Jérémie 44

1 Communication faite à Jérémie concernant tous les Judéens établis dans le pays d’Egypte établis à Migdol, Tahpanhès, Nof et dans le district de Patros à savoir:

The word which came to Jeremiah, against all the Jews who were dwelling in the land of Egypt, —who were dwelling in Migdol and in Tahpanhes, and in Noph, and in the land of Pathros saying:

2 "Ainsi parle l’Eternel-Cebaot, Dieu d’Israël: Vous avez vu tous les désastres que j’ai infligés à Jérusalem et à toutes les villes de Juda; les voilà réduites aujourd’hui en ruines, personne n’y habite,

Thus, saith Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel, Ye yourselves, saw all the calamity which I brought in upon Jerusalem, and upon all the cities of Judah, —and there they are, a desolation this day, and there is not in them an inhabitant:

3 en punition du mal qu’elles ont fait pour me contrarier, en allant encenser, adorer des divinités étrangères que ni elles, ni vous, ni vos ancêtres n’aviez connues.

because of their wickedness which they committed, provoking me to anger, by going to burn incense, to serve other gods, whom they had not known, they, ye nor your fathers;

4 Je vous envoyais tous mes serviteurs, les prophètes, sans trêve ni relâche, pour vous dire: Ne commettez donc pas cette chose abominable que je déteste!

yet I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, betimes sending them, saying, Do not, I pray you, commit this abominable thing, which I hate!

5 Mais ils n’écoutèrent point, ne prêtèrent point l’oreille pour abandonner leur perversité et cesser d’encenser des divinités étrangères.

but they hearkened not neither inclined their ear, by turning from their wickedness, —so as not to burn incense to other gods.

6 Aussi ma colère et mon indignation se sont déversées et ont consumé les villes de Juda et les rues de Jérusalem, qui sont devenues une ruine et une solitude comme cela se voit aujourd’hui.

Therefore were mine indignation and mine anger poured out, and a fire was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, —and they became waste and desolate, as at this day.

7 Et maintenant, dit l’Eternel, Dieu-Cebaot, Dieu d’Israël: Pourquoi vous attirer à vous-mêmes de grands maux et faire disparaître du sein de Juda hommes, femmes, enfants et nourrissons, sans même vous conserver un simple reste,

Now, therefore, Thus, saith Yahweh God of hosts God of Israel—Wherefore, are ye committing a great wickedness against your own lives, that ye should cut off from you man and woman child and suckling, out of the midst of Judah, —so that there should not be left you a remnant:

8 en m’irritant par l’oeuvre de vos mains, en offrant de l’encens aux dieux étrangers en ce pays d’Egypte, où vous venez séjourner, ce qui aura pour effet d’amener votre ruine et de vous rendre un objet de malédiction et d’opprobre parmi tous les peuples de la terre?

in that ye provoke me to anger by the works of your own hands, burning incense to other gods, in the land of Egypt, which ye have been entering to sojourn, —that ye should cut them off from you, and that ye should become a contempt and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?

9 Avez-vous donc oublié les méfaits de vos pères, les méfaits des rois de Juda, ceux de leurs femmes, vos propres méfaits et ceux de vos femmes, qui ont été commis dans le pays de Juda et les rues de Jérusalem?

Have ye forgotten the wicked ways of your fathers and the wicked ways of the kings of Judah, and the wicked ways of his wives, and your own wicked ways, and the wicked ways of your own wives, —which they committed in the land of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem?

10 On n’est pas encore contrit ni apeuré! Et on ne suit pas ma loi et mes ordonnances que je vous avais exposées à vous et à vos ancêtres!

They have not been crushed, unto this day; neither have they been afraid, neither have they walked in my law, and in my statutes, which I set before you and before your fathers,

11 C’Est pourquoi, ainsi parle l’Eternel-Cebaot, Dieu d’Israël, je vais tourner ma face contre vous pour votre malheur et pour la destruction totale de Juda.

