Isaïe 40
1 Consolez, consolez mon peuple, dit votre Dieu.
Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.
2 Parlez au cœur de Jérusalem, et criez-lui que son temps d’épreuve est fini, que son crime est expié, qu’elle a reçu de la main du Seigneur double peine pour toutes ses fautes.
Speak ye [comfort] to the heart of Jerusalem, and call out unto her, that her time of sorrow is accomplished, that her iniquity is atoned for; for she hath received from the hand of the Lord double for all her sins.
3 Une voix proclame: "Dans le désert, déblayez la route de l’Eternel; nivelez, dans la campagne aride, une chaussée pour notre Dieu!
A voice calleth out, In the wilderness make ye clear the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for God.
4 Que toute vallée soit exhaussée, que toute montagne et colline s’abaissent, que les pentes se changent en plaines, les crêtes escarpées en vallons!
Every valley shall be raised, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the crooked shall be made a straight path, and the rough places a plain:
5 La gloire du Seigneur va se révéler, et toutes les créatures, ensemble, en seront témoins: c’est la bouche de l’Eternel qui le déclare."
And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed; and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
6 Une voix dit: "Proclame!" Et on a répondu: "Que proclamerai-je?" "Toute chair est comme de l’herbe, et toute sa beauté est comme la fleur des champs.
A voice saith, Proclaim; and he saith, What shall I proclaim? all flesh is grass, and all its goodliness is as the flower of the field:
7 L’Herbe se dessèche, la fleur se fane, quand l’haleine du Seigneur a soufflé sur elles. Or, le peuple est comme cette herbe.
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; because the breath of the Lord hath blown upon it; surely the people is grass.
8 L’Herbe se dessèche, la fleur se fane, mais la parole de notre Dieu subsiste à jamais."
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; but the word of our God will stand firm for ever.
9 Monte sur une montagne élevée, porteuse de bonnes nouvelles pour Sion, élève ta voix avec force, messagère de Jérusalem! Elève-la sans crainte, annonce aux villes de Juda: "Voici votre Dieu!"
Upon a high mountain get thee up, thou that bringest good tidings to Zion; lift up with strength thy voice, thou who bringest good tidings to Jerusalem; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold, [here is] your God!
10 Oui, voici le Seigneur, l’Eternel, s’avançant en héros, avec son bras triomphant; voici, il apporte son salaire avec lui, et sa rémunération le précède.
Behold, the Lord Eternal will come with might, and his arm ruleth for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.
11 Tel un berger, menant paître son troupeau, recueille les agneaux dans ses bras, les porte dans son sein et conduit avec douceur les mères qui allaitent.
Like a shepherd will he feed his flock: with his arm will he gather the lambs, and in his bosom will he carry them, will he lead gently those that suckle their young.
12 Qui a mesuré les eaux dans le creux de sa main, pris les dimensions du ciel à l’empan? Qui a jaugé la poussière de la terre, pesé au crochet les montagnes, et les coteaux avec une balance?
Who hath measured in the hollow of his hand the waters, and meted out the heavens with the span, and comprised in a measure the dust of the earth, and weighed in the scale-beam the mountains, and the hills in balances?
13 Qui a embrassé l’esprit de l’Eternel? Qui a été le conseiller de sa pensée?
Who hath meted out the Spirit of the Lord? and [who was] his counsellor that he could have given him information?
14 Avec qui a-t-il délibéré pour s’éclairer, pour apprendre la voie de la justice? Qui lui a donné des leçons de sagesse et indiqué le chemin de l’intelligence?
With whom took he counsel, that he gave him understanding, and taught him the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and caused him to know the way of understanding?
15 Certes, les nations, à ses yeux, sont comme une goutte tombant du seau, comme un grain de poussière dans la balance; certes, il ballotterait les îles comme des atomes.
Behold, nations are as a drop out of a bucket, and as the small dust of the balance are they accounted: behold, isles are like the flying dust.
