Jérémie 49
1 Aux fils d’Ammon. Ainsi parle l’Eternel: "Israël n’a-t-il point d’enfants? Est-il sans aucun héritier? Pourquoi Malcom a-t-il pris possession de Gad, et son peuple en a-t-il occupé les villes?
Unto the children of Ammon thus saith the Lord, Hath Israel no sonnes? or hath he none heire? Why then hath their king possessed God? and his people dwelt in his cities?
2 Assurément des jours vont venir, dit le Seigneur, où je ferai entendre à Rabba, capitale des fils d’Ammon, la sonnerie du combat: elle sera réduite à l’état de ruine lamentable, ses bourgades deviendront la proie des flammes, et Israël dépossédera ceux qui l’ont dépossédé, dit l’Eternel.
Therefore beholde the dayes come, sayeth the Lord, that I will cause a noyse of warre to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites, and it shall be a desolate heape, and her daughters shall be burnt with fire: then shall Israel possesse those that possessed him, sayeth the Lord.
3 Lamente-toi, ô Hesbon! car Aï a été dévastée; poussez des cris, filles de Rabba! Ceignez-vous de cilices, organisez un deuil et répandez-vous dans les parcs à troupeaux, car Malcom s’en va en exil, lui, ses prêtres et ses dignitaires tous ensemble.
Howle, O Heshbon, for Ai is wasted: crie ye daughters of Rabbah: girde you with sackecloth: mourne and runne to and from by the hedges: for their King shall goe into captiuitie; and his Priestes, and his princes likewise.
4 Qu’as-tu à faire parade de tes vallées, de ta campagne qui déborde d’abondance, ô fille présomptueuse qui, pleine de confiance dans tes trésors, dis: "Qui osera m’attaquer?"
Wherefore gloriest thou in the valleis? thy valley floweth away, O rebellious daughter: she trusted in her treasures, saying, Who shall come vnto me?
5 Eh bien! moi, dit l’Eternel, Dieu-Cebaot; je susciterai de toutes parts la terreur contre toi, et vous serez chassés, chacun droit devant lui, sans que personne rallie les fuyards.
Beholde, I will bring a feare vpon thee, sayth the Lord God of hostes, of all those that be about thee, and ye shalbe scattered euery man right foorth, and none shall gather him that fleeth.
6 Mais plus tard, je ramènerai les captifs des enfants d’Ammon, dit le Seigneur.
And afterward I will bring againe the captiuitie of the children of Ammon.
7 A Edom. Ainsi parle l’Eternel-Cebaot: "N’Y a-t-il plus de sagesse à Têmân? l’entendement a-t-il péri chez les gens avisés? leur esprit s’est-il évanoui?
To Edom thus sayeth the Lord of hostes: Is wisdome no more in Teman? is counsel perished from their children? is their wisdome vanished?
8 Fuyez, cédez la place, enfermez-vous dans des retraites profondes, ô habitants de Dedân; car je fais fondre sur Esaü la catastrophe qui le menace, c’est le temps où je lui demande des comptes.
Flee, ye inhabitants of Dedan (they are turned backe, and haue consulted to dwell) for I haue brought the destruction of Esau vpon him, and the time of his visitation.
9 Si ce sont des vendangeurs qui viennent contre toi, ils ne laisseront pas de quoi grappiller; si ce sont des voleurs pendant la nuit, ils détruiront tout ce qu’ils pourront.
If the grape gatherers come to thee, would they not leaue some grapes? if theeues come by night, they will destroy till they haue ynough.
10 Mais c’est moi qui mets à nu Esaü, je découvre ses mystérieuses retraites, il ne peut plus se cacher: ruinés sont ses enfants, ses frères, ses voisins, c’en est fait de lui.
For I haue discouered Esau: I haue vncouered his secrets, and he shall not be able to hide himselfe: his seede is wasted, and his brethren and his neighbours, and there shall be none to say,
11 Laisse là tes orphelins, moi je pourvoirai à leur subsistance; que tes veuves se confient à moi!"
Leaue thy fathers children, and I will preserue them aliue, and let thy widowes trust in me.
12 Oui, ainsi parle le Seigneur: "Voici, ceux qui ne devaient point boire la coupe, ils ont été forcés de la boire, et justement toi, tu en serais dispensé! Non, tu n’en seras pas dispensé, tu seras forcé de boire.
For thus sayth the Lord, Beholde, they whose iudgement was not to drinke of the cuppe, haue assuredly drunken, and art thou he that shall escape free? thou shalt not goe free, but thou shalt surely drinke of it.