Therefore, Thus, saith Yahweh of hosts God of Israel, Behold me! setting my face against you for calamity, —even to cut off all Judah;

12 Je prendrai les survivants de Juda qui se sont obstinés à se rendre en Egypte pour y séjourner, et c’en sera fini d’eux: ils tomberont dans le pays d’Egypte, victimes du glaive et de la famine; grands et petits, ils mourront par le glaive et la famine et deviendront un objet d’exécration, de stupeur, de malédiction et d’opprobre.

and I will take the remnant of Judah who did set their faces to enter the land of Egypt to sojourn there, and they shall all be consumed, in the land of Egypt, shall they fall by the sword, by famine, shall they be consumed, from the least even unto the greatest, by sword and by famine, shall they die, —so shall they become a curse, and an astonishment, and a contempt and a reproach;

13 Et je sévirai contre ceux qui sont fixés en Egypte comme j’ai sévi contre Jérusalem, par le glaive, par la famine et par la peste.

and I will bring punishment upon them who are dwelling in the land of Egypt, just as I brought punishment upon Jerusalem, —by sword, by famine and by pestilence;

14 Personne n’échappera et ne sera sauvé des survivants de Juda, venus pour séjourner là, en Egypte. Quant à retourner au pays de Juda, où certains d’entre eux auraient à coeur de revenir pour s’y fixer, non, il n’y aura que quelques hommes isolés qui reviendront."

and there shall be neither escape nor survival, unto the remnant of Judah who have been entering, to sojourn there into the land of Egypt, —that they should return to the land of Judah even when they are lifting up their soul to return to dwell there, for none shall return, saving fugitives.

15 Mais voici ce que répondirent à Jérémie tous ces hommes qui savaient que leurs épouses encensaient des dieux étrangers, toutes les femmes qui étaient présentes en grande foule, ainsi que la population entière établie dans le pays d’Egypte, à Patros:

Then all the men who knew that their wives were burning incense to other gods, and all the women standing by, a great convocation, —with all the people who were dwelling in the land of Egypt in Pathros, made answer unto Jeremiah, saying:

16 "La communication que tu nous fais au nom de l’Eternel, nous ne l’accueillons pas de ta part.

As touching the word which thou hast spoken unto us, in the name of Yahweh we are not going to hearken unto thee;

17 Mais, au contraire, nous sommes résolus à faire tout ce que nos lèvres ont proféré: brûler de l’encens à la Reine des cieux, répandre des libations en son honneur, comme nous l’avons fait, nous et nos pères, nos rois et nos princes, dans les villes de Juda et les rues de Jérusalem; car alors nous mangions du pain à satiété, nous vivions heureux et ne connaissions pas les revers.

but, we will certainly do, the whole thing that hath gone forth out of our own mouth, by burning incense to the queen of the heavens, and pouring out to her drink-offerings, just as we and our fathers, and our kings and our princes, did, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, then were we filled with bread and became prosperous, and calamity, saw we none;

18 Mais du jour où nous avons cessé de brûler de l’encens à la Reine des cieux et de lui offrir des libations, nous avons manqué de tout, et nous avons été décimés par le glaive et par la famine.

whereas, from the very time we ceased burning incense to the queen of the heavens and pouring out to her drink-offerings, we have lacked everything, —and by sword and by famine, have we been consumed.

19 Et lorsque nous brûlons de l’encens à la Reine des cieux et répandons des libations en son honneur, est-ce donc à l’insu de nos époux que nous lui confectionnons des gâteaux pour la traiter en divinité et que nous lui faisons des libations?"

And, though we are burning incense to the queen of the heavens and pouring out to her drink-offerings, is it, without our men that we have made to her sacrificial cakes as images of her and poured out to her, drink-offerings?

20 Jérémie répliqua au peuple réuni; aux hommes, aux femmes, à toute cette foule qui lui avait tenu tête:

Then spake Jeremiah unto all the people, —against the men and against the women, and against all the people who had been making any answer unto him, saying:

21 "Précisément, dit-il, cet acte que vous avez commis de brûler de l’encens dans les villes de Juda et les rues de Jérusalem, vous et vos pères, vos rois et vos princes, ainsi que les gens du peuple, l’Eternel s’en est souvenu et il l’a pris à coeur.

