Jérémie 48
1 A Moab. Ainsi parle l’Eternel-Cebaot, Dieu d’Israël: "Malheur à Nebo, car elle est dévastée! Kiriataïm subit la honte d’être prise de force, la citadelle est couverte de confusion: elle est ruinée!
Of Moab. "Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: 'Woe to Nebo, because it is about to be destroyed; Kiriathaim will be put to shame, it will be taken captive. The fortress is put to shame and broken down.
2 Moab ne se fait plus gloire de Hesbon; on en a décidé la ruine: "Allons, rayons-la du rang des peuples!" Toi aussi, Madmén, tu es anéantie, le glaive s’acharne contre toi.
The praise of Moab is no more; in Heshbon they have devised evil against her: "Come, and let us cut her off from being a nation." You also, Madmen, shall be brought to silence: the sword shall pursue you.
3 Des cris stridents viennent de Horonaïm: désastre, catastrophe immense!
The sound of a cry from Horonaim, "destruction and great calamity."
4 Moab est brisé, ses jeunes gens font entendre des lamentations.
Moab is destroyed; her little ones have caused a cry to be heard.
5 La montée de Louhit est gravie avec des sanglots, des sanglots redoublés; sur la pente de Horonaïm, les ennemis perçoivent des cris de désespoir.
For by the ascent of Luhith with continual weeping shall they go up; for at the descent of Horonaim they have heard the distress of the cry of destruction.
6 "Fuyez, sauvez votre vie!" Tout devient comme un arbre stérile dans le désert.
"Flee, save your lives, and be like a shrub in the wilderness."
7 Oui, pour t’être fiée à tes oeuvres et à tes trésors, toi aussi tu seras capturée; Camos s’en ira en exil, avec ses prêtres et ses dignitaires tous ensemble.
For, because you have trusted in your works and in your treasures, you also shall be taken: and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity, his priests and his officials together.
8 Le dévastateur marche contre toute ville, aucune n’échappe à ses coups. La vallée est perdue, et la plaine ruinée, car l’Eternel l’a dit.
The destroyer shall come on every city, and no city shall escape; the valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed; as the LORD has spoken.
9 Donnez des ailes à Moab, pour qu’il prenne son vol! Ses villes sont réduites en solitude, où personne n’habitera plus.
Give wings to Moab, that she may fly and get her away: and her cities shall become a desolation, without any to dwell in them.'
10 Maudit soit quiconque exécute avec mauvaise foi l’ouvrage de l’Eternel! Maudit quiconque s’abstient de tremper son épée dans le sang!
Cursed is he who does the work of the LORD negligently; and cursed is he who keeps back his sword from blood.
11 Dès son jeune âge, Moab vivait dans la quiétude et reposait en paix sur ses lies; il n’a pas été transvasé d’un récipient dans un autre et n’a pas connu le chemin de l’exil. Aussi son goût a-t-il persisté et son parfum ne s’est point altéré
'Moab has been at ease from his youth, and he has settled on his lees, and has not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither has he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remains in him, and his scent is not changed.
12 Mais certes des jours vont venir, dit l’Eternel, où je lui enverrai des tonneliers qui le secoueront, qui videront ses vases et briseront ses amphores.
Therefore look, the days come,' says the LORD, 'that I will send to him those who pour off, and they shall pour him off; and they shall empty his vessels, and break their bottles in pieces.
13 Alors Moab aura honte de Camos, de même que la maison d’Israël a eu honte de Béthel, qui avait eu sa confiance.
Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel their confidence.
14 Comment diriez-vous: "Nous sommes des héros, des hommes vaillants pour le combat?"
How can you say, "We are mighty men, and valiant men for the war?"
15 Moab est dévasté, on escalade ses villes; l’élite de sa jeunesse est livrée au carnage, selon la parole du Roi, qui a nom Eternel-Cebaot.
Moab is laid waste, and they are gone up into his cities, and his chosen young men are gone down to the slaughter,' says the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts.
16 La catastrophe de Moab est près d’arriver, et son malheur s’avance à grands pas.
The calamity of Moab is near to come, and his affliction hurries fast.
