Jérémie 29
1 Voici les termes de la lettre que le prophète Jérémie adressa de Jérusalem aux survivants parmi les Anciens de la captivité, aux prêtres, aux prophètes et à toute la population que Nabuchodonosor avait déportés de Jérusalem à Babylone,
And these are the words of the letter which Jeremiah, the prophet, sent from Jerusalem to the remnant of the elders of the transmigration, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had led away from Jerusalem to Babylon,
2 après que le roi leconia, avec la reine-mère et les chambellans, les princes de Juda et de Jérusalem ainsi que les forgerons et serruriers étaient sortis de Jérusalem.
after king Jeconiah, with the queen, and the eunuchs, and the leaders of Judah and of Jerusalem, and the craftsmen and engravers, had departed from Jerusalem.
3 Par l’intermédiaire d’Elassa, fils de Chafan, et de Ghemaria, fils de Hilkia, que Sédécias, roi de Juda, avait envoyés à Babylone, auprès de Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, il leur mandait:
It was sent by the hand of Elasah, the son of Shaphan, and by Gemariah, the son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah, the king of Judah, sent to Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, saying:
4 "Ainsi parle l’Eternel-Cebaot, Dieu d’Israël, à tous les exilés que j’ai déportés de Jérusalem à Babylone:
“Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all who have been taken away, whom I have caused to be transferred from Jerusalem to Babylon:
5 Bâtissez des maisons et habitez-les, plantez des jardins et mangez-en les fruits.
Build houses and live in them. And plant gardens, and eat from their fruit.
6 Epousez des femmes et mettez au monde fils et filles; donnez des femmes à vos fils, des maris à vos filles, afin qu’elles aient des enfants. Multipliez-vous là-bas et ne diminuez pas en nombre.
Take wives, and conceive sons and daughters. And give wives to your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, and let them bear sons and daughters. And be multiplied there, and do not choose to be few in number.
7 Travaillez enfin à la prospérité de la ville où je vous ai relégués et implorez Dieu en sa faveur; car sa prospérité est le gage de votre prospérité.
And seek the peace of the city, to which I have caused you to be taken away, and pray to the Lord on its behalf. For your peace will be in its peace.
8 Oui, ainsi parle l’Eternel-Cebaot, Dieu d’Israël: Ne vous laissez pas induire en erreur par vos prophètes que vous comptez dans votre sein, n’ayez nul égard à vos songes que vous provoquez;
For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not allow your prophets and your diviners, who are in your midst, to seduce you. And you should pay no attention to your dreams, which you are dreaming.
9 car c’est mensongèrement qu’ils vous débitent des prophéties en mon nom: je ne les ai chargés d’aucune mission, dit l’Eternel.
For they prophesy falsely to you in my name, and I have not sent them, says the Lord.
10 Voici, en vérité, ce que dit l’Eternel: Quand Babylone sera au terme de soixante-dix ans pleinement révolus, je prendrai soin de vous et j’accomplirai en votre faveur ma bienveillante promesse de vous ramener en ces lieux;
For thus says the Lord: When the seventy years will begin to be completed in Babylon, I will visit you. And I will raise up over you my good word, so that I may lead you back to this place.
11 car je connais bien, moi, les desseins que j’ai conçus à votre égard, dit l’Eternel, desseins qui visent votre bonheur et non votre malheur et vous assurent un avenir plein d’espérances.
For I know the thoughts that I think over you, says the Lord: thoughts of peace and not of affliction, so that I may give you patience and an end.
12 Alors vous m’invoquerez et vous pourrez vous mettre en route, vous m’adresserez des prières et je vous exaucerai.
And you shall call upon me, and you shall go forth. And you shall pray to me, and I will heed you.
13 Vous vous mettrez en quête de moi et vous me trouverez, oui, si vous me recherchez de tout votre coeur.
You shall seek me. And you will find me, when you have sought me with your whole heart.
14 Je vous deviendrai accessible, dit l’Eternel, je ramènerai vos exilés, je vous rassemblerai du milieu de toutes les nations et de toutes les localités où je vous ai relégués, dit l’Eternel, et je vous ferai réintégrer les lieux d’où je vous ai bannis.
And I will be found by you, says the Lord. And I will lead you back from your captivity. And I will gather you from all the nations and all the places, to which I have expelled you, says the Lord. And I will return you from the place to which I sent you into captivity.
15 Que si vous dites: l’Eternel nous a suscité des prophètes à Babylone.
For you have said: ‘The Lord has raised up prophets for us in Babylon.’
16 Eh bien! Voici comment l’Eternel s’exprime au sujet du roi assis sur le trône de David, au sujet de tout le peuple qui réside en cette ville, de vos frères qui ne sont pas partis en exil avec vous;
For thus says the Lord, to the king who sits upon the throne of David, and to all the people who live in this city, to your brothers who have not departed with you in the transmigration:
17 voici ce que déclare l’Eternel-Cebaot: Je vais déchaîner contre eux le glaive, la famine et la peste, et les rendre semblables à des figues exécrables qu’on ne peut manger tant elles sont mauvaises.
Thus says the Lord of hosts: Behold, I will send among them the sword, and famine, and pestilence. And I will make them like the bad figs, which cannot be eaten, because they are very bad.
