Jérémie 3
1 Dis-leur: "S’Il arrive qu’un homme répudie sa femme, et que celle-ci, après l’avoir quitté, devienne l’épouse d’un autre, se peut-il qu’il la reprenne de nouveau? Un tel pays n’en serait-il pas tout à fait déshonoré? Or, toi, tu t’es prostituée à de nombreux amants et tu reviendrais à moi! dit l’Eternel.
They say, If a man put away his wife, and she goe from him, and become another mans, shall hee returne againe vnto her? shall not this land be polluted? but thou hast played the harlot with many louers: yet turne againe to mee, sayeth the Lord.
2 Lève les yeux vers les collines et regarde: où ne t’es-tu pas abandonnée? Pour eux, tu te postais sur les routes comme fait le Bédouin dans le désert, et ainsi tu as souillé le pays par tes débauches et ton inconduite.
Lift vp thine eyes vnto the hie places, and beholde, where thou hast not plaied the harlot: thou hast sit waiting for them in the waies, as the Arabian in the wildernesse: and thou hast polluted the lande with thy whoredomes, and with thy malice.
3 Dussent les ondées bienfaisantes te manquer, les pluies tardives faire défaut, tu avais le front d’une courtisane, tu refusais de rougir!
Therefore the showres haue beene restrained, and the latter raine came not, and thou haddest a whores forehead: thou wouldest not bee ashamed.
4 Sans doute, à l’heure présente, tu t’écries en t’adressant à moi: "O mon père, tu es le guide de ma jeunesse;
Diddest thou not stil crie vnto me, Thou art my father, and the guide of my youth?
5 me gardera-t-il éternellement rancune? Conservera-t-il toujours son ressentiment?" Voilà comme tu parles, et tu commets les pires fautes, et triomphes dans le mal!"
Wil he keepe his anger for euer? will he reserue it to the ende? thus hast thou spoken, but thou doest euill, euen more and more.
6 L’Eternel me dit au temps du roi Josias: "As-tu vu ce que faisait Israël, la nation renégate? Elle allait sur toute montagne élevée, sous tout bois verdoyant, et s’y livrait à la prostitution.
The Lord saide also vnto me, in the daies of Iosiah the King, Hast thou seene what this rebell Israel hath done? for she hath gone vp vpon euery high mountaine, and vnder euery greene tree, and there plaied the harlot.
7 Je me disais: Plus tard, après avoir commis tous ces excès, c’est à moi qu’elle reviendra… Elle n’est pas revenue! Et sa perfide soeur, la nation de Juda, en a été témoin.
And I sayde, when shee had done all this, Turne thou vnto me: but she returned not, as her rebellious sister Iudah sawe.
8 Elle a vu que c’est bien à cause de son adultère que je l’avais répudiée, la nation renégate, Israël, et que je lui avais remis l’acte de divorce; mais sa soeur perfide, la nation de Juda, n’a pas pris peur; à son tour, elle alla se prostituer.
When I sawe, howe that by all occasions rebellious Israel had plaied the harlot, I cast her away, and gaue her a bill of diuorcement: yet her rebellious sister Iudah was not afraied, but shee went also, and plaied the harlot.
9 Ses scandaleux dérèglements déshonorèrent le pays, elle trahit sa foi avec des idoles de pierre et de bois.
So that for the lightnesse of her whoredome shee hath euen defiled the lande: for shee hath committed fornication with stones and stockes.
10 Et malgré tout, sa perfide soeur, la nation de Juda, n’est pas revenue à moi de tout son coeur, mais de façon hypocrite," dit l’Eternel.
Neuerthelesse for all this, her rebellious sister Iudah hath not returned vnto mee with her whole heart, but fainedly, sayth the Lord.
11 L’Eternel me dit encore: "La nation renégate d’Israël peut se prétendre innocente en comparaison de Juda, la nation perfide.
And the Lord said vnto me, The rebellious Israel hath iustified her selfe more then the rebellious Iudah.
12 Tu iras donc proclamer les paroles suivantes du côté du Nord, tu diras: Reviens, renégate, ô Israël! dit l’Eternel. Je ne ferai plus tomber mon courroux sur vous, car je suis clément, dit l’Eternel, mon ressentiment n’est pas durable.
Goe and crie these woordes towarde the North and say, Thou disobedient Israel, returne, sayeth the Lord, and I will not let my wrath fall vpon you: for I am mercifull, sayeth the Lord, and I will not alway keepe mine anger.
13 Seulement, reconnais ta faute, que tu as péché contre l’Eternel, ton Dieu, que tu étais prodigue de démarches auprès des étrangers, sous tous les arbres verdoyants, et que tu n’écoutais pas ma voix", dit l’Eternel.