13 Car, j’en jure par moi-même, dit l’Eternel, oui, Boçra deviendra une solitude, un opprobre, un désert et un objet d’exécration, et toutes ses bourgades seront des ruines éternelles.
For I haue sworne by my selfe, sayeth the Lord, that Bozrah shall be waste, and for a reproche, and a desolation, and a curse, and all the cities thereof shall be perpetuall desolations.
14 J’Ai entendu une annonce de la part de l’Eternel, un messager a été envoyé parmi les nations: "Rassemblez-vous et marchez contre elle, levez-vous pour le combat!"
I haue heard a rumour from the Lord, and an ambassadour is sent vnto the heathen, saying, Gather you together, and come against her, and rise vp to the battell.
15 Car voici, je te fais petit parmi les peuples, méprisable parmi les hommes.
For loe, I will make thee but small among the heathen, and despised among men.
16 Ta présomption, l’infatuation de ton coeur t’a égaré, toi qui habites les pentes des rochers, qui occupes la cime des collines. Quand même tu fixerais ton aire aussi haut que l’aigle, je t’en ferais descendre, dit le Seigneur.
Thy feare, and ye pride of thine heart hath deceiued thee, thou that dwellest in the cleftes of the rocke, and keepest the height of ye hil: though thou shouldest make thy nest as hie as the eagle, I wil bring thee downe from thece, sayth the Lord.
17 Edom deviendra une ruine désolée; quiconque passera près de lui sera frappé de stupeur et ricanera à la vue de toutes ses plaies.
Also Edom shall be desolate: euery one that goeth by it, shall be astonished, and shall hisse at all the plagues thereof,
18 Tel le bouleversement de Sodome, de Gomorrhe et de leurs environs, dit le Seigneur; personne n’y habitera, nul homme n’y séjournera.
As in the ouerthrowe of Sodom, and of Gomorah, and the places thereof neere about, saieth the Lord: no man shall dwell there, neither shall the sonnes of men remaine in it.
19 Voici, tel un lion monte des rives escarpées du Jourdain contre les solides bergeries, en un clin d’oeil je délogerai Edom de là, et j’y établirai comme maître celui que j’aurai choisi; car qui est mon égal? qui m’appellera en justice? quel est le pasteur qui tiendra ferme devant moi?
Beholde, hee shall come vp like a lyon from the swelling of Iorden vnto the strong dwelling place: for I will make Israel to rest, euen I will make him to haste away from her, and who is a chosen man that I may appoynt against her? for who is like mee? and who will appoint me the time? and who is the shepheard that will stande before me?
20 Ecoutez donc le dessein que l’Eternel a formé contre Edom et les projets qu’il a médités contre les habitants de Têmân: Certes les plus humbles gardiens de troupeaux les entraîneront de force; certes on fera s’écrouler sur eux leurs bergeries.
Therefore heare the counsell of the Lord that hee hath deuised against Edom, and his purpose that hee hath conceiued against the inhabitants of Teman: surely the least of the flocke shall drawe them out: surely he shall make their habitations desolate with them.
21 Au bruit de leur chute, la terre frémira; il y aura des cris de douleur, dont l’écho sera perçu sur les bords de la Mer Rouge.
The earth is mooued at the noyse of their fall: the crie of their voice is heard in the red Sea.
22 Voici, tel qu’un aigle il prend son vol, l’ennemi, il plane dans les airs, et déploie ses ailes contre Boçra; en ce jour le coeur des plus braves dans Edom sera comme le coeur d’une femme en mal d’enfant."
Behold, he shall come vp, and flie as the Egle, and spreade his wings ouer Bozrah, and at that day shall the heart of the strong men of Edome be as the heart of a woman in trauaile.
23 A Damas. "Hamath et Arpad sont dans la confusion, car elles ont appris une fâcheuse nouvelle et en sont consternées; leur trouble est celui d’une mer agitée, qui ne peut demeurer en repos.
Vnto Damascus he sayeth, Hamath is confounded and Arpad, for they haue heard euill tidings, and they are faint hearted as one on the fearefull sea that can not rest.
24 Damas a perdu courage, elle s’apprête à prendre la fuite et un tremblement s’empare d’elle; une angoisse et des douleurs l’empoignent comme une femme en travail.
Damascus is discouraged, and turneth her selfe to flight and feare hath seased her: anguish and sorowes haue taken her as a woman in trauaile.
25 Ah! pourquoi n’a-t-elle pas été épargnée, la ville glorieuse, la cité de mes délices?
How is the glorious citie not reserued, the citie of my ioy?