17 Plaignez-le, ô vous tous qui êtes ses voisins, vous tous qui connaissez son nom; dites: "Comme elle a été brisée, la verge puissante, le sceptre magnifique!"
All you who are around him, bemoan him, and all you who know his name; say, "How is the strong staff broken, the beautiful rod."
18 Descends du haut de ta gloire pour demeurer dans des lieux arides, ô habitante de Dibôn, car l’ennemi de Moab est monté contre toi et a détruit tes forts.
You daughter who dwells in Dibon, come down from your glory, and sit in thirst; for the destroyer of Moab has come up against you, he has destroyed your strongholds.
19 Place-toi sur la route et observe, habitante d’Aroer; interroge les fuyards, tous ceux qui ont pu se sauver et dis: "Qu’est-il arrivé?"

20 Moab est confus, car il a été brisé. Lamentez-vous, poussez des cris, publiez dans Arnon que Moab est perdu.

21 Le châtiment a frappé le pays de la plaine, Holôn, lahça, Méfaot;

22 Dibôn, Nebo et Beth-Diblataïm;
and on Dibon, and on Nebo, and on Beth Diblathaim,
23 Kiriataïm, Beth-Gamoul et Beth-Meôn;
and on Kiriathaim, and on Beth Gamul, and on Beth Meon,
24 Keriot, Boçra et toutes les villes du pays de Moab, éloignées et proches.
and on Kerioth, and on Bozrah, and on all the cities of the land of Moab, far or near.
25 Elle est abattue, la corne de Moab, son bras est rompu, dit l’Eternel.
The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken,' says the LORD.
26 Rendez-le ivre, car il s’est élevé contre l’Eternel; que Moab se débatte dans ses vomissements et devienne un objet de risée à son tour!
'Make him drunk; for he magnified himself against the LORD: and Moab shall wallow in his vomit, and he also shall be in derision.
27 N’Est-ce pas qu’Israël a été l’objet de ta risée? Avait-il donc été surpris avec des voleurs pour hocher la tête chaque fois que tu parlais de lui?
For wasn't Israel a derision to you? Was he found among thieves? For as often as you speak of him, you shake your head.
28 Désertez les villes, abritez-vous dans les rochers, habitants de Moab! Soyez comme la colombe qui va nicher sur les flancs et au bord des précipices.
You inhabitants of Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock; and be like the dove that makes her nest over the mouth of the abyss.
29 Nous avions entendu parler de l’orgueil de Moab, qui a été si démesuré, de sa hauteur; de son infatuation, de son arrogance, de l’enflure de son coeur.
We have heard of the pride of Moab--he is very proud--of his pride, and his vanity, and his arrogance, and the haughtiness of his heart.
30 Moi, dit l’Eternel, je connais son caractère emporté, ses vantardises sans fondement et ses oeuvres de fausseté.
I know his wrath,' says the LORD, 'that it is nothing; his boastings have worked nothing.
31 C’Est pourquoi je me lamente pour Moab; à cause de Moab tout entier, je pousse des cris, je gémis à cause des gens de Kir-Hérés.
therefore I will wail for Moab; yes, I will cry out for all Moab; I will mourn for the men of Kir Heres.
32 Les pleurs qu’a fait couler Yazer, je les répands sur toi, ô vignoble de Sibma, dont les pampres s’étendaient par delà la mer, atteignant jusqu’aux eaux de Yazer. L’Ennemi s’est jeté sur tes récoltes et tes vendanges.
With more than the weeping of Jazer will I weep for you, vine of Sibmah: your branches passed over the sea, they reached even to Jazer; on your summer fruits and on your vintage the destroyer is fallen.
33 Plus de joie, plus d’allégresse dans les vergers et dans le pays de Moab; j’ai tari le vin dans les cuviers, on ne le presse plus aux cris de Hêdad, c’en est fini des acclamations joyeuses.
Gladness and joy is taken away from the fruitful field and from the land of Moab; and I have caused wine to cease from the wine presses: none shall tread with shouting; the shouting shall be no shouting.