Was it not, the very incense which ye burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, ye and your fathers your kings and your princes and the people of the land, was it not those very things, that Yahweh did remember, and that came up on his heart;

22 Aussi l’Eternel n’a-t-il pu patienter davantage à la vue de la perversité de vos oeuvres et des abominations que vous vous permettiez, et votre pays est devenu une ruine, une solitude, un lieu maudit, que personne n’habite, comme on le voit aujourd’hui.

so that Yahweh could no longer forbear because of the wickedness of your doings, because of the abominations which ye committed, —and your land became a desolation, and an astonishment, and a contempt without inhabitant—as at this day?

23 C’Est parce que vous avez offert de l’encens, manqué gravement à l’Eternel, refusant d’écouter sa voix et de suivre sa doctrine, ses statuts et ses avertissements, que cette calamité dont vous êtes témoins aujourd’hui vous a atteints."

Because that ye burned incense, and that ye sinned against Yahweh and hearkened not unto the voice of Yahweh, and, in his law and in his statutes and in his testimonies, did not walk, for this cause, did this calamity befall you—as at this day.

24 Jérémie dit encore à tout le peuple ainsi qu’à toutes les femmes: "Ecoutez la parole de l’Eternel, vous tous, Judéens, qui êtes dans le pays d’Egypte:

And Jeremiah said unto all the people, and unto all the women, —Hear ye the word of Yahweh, all Judah, who are in the land of Egypt, —

25 Ainsi parle l’Eternel-Cebaot, Dieu d’Israël: Vous dites, vous et vos femmes votre bouche parle et vos mains agissentvous dites: Nous voulons accomplir les voeux que nous avons formulés, brûler de l’encens à la Reine des cieux et lui faire des libations; vous entendez remplir vos engagements et accomplir ponctuellement vos voeux.

Thus, saith Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel, saying, Ye and your wives, have both spoken with your mouth and with your hands, have ye fulfilled saying, We will, certainly perform, our vows which we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of the heavens, and to pour out to her drink-offerings: the women will certainly confirm, your vows, and, certainly perform, your vows.

26 Eh bien! Ecoutez la parole de l’Eternel, vous tous, judéens, qui demeurez dans le pays d’Egypte: Voici, j’en jure par mon grand nom, dit l’Eternel, mon nom ne sera plus prononcé par la bouche d’aucun des hommes dé Juda; nul ne dira dans tout le pays d’Egypte: aussi vrai qu’existe le Dieu Eternel!

Therefore, hear ye the word of Yahweh, all Judah, who are dwelling in the land of Egypt, —Behold me! I have sworn by my great Name, Saith Yahweh, That my Name shall no more be invoked by the mouth of any man of Judah saying—By the life of My Lord, Yahweh in all the land of Egypt.

27 Je vais agir rapidement à leur égard, pour leur malheur et non pour leur bien: tous les hommes de Juda qui se trouvent dans le pays d’Egypte périront jusqu’au dernier par le glaive et par! a famine.

Behold me! watching over them for calamity, and not for blessing, —so shall all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt, be consumed, by sword and by famine until there be an end of them.

28 Quelques-uns seulement, échappés au glaive, retourneront du pays d’Egypte au pays de Juda, ce sera un tout petit nombre; et tous les survivants de Juda, venus pour séjourner en Egypte, sauront quelle est la parole qui triomphe, si c’est la mienne ou la leur.

Yet, the fugitives of the sword, shall certainly return out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah men easily counted, —that all the remnant of Judah who are entering Egypt to sojourn there, may know, whose word, shall stand, mine or theirs!

29 Et voici pour vous le signe, dit l’Eternel, prouvant que je sévirai contre vous en ces lieux, afin que vous sachiez que mes paroles s’accompliront infailliblement contre vous, pour votre malheur.

And, this, to you, shall be the sign, Declareth Yahweh, that I am about to bring punishment upon you in this place, —that ye may know that my words shall, certainly stand against you, for calamity:

30 Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel: Je vais livrer Pharaon Hofra, roi d’Egypte, au pouvoir de ses ennemis et de ceux qui en veulent à sa vie, de même que j’ai livré Sédécias, roi de Juda, au pouvoir de Nabuchodonosor, qui était son ennemi et en voulait à sa vie."

Thus, saith Yahweh, Behold me! delivering up Pharaoh-hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies, yea into the hand of them who are seeking his life, —just as I delivered Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon his enemy, and one seeking his life.
