Isaïe 48

1 Ecoutez ceci, maison de Jacob, vous qui vous réclamez du nom d’Israël, qui êtes issus de la source de Juda, qui jurez par le nom de l’Eternel et invoquez le Dieu d’Israël non toutefois avec sincérité et droiture!

Hear ye this—O house of Jacob, Ye who call yourselves by the name of Israel, Yea from the waters of Judah, came they forth, —Who swear by the name of Yahweh, And, by the God of Israel, call to remembrance—Not in truth, nor in righteousness;

2 Car ils se désignent d’après la Ville sainte et s’appuient sur le Dieu d’Israël, sur Celui qui s’appelle Eternel-Cebaot!

For of the holy city, do they call themselves, And on the God of Israel, do they stay themselves, —Yahweh of hosts, is his name.

3 Les choses passées, je les ai annoncées longtemps d’avance. Une fois énoncées par ma bouche et prédites par moi, soudain je les ai réalisées et elles se sont accomplies,

Things in advance, of old, I declared, Yea out of mine own mouth, came they forth, that I might let them be known, —Suddenly, I wrought and they came to pass.

4 parce que je savais que tu es opiniâtre, que ta nuque est une barre de fer et que ton front est d’airain.

Because I knew that—Obstinate, thou wast, —And, a sinew of iron, was thy neck, And thy brow, brazen,

5 D’Avance donc je t’ai informé, instruit des événements non encore arrivés, pour que tu ne dises pas: "Mon idole les a accomplis, mes statues de pierre et de métal les ont ordonnés."

therefore told I thee—in time past, Ere yet it came, I let thee hear, —Lest thou shouldest say Mine idol wrought them, Yea, my carved image and my molten image, commanded them!

6 Tu l’as entendu vois tout cela de tes propres yeux; et à présent ne parlerez-vous donc pas? Désormais je te révélerai des faits nouveaux, des faits encore cachés que tu ne connais pas,

Thou hast heard—see it whole, And will, ye, not tell? I have let thee hear new things—from the present time, Even secrets which ye knew not.

7 des faits qui se produisent maintenant, qui n’ont pas existé plus tôt; avant ce jour tu n’en as rien su, tu ne saurais dire: "Je les connaissais!"

Now, are they created, and not in time past, And, before to-day, thou hadst not heard of them, —Lest thou shouldest say, Lo! I knew them!

8 Non, tu n’en as rien entendu, rien connu; jamais ton oreille n’en a été frappée, parce que je savais que grande est ta perfidie et que tu as reçu ce nom: Infidèle dès le berceau.

Nay! thou hadst not heard, Nay! thou hadst not known, Nay! in time past, thine ear, was not opened, —For I knew that thou, wouldst be treacherous, Yea a transgressor from birth, hast thou been called.

9 Pour l’honneur de mon nom je retiens longtemps ma colère, en faveur de ma gloire je la comprime, pour ne pas te perdre.

For the sake of mine own Name, will I defer mine anger, And for my praise, will I restrain myself towards thee, —So as not to cut thee off.

10 Certes, je t’ai éprouvée mais non comme on éprouve l’argent, je t’ai fait passer par le creuset du malheur.

Lo! I have refined thee, but not as silver, —I have tested thee, in a smelting-pot of affliction.

11 C’Est pour moi, pour moi que je le fais, car pourquoi mon honneur serait-il terni? Cet honneur, je ne le prête à nul autre!

For mine own sake—for mine own sake, will I effectually work For how should it be profaned? And, my glory—to another, will I not give.

12 Ecoute-moi, Jacob, et toi Israël, mon prédestiné! Je suis toujours le même, je suis le Premier comme je suis le Dernier.

Hearken unto me O Jacob, And Israel, my called one, —I, am, the Same I, the first, yea, I, the last:

13 C’Est ma main qui a fondé la terre, ma droite qui a étendu les cieux. Je leur adresse mon appel: aussitôt ils se présentent.

Surely, mine own hand, founded the earth, And, my right hand, stretched out the heavens, —While I was calling unto them, they stood forth, at once

14 Assemblez-vous tous et écoutez! Qui parmi eux a annoncé ces choses? Il est aimé du Seigneur, il accomplit sa volonté contre Babel et manifeste sa puissance contre la Chaldée.

Assemble yourselves—all of you and hear, Who among them, hath told these things? he whom Yahweh loveth, will execute—His pleasure, on Babylon, And his stroke on the Chaldeans.

15 Moi, moi j’ai prononcé, je l’ai appelé, je l’ai amené, et il réussira dans son entreprise.

I—I, have spoken, Yea I have called him, —I have brought him in, and he shall make prosperous his way.

16 Approchez de moi, écoutez ceci! Dès le début, je n’ai point parlé en secret; du jour où l’événement s’est réalisé, j’étais présent. Et maintenant, dit le prophète, le Seigneur, l’Eternel m’envoie, et son inspiration est en moi.

Draw ye near unto me—hear ye this, Not in advance in secret, have I spoken, From the very time it cometh into being, there, am I, —And, now, My Lord Yahweh hath sent me and his spirit.

17 Ainsi parle l’Eternel, ton libérateur, le Saint d’Israël: "Je suis l’Eternel, ton Dieu, qui t’instruis pour ton bien, qui te dirige dans la voie que tu dois suivre.

Thus saith Yahweh—Thy Redeemer, The Holy One of Israel, —I—Yahweh, am thy God, Teaching thee to profit, Guiding thee in the way thou shouldest go.

18 Ah! Si seulement tu obéissais à mes ordres, ta prospérité serait comme le fleuve, et ton bonheur comme les flots de la mer;

Oh! that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments, —Then had been, like a river, thy prosperity, And, thy righteousness, like the waves of the sea:

19 ta postérité serait nombreuse comme le sable, le fruit de tes entrailles comme les galets, et ton nom ne serait ni effacé ni aboli devant moi."

Then had been, like the sand, thy seed, And, the offspring of thy body, like the grains thereof, —Neither cut off nor destroyed had been his name from before me.

20 Sortez de Babel, échappez-vous de Chaldée! Avec des accents joyeux, annoncez, proclamez la nouvelle, propagez-la jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre! Dites: L’Eternel a délivré son serviteur Jacob!

Come ye forth out of Babylon, Flee from among the Chaldeans, With triumphant voice, tell ye—let this be heard, Let it go forth as far as the end of the earth, —Say ye—Yahweh hath redeemed his servant Jacob!

21 Et ils n’ont pas souffert de la soif dans les lieux arides où il les a conduits; il a fait pour eux ruisseler l’eau du rocher, il a fendu le granit et les sources ont jailli!"

And they thirsted not, when, through dry places, he led them, Waters out of the rock, caused he to flow out to them, —Yea be cleft a rock and, there gushed out waters:

22 Point de paix, dit l’Eternel, pour les méchants!

No well-being, saith Yahweh to the lawless,
