil also breake by thee the shepheard and his flocke, and by thee will I breake the husband man and his yoke of oxen, and by thee will I breake the dukes and princes.
24 Mais je rendrai à Babel et à tous les habitants de la Chaldée tout le mal qu’ils ont fait à Sion, je le leur rendrai sous vos yeux, dit le Seigneur.
And I will render vnto Babel, and to all the inhabitants of the Caldeans all their euil, that they haue done in Zion, euen in your sight, sayth the Lord.
25 Voici, c’est à toi que j’en ai, ô montagne de destruction, dit le Seigneur, toi qui as causé la ruine de toute la terre. J’Étendrai ma main contre toi, je te ferai rouler du haut des rochers et te changerai en un mont calciné.
Beholde, I come vnto thee, O destroying mountaine, sayth the Lord, which destroyest all the earth: and I will stretch out mine hand vpon thee, and rolle thee downe from the rockes, and wil make thee a burnt mountaine.
26 On ne tirera de toi ni pierre d’angle ni pierre de fondation; mais tu seras réduite à l’état de ruine éternelle, dit le Seigneur.
They shall not take of thee a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations, but thou shalt be destroyed for euer, sayth the Lord.
27 Dressez un signal dans le pays, faites résonner le clairon parmi les nations; contre elle, convoquez des peuples, rassemblez les royaumes d’Ararat, de Minni et d’Achkenaz, recrutez des officiers, amenez des chevaux comme une volée de sauterelles aux ailes hérissées.
Set vp a standard in the lande: blowe the trumpets among the nations: prepare the nations against her: call vp the kingdomes of Ararat, Minni, and Ashchenaz against her: appoynt the prince against her: cause horses to come vp as the rough caterpillers.
28 Convoquez contre elle des peuples, les rois de Médie, Ses gouverneurs et tous ses chefs, et tout le territoire de sa suzeraineté.
Prepare against her the nations with the Kings of the Medes, the dukes thereof, and the princes thereof, and all the land of his dominion.
29 La terre a frémi et tremblé, car ils s’accomplissent sur Babel, les desseins de l’Eternel, qui veut faire de Babel une solitude inhabitée.
And the land shall tremble and sorow: for the deuise of the Lord shalbe performed against Babel, to make the lande of Babel waste without an inhabitant.
30 Les guerriers de Babel renoncent à combattre, se tiennent cois dans les forts; leur courage s’est évanoui, ils ressemblent à des femmes. On a mis le feu à ses demeures, ses verrous sont brisés.
The strong men of Babel haue ceased to fight: they haue remayned in their holdes: their strength hath fayled, and they were like women: they haue burnt her dwelling places, and her barres are broken.
31 Courrier sur courrier, messager sur messager se précipitent pour annoncer au roi de Babel que sa ville est envahie de toutes parts,
A post shall runne to meete the post, and a messenger to meete the messenger, to shew the King of Babel, that his citie is taken on a side thereof,
32 que les passages sont occupés, que les fascines sont consumées par le feu, et que les gens de guerre sont dans l’épouvante.
And that the passages are stopped, and the reedes burnt with fire, and the me of war troubled.
33 Oui, ainsi parle l’Eternel-Cebaot, Dieu d’Israël: "Babel ressemble à une aire, au temps où elle est piétinée; encore un peu et l’heure de la moisson arrivera pour elle.
For thus sayth the Lord of hosts the God of Israel, the daughter of Babel is like a threshing floore: the time of her threshing is come: yet a litle while, and the time of her haruest shall come.
34 "II m’avait dépouillée dit Sion, il m’avait affolée, Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babel; il m’avait laissée là comme un vase vidé, après m’avoir avalée comme un dragon et s’être bourré le ventre de mes délices; il m’avait pourchassée.
Nebuchad-nezzar the King of Babel hath deuoured me, and destroyed me: he hath made me an emptie vessel: he swallowed mee vp like a dragon, and filled his belly with my delicates, and hath cast me out.
35 Que les violences que j’ai subies dans ma chair soient imputées à Babel! s’écrie l’habitante de Sion; que mon sang retombe sur les gens de Chaldée! s’écrie Jérusalem.
The spoyle of me, and that which was left of me, is brought vnto Babel, shall the inhabitant of Zion say: and my blood vnto the inhabitantes of Caldea, shall Ierusalem say.
36 C’Est pourquoi, ainsi parle le Seigneur, je vais épouser ta querelle et assouvir ta vengeance; je vais dessécher ses eaux et tarir sa source.
