Jérémie 13
1 Ainsi me parla l’Eternel: "Va, achète-toi une ceinture de lin et attache-la sur tes reins, mais ne la trempe pas dans l’eau."
Thus saith the Lord to me: Go, and get thee a linen girdle, and thou shalt put it about thy loins, and shalt not put it into water.
2 J’Achetai la ceinture, suivant la parole de l’Eternel, et l’attachai sur mes reins.
And I got a girdle accoding to the word of the Lord, and put it about my loins.
3 De nouveau la parole de l’Eternel me fut adressée en ces termes:
And the word of the Lord came to me the second time, saying:
4 "Prends la ceinture que tu as achetée, et qui couvre tes reins, mets-toi en route pour gagner l’Euphrate, et là tu l’enfouiras dans le creux d’un rocher."
Take the girdle which thou hast got, which is about thy loins, and arise, and go to the Euphrates, and hide it there in a hole of the rock.
5 J’Allai donc l’enfouir près de l’Euphrate, comme l’Eternel me l’avait ordonné.
And I went, and hid it by the Euphrates, as the Lord had commanded me.
6 Après de longs jours, l’Eternel me dit: "Rends-toi près de l’Euphrate et retire de là la ceinture que je t’avais prescrit d’y enfouir."
And it came to pass after many days, that the Lord said to me: Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take from thence the girdle, which I commanded thee to hide there.
7 Je me rendis près de l’Euphrate, je creusai et retirai la ceinture de 'l’endroit où je l’avais enfouie. Or voici, la ceinture était détériorée et ne pouvait plus servir à rien.
And I went to the Euphrates, and digged, and took the girdle out of the place where I had hid it: and behold the girdle was rotten, so that it was fit for no use.
8 Alors la parole de l’Eternel me fut adressée en ces termes:
And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
9 "Ainsi parle l’Eternel: C’Est à cet état que je réduirai l’orgueil de Juda et l’orgueil de Jérusalem, qui sont si grands.
Thus saith the Lord: after this manner will I make the pride of Juda, and the great pride of Jerusalem to rot.
10 Ce peuple pervers, qui refuse d’écouter mes paroles, suit les penchants de son coeur, s’attache à d’autres dieux, les adore et s’agenouille devant eux, il deviendra comme cette ceinture qui ne sert plus à rien.
This wicked people, that will not hear my words, and that walk in the perverseness of their heart, and have gone after strange gods to serve them, and to adore them: and they shall be as this girdle which is fit for no use.
11 En effet, de même qu’on porte sa ceinture nouée aux reins, ainsi je m’étais attaché toute la maison d’Israël et toute la maison de Juda, dit l’Eternel, destinées qu’elles étaient à devenir mon peuple, mon titre de gloire, mon honneur et ma parure: mais elles n’ont pas obéi.
For as the girdle sticketh close to the loins of a man, so have I brought close to me all of the house of Israel, and all the house of Juda, saith the Lord: that they might be my people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.
12 Tu leur adresseras donc ces paroles: "Voici ce que dit l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël: Chaque outre est faite pour être remplie de vin." Ils te répondront: "Mais ne savons-nous pas parfaitement que chaque outre est faite pour être remplie de vin?"
Thou shalt speak therefore to them this word: Thus saith the Lord God of Israel: Every bottle shall be filled with wine, and they shall say to thee: Do we not know that every bottle shall be filled with wine?
13 Et tu leur répliqueras: "Voici ce que dit l’Eternel: Tous les habitants de ce pays, ainsi que les rois, issus de David, qui siègent sur son trône, et les prêtres et les prophètes, et tous les habitants de Jérusalem, je vais les remplir d’ivresse.
And thou shalt say to them: Thus saith the Lord: Behold I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, and the kings of the race of David that sit upon his throne, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. with drunkenness.
14 Puis je les briserai les uns contre les autres, les pères et les fils ensemble, dit l’Eternel; ni pitié, ni compassion, ni miséricorde, ne m’empêcheront de les détruire."