18 Je m’attacherai à leur poursuite avec le glaive, la famine et la peste; je ferai d’eux une épouvante pour tous les royaumes de la terre, un objet d’imprécation, de stupeur, de dérision et d’opprobre parmi tous les peuples où je les aurai relégués;
And I will pursue them with the sword, and with famine, and with pestilence. And I will give them over to affliction, amid all the kingdoms of the earth: as a curse, and in stupor, and with hissing, and as a disgrace among all the nations to which I have driven them out.
19 et cela, parce qu’ils n’ont pas prêté attention à mes discours, déclare l’Eternel, lorsque, sans cesse et dès la première heure, j’envoyais auprès d’eux mes serviteurs les prophètes; mais vous n’avez point écouté, dit l’Eternel.
For they have not listened to my words, says the Lord, which I sent to them through my servants, the prophets, rising while it was still night, and sending. But you have not listened, says the Lord.
20 Or, vous donc, écoutez la parole de l’Eternel, vous tous, exilés, que j’ai envoyés de Jérusalem à Babylone!
Therefore, listen to the word of the Lord, all you of the transmigration, whom I have sent away from Jerusalem into Babylon.
21 Voici ce que. dit l’Eternel-Cebaot, Dieu d’Israël, touchant Achab, fils de Kolaya, et Sédécias, fils de Masseya, qui vous adressent des prophéties mensongères en mon nom: "Je vais les livrer au pouvoir de Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, qui les fera périr sous vos yeux."
Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to Ahab, the son of Kolaiah, and to Zedekiah, the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy falsely to you in my name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, and he will strike them down before your eyes.
22 Et on leur empruntera une formule de malédiction à l’usage de tous les exilés de Juda, qui se trouvent à Babylone, on dira: "Que l’Eternel te rende semblable à Sédécias et à Achab, que le roi de Babylone a fait consumer par les flammes!"
And a curse will be taken up about them, by all the captives of Judah that are in Babylon, saying: ‘May the Lord make you like Zedekiah, and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon fried in the fire!’
23 C’Est qu’ils ont commis des infamies en Israël, en déshonorant les femmes de leurs amis, en prononçant en mon nom des discours mensongers que je ne leur ai point dictés; je le sais, moi, et je puis l’attester, dit l’Eternel.
For they have acted foolishly in Israel, and they have committed adultery with the wives of their friends, and they have spoken lying words in my name, which I did not command them. I am the Judge and the Witness, says the Lord.
24 Et à Chemaya, le Néhélamite, tu diras ce qui suit:
And to Shemaiah of Nehelam, you shall say:
25 Ainsi parle l’Eternel-Cebaot, Dieu d’Israël: Puisque tu t’es permis d’adresser, en ton nom, à tout le peuple de Jérusalem, à Cefania, fils de Masseya, le prêtre, et à tous les prêtres, des lettres conçues en ces termes:
Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Similarly, you have sent letters in your name to all the people that are in Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah, the son of Maaseiah, the priest, and to all the priests, saying:
26 L’Eternel t’a établi pontife à la place de Joïada le prêtre pour exercer, dans la maison de Dieu, une surveillance étroite sur tous les gens exaltés et vaticinant, pour les jeter en prison et mettre aux fers;
‘The Lord has made you priest in place of Jehoiada, the priest, so that you would be the ruler in the house of the Lord over every man who raves and prophesies, to send him to the stocks and to prison.
27 et pourquoi donc n’as-tu pas admonesté Jérémie d’Anatot qui fait le prophète parmi vous?
And now why have you not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth, who prophesies to you?
28 C’Est à ce titre qu’il nous a envoyé ce message à Babylone: Elle sera longue la captivité, bâtissez des maisons et habitez-les, plantez des jardins et mangez-en les fruits."
For about this, he has sent to us in Babylon, saying: It is a long time. Build houses and live in them. And plant gardens, and eat from their fruits.’”
29 Or, le prêtre Cefania avait donné lecture de cette lettre au prophète Jérémie.
Thus, Zephaniah, the priest, read this letter, in the hearing of Jeremiah the prophet.
30 La parole de l’Eternel fut adressée à Jérémie en ces termes:
And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying:
31 "Mande à tous les exilés les paroles suivantes Voici ce que décrète l’Eternel au sujet de Chemaya, le Néhélamite: Puisque Chemaya vous a adressé des prophéties, sans que je lui en aie donné mission, puisqu’il vous a leurrés par de fausses assurances,
“Send to all those of the transmigration, saying: Thus says the Lord to Shemaiah of Nehelam: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, though I did not send him, and because he has caused you to trust in a lie:
32 eh bien! voici ce que dit l’Eternel Je vais sévir contre Chemaya, le Néhélamite, et contre sa race Il n’y aura plus aucun des siens établi parmi ce peuple, il ne sera pas témoin du bien que je ferai à mon peuple, dit l’Eternel; car il a prêché la révolte contre l’Eternel."
For this reason, thus says the Lord: Behold, I will visit upon Shemaiah of Nehelam, and upon his offspring. There will not be, for him, even one man sitting in the midst of this people. And he will not see the good that I will accomplish for my people, says the Lord. For he has spoken a betrayal against the Lord.”