Therefore thus sayth the Lord, Beholde, I will maintayne thy cause, and take vengeance for thee, and I will drie vp the sea, and drie vp her springes.
37 Et Babel deviendra un monceau de ruines, un repaire de chacals, un objet de stupeur et de raillerie, un lieu inhabité.
And Babel shall be as heapes, a dwelling place for dragons, an astonishment, and an hissing, without an inhabitant.
38 Ensemble, ils hurleront comme des léopards, ils grinceront comme de jeunes lionceaux.
They shall rore together like lions, and yell as the lyons whelpes.
39 Au plus fort de leur ardeur, je leur présenterai un festin et leur donnerai l’ivresse, pour qu’ils entrent en délire et s’endorment d’un sommeil éternel, pour ne plus se réveiller, dit le Seigneur.
In their heate I will make them feastes, and I wil make them drunken, that they may reioyce, and sleepe a perpetual sleepe, and not wake, sayth the Lord.
40 Je les traînerai à la boucherie comme des brebis, comme des béliers et des boucs.
I wil bring them downe like lambes to the slaughter, and like rams and goates.
41 Ah! comme Sésac est emportée de force! Comme elle est prise, elle, l’ornement de toute la terre! Comme Babel est devenue une solitude parmi les nations!
How is Sheshach taken! and howe is the glory of the whole earth taken! how is Babel become an astonishment among the nations!
42 La mer s’est élancée sur Babel, de la masse de ses flots elle est recouverte.
The sea is come vp vpon Babel: he is couered with the multitude of the waues thereof.
43 Ses villes se sont changées en solitude, en une région aride et déserte, où nul homme ne s’établira, que ne traversera nul mortel.
Her cities are desolate: the land is dry and a wildernes, a land wherein no man dwelleth, neither doth the sonne of man passe thereby.
44 Je sévirai sur Bel à Babel, je lui arracherai de la bouche le morceau déjà avalé. Les nations n’y afflueront plus et les murs même. de Babel vont s’écrouler.
I wil also visite Bel in Babel, and I wil bring out of his mouth, that which he hath swallowed vp, and the nations shall runne no more vnto him, and the wall of Babel shall fall.
45 Partez de là, mon peuple; que chacun sauve sa vie devant l’ardente colère de l’Eternel!
My people, go out of the middes of her, and deliuer yee euery man his soule from the fierce wrath of the Lord,
46 Que votre coeur ne défaille pas! Ne vous effrayez pas des bruits qui se répandent sur la terre cette année, c’est un bruit, l’année prochaine, ce sera un autre bruit. La violence règne sur la terre, potentats contre potentats.
Least your heart euen faynt, and ye feare the rumour, that shalbe heard in the land: the rumour shall come this yeere, and after that in the other yeere shall come a rumour, and crueltie in the land, and ruler against ruler.
47 Oui, des jours vont venir, où je sévirai contre les idoles de Babel, et tout ce pays sera dans la confusion, et tous ses morts seront couchés sur son sol.
Therefore beholde, the dayes come, that I will visite the images of Babel, and the whole land shalbe confounded, and all her slayne shall fall in the middes of her.
48 Ciel et terre, et tout ce qu’ils renferment, célèbreront la chute de Babel, car c’est du Nord que l’assailleront les dévastateurs, dit l’Eternel.
Then the heauen and the earth, and all that is therein, shall reioyce for Babel: for the destroyers shall come vnto her from the North, saith the Lord.
49 II faut que Babel tombe à son tour, ô victimes d’Israël! puisqu’aussi bien à cause de. Babel sont tombées les victimes de toute la terre.
As Babel caused the slaine of Israel to fal, so by Babel the slaine of all the earth did fall.
50 Vous qui avez échappé au glaive, partez, ne vous arrêtez point! Songez de loin à l’Eternel; que Jérusalem soit présente à votre pensée!
Ye that haue escaped the sworde, goe away, stand not still: remember the Lord a farre of, and let Ierusalem come into your minde.
51 "Nous rougissions des outrages que nous étions obligés d’entendre, la honte couvrait notre visage, puisque des étrangers ont envahi les sanctuaires de la maison du Seigneur."
Wee are confounded because wee haue heard reproch: shame hath couered our faces, for straungers are come into the Sanctuaries of the Lordes House.
52 Aussi des jours viendront, dit l’Eternel, où je sévirai sur ses idoles, et où, sur tout son territoire, geindront des. hommes blessés à mort.