And I will scatter them every man from his brother, and fathers and sons in like manner, saith the Lord: I will not spare, and I will not pardon: nor will I have mercy, but to destroy them.
15 Ecoutez, soyez tout oreilles, n’y mettez aucun orgueil, puisque c’est l’Eternel qui parle.
Hear ye, and give ear: Be not proud, for the Lord hath spoken.
16 Rendez hommage à l’Eternel, votre Dieu, avant que la nuit arrive, avant que vos pieds trébuchent contre des montagnes ténébreuses, alors que vous aspirerez à la clarté et qu’il l’aura transformée en ombres mortelles, convertie en obscurité profonde.
Give ye glory to the Lord your God, before it be dark, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains: you shall look for light, and he will turn it into the shadow of death, and into darkness.
17 Mais si vous n’écoutez pas ceci, mon âme, en secret, pleurera sur cette arrogance, et mes yeux seront inondés, se répandront en larmes, puisque le troupeau de l’Eternel aura été capturé.
But if you will not hear this, my soul shall weep in secret for your pride: weeping it shall weep, and my eyes shall run down the tears, because the flock of the Lord is carried away captive.
18 Dis au roi et à la reine: "Asseyez-vous très bas, car votre couronne est tombée, votre magnifique diadème!
Say to the king, and to the queen: Humble yourselves, sit down: for the crown of your glory is come down from your head.
19 Les villes du Midi ont été fermées, et personne ne les rouvre; tout Juda a été emmené en exil, son exil est complet.
The cities of the south are shut up, and there is none to open them: all Juda is carried away captive with an entire captivity.
20 Levez les yeux et voyez-les qui arrivent du Nord: où est le troupeau qui te fut confié, tes magnifiques brebis?
Lift up your eyes, and see, you that come from the north: where is the flock that is given thee, thy beautiful cattle?
21 Que diras-tu quand Dieu te donnera comme maîtrestoi-même des as dressés pour celaet placera à ta tête ceux qui sont tes amis? Certes, tu seras assaillie de douleurs comme une femme qui enfante.
What wilt thou say when he shall visit thee? for thou hast taught them against thee, and instructed them against thy own head: shall not sorrows lay hold on thee, as a woman in labour?
22 Et si tu t’interroges en toi-même: "Pourquoi ces choses m’arrivent-elles?" C’Est à cause de la grandeur de tes forfaits que les bords de ta robe ont été relevés et tes talons frappés avec violence.
And if thou shalt say in thy heart: Why are these things come upon me? For the greatness of thy iniquity, thy nakedness is discovered, the soles of thy feet are defiled.
23 Le nègre peut-il changer sa peau, la panthère ses rayures? Vous seriez tout autant capables de faire le bien, vous qui êtes habitués à faire le mal!
If the Ethiopian can change his skin, or the leopard his spots: you may also do well, when you have learned evil.
24 Je les disperserai donc comme le chaume emporté au vent du désert.
And I will scatter them as stubble, which is carried away by the wind in the desert.
25 Voilà ton lot, la part qui t’est assignée par moi, dit l’Eternel, puisque tu m’as oublié et as mis ta confiance dans le mensonge.
This is thy lot, and the portion of thy measure from me, saith the Lord, because thou hast forgotten me, and hast trusted in falsehood.
26 Aussi rabattrai-je, moi, les pans de ton vêtement sur ton visage, et visible sera ta honte.
Wherefore I have also bared my thighs against thy face, and thy shame hath appeared.
27 Tes adultères, tes exclamations lascives, l’infamie de tes débauches sur les collines, dans les champs, je les ai observées, tes abominations. Malheur à toi, Jérusalem! Tu ne saurais te purifier: combien de temps en sera-t-il encore ainsi?
I have seen thy adulteries, and thy neighing, the wickedness of thy fornication: and thy abominations, upon the hills in the field. Woe to thee, Jerusalem, wilt thou not be made clean after me: how long yet?