26 Certes, ses jeunes gens succombent sur ses places publiques, et tous les guerriers sont anéantis en ce jour, dit l’Eternel-Cebaot.
Therefore her yong men shall fall in her streetes, and all her men of warre shall be cut off in that day, sayeth the Lord of hostes.
27 Je mettrai le feu aux remparts de Damas, et il dévorera les palais de Ben-Hadad."
And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, which shall cosume the palaces of Benhadad.
28 A Kêdar et aux royaumes de Haçor, que défit Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone. Ainsi parle le Seigneur: "Levez-vous, montez contre Kédar et portez la dévastation chez ces enfants du Levant.
Vnto Kedar, and to the kingdomes of Hazor, which Nebuchad-nezzar, king of Babel shall smite, thus sayeth the Lord, Arise, and goe vp vnto Kedar, and destroy the men of the East.
29 Qu’on enlève leurs tentes et leurs troupeaux, qu’on emporte leurs tapis, tous leurs meubles et leurs chameaux! Qu’on proclame contre eux: "Epouvante tout autour!"
Their tents and their flocks shall they take away: yea, they shall take to themselues their curtaines and all their vessels, and their camels, and they shall crie vnto them, Feare is on euery side.
30 Fuyez, éloignez-vous rapidement, enfermez-vous dans des retraites profondes, habitants de Haçor, dit le Seigneur, car Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, a conçu contre vous des projets et arrêté des résolutions.
Flee, get you farre off (they haue consulted to dwell) O ye inhabitants of Hazor, saith the Lord: for Nebuchad-nezzar King of Babel hath taken counsell against you, and hath deuised a purpose against you.
31 Debout! Marchez contre un peuple paisible, qui demeure en pleine sécurité, dit le Seigneur; il n’a ni portes ni verrous et vit dans l’isolement.
Arise, and get you vp vnto the welthy nation that dwelleth without care, saith the Lord, which haue neither gates nor barres, but dwel alone.
32 Leurs chameaux deviendront une proie et la multitude de leurs troupeaux un butin; je les disperserai à tous les vents, ces gens qui se taillent la barbe, et de tous les côtés je ferai fondre la ruine sur eux.
And their camels shall be a bootie, and the multitude of their cattel a spoile, and I will scatter them into all windes, and to the vtmost corners, and I will bring their destruction from al the sides thereof, sayeth the Lord.
33 Ainsi Haçor deviendra un repaire de chacals, dit le Seigneur, une éternelle solitude, où personne n’habitera, où nul homme ne séjournera."
And Hazor shall be a dwelling for dragons, and desolation for euer: there shall no man dwell there, nor the sonnes of men remaine in it.
34 Voici quelle fut la parole de l’Eternel adressée à Jérémie, le prophète, au sujet d’Elam, au début du règne de Sédécias, roi de Juda; il dit:
The woordes of the Lord that came to Ieremiah the Prophet, concerning Elam, in the beginning of the reigne of Zedekiah King of Iudah, saying,
35 "Ainsi parle l’Eternel-Cebaot: Voici, je vais briser l’arc des Elamites, le meilleur de leur force.
Thus sayeth the Lord of hostes, Beholde, I will breake the bowe of Elam, euen the chiefe of their strength.
36 Je susciterai contre Elam quatre vents des quatre extrémités du ciel, et je les disperserai au gré de ces vents; il n’y a aucune nation qui ne verra arriver chez elle des fugitifs d’Elam.
And vpon Elam I will bring the foure windes from the foure quarters of heauen, and will scatter them towardes all these windes, and there shall bee no nation, whither the fugitiues of Elam shall not come.
37 J’Abattrai les Elamites devant leurs ennemis, devant ceux qui en veulent à leur existence; je ferai fondre sur eux le malheur, le feu de ma colère, dit le Seigneur, et je lâcherai le glaive contre eux, de façon à les anéantir.
For I will cause Elam to be afraied before their enemies, and before them that seeke their liues, and will bring vpon them a plague, euen the indignation of my wrath, saieth the Lord, and I wil sende the sworde after them till I haue consumed them.
38 Puis j’établirai mon trône à Elam, et j’en extirperai rois et princes, dit le Seigneur.
And I wil set my throne in Elam, and I wil destroy both the King and the princes from thence, saith the Lord:
39 Mais il arrivera que dans la suite des temps je ramènerai les captifs d’Elam." dit le Seigneur.
but in the latter daies I wil bring againe the captiuitie of Elam, sayeth the Lord.