Wherefore behold, the dayes come, sayth the Lord, that I will visite her grauen images, and through all her land the wounded shall grone.
53 Dût Babel monter jusqu’au ciel, ériger dans les hauteurs ses puissantes forteresses, il lui viendrait des dévastateurs suscités par moi, dit l’Eternel.
Though Babel should mount vp to heauen, and though shee should defend her strength on hye, yet from mee shall her destroyers come, sayth the Lord.
54 Des cris retentissants montent de Babel, le fracas d’une grande chute du pays des Chaldéens.
A sound of a cry commeth from Babel, and great destruction from the land of the Caldeans,
55 Car l’Eternel ravage Babel, il y fait taire cette vaste rumeur qui s’élève lorsque mugissent ses vagues comme des eaux profondes, lorsque se répandent les éclats de sa voix.
Because the Lord hath layde Babel waste and destroyed from her the great voyce, and her waues shall roare like great waters, and a sounde was made by their noyse:
56 Oui, le dévastateur se jette sur cette ville, sur Babel, ses guerriers sont pris, leurs arcs sont brisés, car l’Eternel est un Dieu de représailles, il paie sans faute.
Because the destroyer is come vpon her, euen vpon Babel, and her strong men are taken, their bowes are broken: for the Lord God that recompenceth, shall surely recompence.
57 Je verserai l’ivresse à ses princes et à ses sages, à ses gouverneurs, à ses officiers et à ses guerriers: ils s’endormiront d’un sommeil éternel, pour ne plus se réveiller, dit le Roi, dont le nom est Eternel-Cebaot.
And I will make drunke her princes, and her wise men, her dukes, and her nobles, and her strong men: and they shall sleepe a perpetuall sleepe, and not wake, sayth the King, whose Name is the Lord of hostes.
58 Ainsi parle l’Eternel-Cebaot: "Les murs de la grande Babel s’écrouleront de fond en comble, ses portes, si hautes, deviendront la proie des flammes. Voilà comme les peuples travaillent pour le néant et les nations s’exténuent au profit du feu!"
Thus saith the Lord of hostes, The thicke wall of Babel shalbe broken, and her hie gates shall be burnt with fire, and the people shall labour in vaine, and the folke in ye fire, for they shalbe weary.
59 Recommandation que fit le prophète Jérémie à Seraïa, fils de Nêria, fils de Mahséia, lorsqu’il se rendit à Babylone sur l’ordre de Sédécias, roi de Juda, dans la quatrième année de son règne; Seraïa était commandant des étapes.
The worde which Ieremiah the Prophet commanded Sheraiah the sonne of Neriiah, the sonne of Maaseiah, when he went with Zedekiah the King of Iudah into Babel, in the fourth yeere of his reigne: and this Sheraiah was a peaceable prince.
60 Jérémie avait consigné dans un livre toutes les calamités qui devaient atteindre Babylone, tous ces discours qui avaient été rédigés au sujet de cette ville.
So Ieremiah wrote in a booke all the euill that should come vpon Babel: euen al these things, that are written against Babel.
61 Jérémie dit donc à Seraïa: "Quand tu arriveras à Babylone, tu auras soin de donner lecture de tous ces discours.
And Ieremiah sayd to Sheraiah, Whe thou commest vnto Babel, and shalt see, and shalt reade all these wordes,
62 Ensuite tu diras: "Eternel! C’Est toi qui as décrété contre cette ville sa complète destruction, au point que nul n’y habitera plus, ni hommes, ni bêtes, et qu’elle se trouvera réduite à l’état de ruine éternelle!"
Then shalt thou say, O Lord, thou hast spoken against this place, to destroy it, that none should remaine in it, neither man nor beast, but that it should be desolate for euer.
63 Et lorsque tu auras fini de donner lecture de ce livre, tu y attacheras une pierre et tu le lanceras en plein Euphrate,
And when thou hast made an ende of reading this booke, thou shalt binde a stone to it, and cast it in the middes of Euphrates,
64 tout en disant ces mots: "Ainsi s’effondrera Babel, pour ne plus se relever, par l’effet de la calamité que je fais fondre sur elle: ils périront d’épuisement!" Ici se terminent les discours de Jérémie.
And shalt say, Thus shall Babel be drowned, and shall not rise from the euil, that I will bring vpon her: and they shall be weary. Thus farre are the wordes of Ieremiah.