34 Des cris retentissent à Hesbon, l’écho en arrive jusqu’à Elalê, jusqu’à Yahaç; on les entend depuis Çoar jusqu’à Horonaïm, jusqu’à Eglat-Chelichya, car taries sont les eaux de Nimrim.
From the cry of Heshbon even to Elealeh, even to Jahaz have they uttered their voice, from Zoar even to Horonaim, to Eglath Shelishiyah: for the waters of Nimrim also shall become desolate.
35 Je ferai disparaître en Moab quiconque monte aux hauts-lieux, quiconque offre de l’encens à son dieu.
And I will cause to cease in Moab,' says the LORD, 'the one who offers sacrifice upon the high place, and the one who burns incense to his gods.
36 Aussi mon coeur gémit-il au sujet de Moab comme les flûtes funèbres; mon coeur gémit comme les flûtes funèbres sur les gens de Kir-Hérés: aussi bien, c’en est fait de tous les biens qu’ils avaient amassés.
Therefore my heart sounds for Moab like pipes, and my heart sounds like pipes for the men of Kir Heres: therefore the abundance that he has gotten is perished.
37 Oui, toute tête est devenue chauve, toute barbe est arrachée, toutes les mains sont couvertes d’incisions et tous les reins de cilices.
For every head is bald, and every beard clipped: on all the hands are cuttings, and on the waist sackcloth.
38 Sur toutes les terrasses de Moab et sur ses places publiques, ce ne sont que démonstrations de deuil, parce que j’ai brisé Moab comme un vase dont on ne veut plus, dit le Seigneur.
On all the housetops of Moab and in its streets there is lamentation every where; for I have broken Moab like a vessel in which none delights,' says the LORD.
39 On s’écrie avec douleur: "Comme il est frappé! Comme Moab a tourné le dos, à sa honte!" Oui, Moab sera un objet de dérision et d’épouvante pour tous ses voisins.
How it is broken down. How they wail. How Moab has turned the back with shame. So shall Moab become a derision and a terror to all who are around him.'
40 Voici, en effet, ce que dit le Seigneur: Tel qu’un aigle, il plane, l’ennemi, et déploie ses ailes sur Moab.
For thus says the LORD: 'Look, he shall fly as an eagle, and shall spread out his wings against Moab.
41 Les villes sont prises, les forteresses emportées; en ce jour, le coeur des guerriers de Moab sera comme le coeur d’une femme en mal d’enfant.
Kerioth is taken, and the strongholds are seized, and the heart of the mighty men of Moab at that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
42 Moab sera effacé du rang des nations, car il s’est élevé contre l’Eternel.
Moab shall be destroyed from being a people, because he has magnified himself against the LORD.
43 Epouvante, fosse et piège te menacent, habitant de Moab, dit le Seigneur.
Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are on you, inhabitant of Moab, says the LORD.
44 Quiconque s’enfuit sous l’effet de l’épouvante tombe dans la fosse, et, s’il remonte de la fosse, il est pris dans le filet, car j’amènerai contre Moab l’année de son châtiment, dit le Seigneur.
He who flees from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he who gets up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring on him, even on Moab, the year of their visitation,' says the LORD.
45 A bout de forces, les fuyards s’arrêtent à l’ombre de Hesbon; cependant un feu jaillit de Hesbon, une flamme du milieu de Sihon pour dévorer les confins de Moab, le crâne de ces enfants de l’arrogance.
'Those who fled stand without strength under the shadow of Heshbon; for a fire has gone forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the city of Sihon, and it has destroyed the forehead of Moab, and the crown of the sons of tumult.
46 Malheur à toi, Moab! c’est la fin du peuple de Camos; car tes fils ont été emmenés en captivité et tes filles sont prisonnières.
Woe to you, O Moab. The people of Chemosh is undone; for your sons are taken away captive, and your daughters into captivity.
47 Pourtant, à la fin des jours, je ramènerai les captifs de Moab, dit le Seigneur." Ici s’arrête la sentence prononcée contre Moab.
Yet will I bring back the captivity of Moab in the latter days,' says the LORD. Thus far is the judgment of Moab."