But knowe thine iniquitie: for thou hast rebelled against the Lord thy God, and hast scattered thy waies to the straunge gods vnder euery greene tree, but yee woulde not obey my voyce, sayeth the Lord.
14 Revenez, enfants rebelles, dit l’Eternel, car je veux, moi, contracter une union avec vous. Je vous prendrai un par ville; deux par famille, et je vous amènerai à Sion.
O yee disobedient children, turne againe, sayeth the Lord, for I am your Lord, and I will take you one of a citie, and two of a tribe and wil bring you to Zion,
15 Je vous donnerai des pasteurs selon mon coeur, qui vous conduiront avec sagesse et discernement.
And I will giue you pastours according to mine heart, which shall feede you with knowledge and vnderstanding.
16 Alors, quand vous serez devenus, à cette époque, nombreux et prospères dans le pays, déclare l’Eternel, on ne dira plus: Arche de l’Alliance du Seigneur! La pensée n’en reviendra plus à l’esprit, on n’en rappellera plus le souvenir ni on n’en remarquera l’absence: on n’en fera plus d’autre.
Moreouer, when yee be increased and multiplied in the land, in those daies, saieth the Lord, they shall say no more, The Arke of the couenant of the Lord: for it shall come no more to minde, neither shall they remember it, neither shall they visite it, for that shalbe no more done.
17 En ces temps on appellera Jérusalem: "Trône de l’Eternel. Tous les peuples s’assembleront là, à Jérusalem, en l’honneur de l’Eternel, et ils cesseront de suivre les mauvais penchants de leur coeur.
At that time they shall cal Ierusalem, The throne of the Lord, and all the nations shall be gathered vnto it, euen to the Name of the Lord in Ierusalem: and thence foorth they shall follow no more the hardnesse of their wicked heart.
18 A cette époque, la maison de Juda ira se joindre à la maison d’Israël, et ensemble elles reviendront du pays du Nord au pays que j’ai donné comme héritage à vos ancêtres.
In those daies ye house of Iudah shall walke with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the lande of the North, into the lande, that I haue giuen for an inheritance vnto your fathers.
19 Et je pensais en moi-même: "Comme je veux te faire une place parmi mes enfants et te donner un pays de délices, un patrimoine, magnifique entre tous, parmi les nations!" Et j’ajoutais: "Tu m’appelleras "mon Père" et tu ne t’éloigneras plus de moi."
But I sayde, Howe did I take thee for children and giue thee a pleasant lande, euen the glorious heritage of the armies of the heathen, and saide, Thou shalt call mee, saying, My father, and shalt not turne from me?
20 Cependant, comme une épouse qui trahit son compagnon, ainsi vous m’avez trahi, maison d’Israël, dit l’Eternel.
But as a woman rebelleth against her husband: so haue yee rebelled against me, O house of Israel, sayeth the Lord.
21 On entend du bruit sur les hauteurs: ce sont les sanglots, les supplications des enfants d’Israël! Car leur conduite a été dépravée, ils ont oublié l’Eternel, leur Dieu.
A voice was heard vpon the hie places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel: for they haue peruerted their way, and forgotten the Lord their God.
22 Revenez, ô enfants rebelles! Je guérirai vos égarements. Nous voici, nous allons à toi, car tu es l’Eternel, notre Dieu.
O yee disobedient children, returne and I wil heale your rebellions. Behold, we come vnto thee, for thou art the Lord our God.
23 A coup sûr, ce n’était que mensonge ce qui venait des collines, ces attroupements dans les montagnes! à coup sûr, c’est en l’Eternel, notre Dieu, qu’est le salut d’Israël!
Truely the hope of the hilles is but vaine, nor the multitude of mountaines: but in the Lord our God is the health of Israel.
24 Et c’est ce culte honteux qui a dévoré, dès notre jeunesse, le fruit du labeur de nos pères, leurs brebis et leurs boeufs, leurs fils et leurs filles!
For confusion hath deuoured our fathers labour, from our youth their sheepe and their bullocks, their sonnes and their daughters.
25 Couchons-nous dans notre honte, enveloppons-nous de notre ignominie, puisque nous avons péché contre l’Eternel, notre Dieu, nous et nos ancêtres, dès notre jeune âge et jusqu’à ce jour, faute d’écouter la voix de l’Eternel, notre Dieu.
Wee lie downe in our confusion, and our shame couereth vs: for we haue sinned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers from our youth, euen vnto this day, and haue not obeyed the voyce of the Lord our God.
