Jérémie 47
1 Telle est la communication que fit l’Eternel au prophète Jérémie concernant les Philistins, avant la défaite infligée par Pharaon à Gaza:
The word of Jehovah which came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh had smitten Gaza.
2 "Ainsi parle l’Eternel: Voici que des flots s’avancent du Nord et deviennent un torrent impétueux, submergeant la terre et ce qu’elle renferme, les villes et ceux qui y demeurent. Les hommes poussent des cris et tous les habitants du pays se lamentent.
Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, waters rise up out of the North, And they shall become an overflowing torrent, And shall overflow the land, and all that is therein, —The city, and them that dwell therein; And the men shall cry aloud, And all the inhabitants of the land shall wail.
3 Au trot bruyant des sabots des fiers coursiers, au roulement des chars, au fracas de leurs roues, les pères n’ont plus de regard pour leurs enfants, tant ils sont abattus,
At the noise of the stamping of the horses, At the rattling of his chariots, And at the rumbling of his wheels, Fathers look not back for their children, For feebleness of hands,
4 à cause de l’arrivée de ce jour qui verra ruiner tous les Philistins, enlever à Tyr et à Sidon leurs derniers auxiliaires, car l’Eternel veut perdre les Philistins, ces émigrés de l’île de Caphtor.
Because of the day which cometh, To lay waste all the Philistines, To cut off from Tyre and from Sidon Every helper that remaineth. For Jehovah will lay waste the Philistines, The remnant of the country of Caphtor.
5 Gaza est atteinte de calvitie, Ascalon est anéantie avec le reste de leur plaine jusqu’à quand te feras-tu des incisions?
Baldness is come upon Gaza, Askelon is in ruins, And the remnant of their valley! How long wilt thou cut thyself?
6 Holà! Glaive du Seigneur, quand donc te reposeras-tu enfin? Rentre dans ton fourreau, apaise-toi, fais trève!
Ah! sword of Jehovah, How long ere thou wilt be quiet? Retire into thy scabbard, Rest, and be still!
7 Mais comment se tiendrait-il coi, alors que l’Eternel lui a donné des ordres? A Ascalon et sur les bords de la mer, il lui a assigné un rendez-vous."
But how canst thou be at rest, Since Jehovah hath given thee a charge against Askelon, And against the coast of the sea? There hath he appointed it.