16 Le Liban ne suffirait pas à nourrir le feu de son autel; ses bêtes ne suffiraient pas à un holocauste.
And Lebanon is not sufficient for burning, and its beasts do not suffice for burnt-offering.
17 Toutes les nations sont comme rien devant lui; il les considère comme le vide et le néant.
All the nations are as naught before him; less than nothing, and vanity are they accounted to him.
18 À qui donc pourriez-vous comparer Dieu et quelle image lui donneriez-vous comme pendant?
To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?
19 Une statue est coulée par le fondeur, plaquée d’or par l’orfèvre, qui la garnit encore de chaînettes d’argent.
The graven image the artificer hath cast and the goldsmith hath overspread it with gold, and fabricated [on it] silver chains.
20 Celui qui est trop pauvre pour une telle offrande choisit un bois incorruptible, puis s’en va chercher un ouvrier habile, pour fabriquer une idole qui ne bronche jamais.
He that is skilled in the choice chooseth a wood that will not rot; he seeketh unto himself a skilful workman to prepare a graven image, that shall not be moved.
21 Vous ne savez donc pas! Vous ne comprenez donc pas! Ne vous l’a-t-on pas appris dès l’origine? Ne saisissez-vous pas ce qu’enseignent les fondements de la terre?
Know ye not? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not paid attention to the foundations of the earth?
22 C’Est Lui qui siège au-dessus du globe de la terre, dont les habitants sont pour lui comme des sauterelles; c’est Lui qui déroule les cieux comme une tenture, qui les déploie comme un pavillon, pour sa résidence.
[It is he] that dwelleth above the circle of the earth, while its inhabitants are as grasshoppers; that stretched out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in;
23 C’Est lui qui réduit les princes à néant, qui fait un rien des arbitres du monde.
That bringeth princes to naught; rendering the judges of the earth as vanity.
24 À peine sont-ils plantés, à peine sont-ils semés, à peine leur tronc a-t-il pris racine dans le sol, que déjà il souffle sur eux et ils se dessèchent, et un ouragan les emporte comme le chaume.
Yes, they were not yet planted; yea, they were not yet sown; yea, their stem had not yet taken root in the earth: when he but breathed upon them, and they withered, and the storm-wind carrieth them away as stubble.
25 "À qui donc m’assimilerez-vous, à qui vais-je ressembler?" dit le Saint.
To whom then will ye liken me, that I should be equal to? saith the Holy One.
26 Levez les regards vers les cieux et voyez! Qui les a appelés à l’existence? Qui fait défiler leur armée en bon ordre? Tous, il les appelle par leur nom, et telle est sa puissance et son autorité souveraine que pas un ne fait défaut.
Lift up your eyes on high, and see who hath created these? he that bringeth out their host by number; that calleth them all by name; from the Mighty One not one escapeth.
27 Pourquoi dis-tu, ô Jacob, t’écries-tu, ô Israël: "Ma voie est inconnue à l’Eternel, mon droit échappe à mon Dieu?"
Why wilt thou say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, My way is hidden from the Lord, and my cause hath passed from the cognizance of my God?
28 Ne le sais-tu donc pas? Ne l’as-tu pas ouï dire? Le Seigneur est le Dieu de l’Eternité, le Créateur des dernières limites du monde; il n’éprouve ni fatigue, ni lassitude: il n’est point de bornes à son intelligence!
Dost thou not know? hast thou not heard? The God of everlasting is the Lord, is the Creator of the ends of the earth; he will not be faint and weary; unsearchable is his understanding.
29 Il redonne la vigueur au courbaturé et double le courage de celui qui est à bout de forces.
He giveth to the faint strength; and to the powerless he imparteth much might.
30 Que les adolescents soient las et harassés, que les jeunes gens tombent en défaillance!
Though youths should grow faint and be weary, and young men should utterly stumble:
31 Ceux qui mettent leur espoir en Dieu acquièrent de nouvelles forces, ils prennent le rapide essor des aigles; ils courent et ne sont pas fatigués, ils vont et ne se lassent point.
Yet they that wait upon the Lord shall acquire new strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk, and not become faint.
