Isaïe 36
1 Dans la quatorzième année du règne d’Ezéchias, Sennachérib, roi d’Assyrie, marcha contre toutes les villes fortes de la Judée et s’en empara.
And it cometh to pass, in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, come up hath Sennacherib king of Asshur against all the fenced cities of Judah, and seizeth them.
2 De Lakhich, le roi d’Assyrie envoya Rabchakè, avec une puissante armée, à Jérusalem contre le roi Ezéchias; il s’établit près de l’aqueduc de la Piscine supérieure, sur la route qui conduit au Champ des foulons.
And the king of Asshur sendeth Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem, unto the king Hezekiah, with a heavy force, and he standeth by the conduit of the upper pool, in the highway of the fuller's field,
3 Elyakim, fils de Hilkiyyahou, l’intendant du palais, Chebna, le secrétaire, et Yoah, fils d’Assaf, l’archiviste, se rendirent auprès de lui.
and go forth unto him doth Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who [is] over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the remembrancer.
4 Rabchakè leur dit: "Veuillez rapporter à Ezéchias ces paroles du grand roi, le roi d’Assyrie: Quel est donc l’appui dans lequel tu mets ta confiance?
And Rabshakeh saith unto them, 'Say ye, I pray you, unto Hezekiah, 'Thus said the great king, the king of Asshur, What [is] this confidence in which thou hast confided?
5 Je me disais: Ce ne sont que de vaines bravades, la guerre exige de la prudence et de la force. Sur qui donc comptes-tu, pour t’être révolté contre moi?
I have said: Only, a word of the lips! counsel and might [are] for battle: now, on whom hast thou trusted, that thou hast rebelled against me?
6 Ah oui, tu espères prendre pour soutien ce roseau brisé, l’Egypte, qui, lorsque quelqu’un s’y appuie, pénètre dans la main et la transperce! Car tel est Pharaon, roi d’Egypte, pour tous ceux qui se fient à lui.
'Lo, thou hast trusted on the staff of this broken reed — on Egypt — which a man leaneth on, and it hath gone into his hand, and pierced it — so [is] Pharaoh king of Egypt to all those trusting on him.
7 Tu me répliqueras peut-être: "Nous mettons notre confiance dans l’Eternel, notre Dieu!" Mais n’est-ce pas ce Dieu dont Ezéchias a fait disparaître les hauts-lieux et les autels en disant aux gens de Juda et de Jérusalem: Vous ne vous prosternerez que devant cet autel?
'And dost thou say unto me, Unto Jehovah our God we have trusted? is it not He, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath turned aside, and saith to Judah and to Jerusalem, Before this altar ye do bow yourselves?
8 Eh bien! Prends donc cet engagement envers mon maître, le roi d’Assyrie: je te fournirai deux mille chevaux, si tu peux trouver des cavaliers pour les monter.
'And now, negotiate, I pray thee, with my lord the king of Asshur, and I give to thee two thousand horses, if thou art able to put for thee riders on them.
9 Tu ne serais pas capable de repousser un simple gouverneur, un des moindres serviteurs de mon maître, et tu comptes sur l’Egypte pour avoir des chars et des cavaliers!
And how dost thou turn back the face of one captain of the least of the servants of my lord, and dost trust for thee on Egypt, for chariot and for horsemen?
10 D’Ailleurs, est-ce sans l’assentiment de l’Eternel que j’ai envahi ce pays pour le ravager? C’Est Dieu qui m’a dit: "Marche contre cette région et saccage-la."
And now, without Jehovah have I come up against this land to destroy it? Jehovah said unto me, Go up unto this land, and thou hast destroyed it.'
11 Elyakim, Chebna et Yoah dirent alors à Rabchakè: "Daigne parler à tes serviteurs en araméen, nous le comprenons; mais ne nous parle pas en judéen, qu’entendent les gens qui se trouvent sur les remparts."
And Eliakim saith — and Shebna and Joah — unto Rabshakeh, 'Speak, we pray thee, unto thy servants [in] Aramaean, for we are understanding; and do not speak unto us [in] Jewish, in the ears of the people who [are] on the wall.'
12 Rabchakè répondit: "Est-ce à ton maître et à toi que mon souverain m’a donné le mandat de tenir ce discours? N’Est-ce pas plutôt à ceux qui sont installés sur les remparts, condamnés en votre compagnie à manger leurs excréments et à boire leur urine?"
And Rabshakeh saith, 'Unto thy lord, and unto thee, hath my lord sent me to speak these words? is it not for the men — those sitting on the wall to eat their own dung and to drink their own water with you?'
13 Puis se mettant debout, il prononça d’une voix retentissante ces paroles en langue judéenne: "Ecoutez le message du grand roi, le roi d’Assyrie!
And Rabshakeh standeth and calleth with a great voice [in] Jewish, and saith, 'Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Asshur:
14 Voici ce qu’il dit: Ne vous laissez pas abuser par Ezéchias, car il est incapable de vous sauver.
Thus said the king, Let not Hezekiah lift you up, for he is not able to deliver you;
15 Ne vous laissez pas non plus induire par lui à mettre votre confiance en Dieu, lorsqu’il vous déclare: L’Eternel nous délivrera certainement, et cette ville ne tombera pas au pouvoir du roi d’Assyrie.
and let not Hezekiah make you trust unto Jehovah, saying, Jehovah doth certainly deliver us, this city is not given into the hand of the king of Asshur.
16 N’Écoutez pas Ezéchias, car voici ce que propose le roi d’Assyrie Manifestez à mon égard des sentiments pacifiques, rendez-vous auprès de moi, et chacun mangera les produits de sa vigne et de son figuier, et chacun boira l’eau de sa citerne,
'Do not hearken unto Hezekiah, for thus said the king of Asshur, Make ye with me a blessing, and come out unto me, and eat ye each of his vine, and each of his fig-tree, and drink ye each the waters of his own well,
17 jusqu’à ce que je vienne vous emmener dans un pays semblable au vôtre, un pays de blé et de vin, un pays de pain et de vignes.
till my coming in, and I have taken you unto a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards;
18 Prenez garde qu’Ezéchias ne vous abuse par ces paroles: "L’Eternel vous enverra le salut." Quelque dieu des autres nations a-t-il pu protéger son pays contre le roi d’Assyrie?
lest Hezekiah doth persuade you, saying, Jehovah doth deliver us. 'Have the gods of the nations delivered each his land out of the hand of the king of Asshur?
19 Où sont donc les dieux de Hamad et d’Arpad, où les dieux de Sefarvayim? Ont-ils arraché Samarie à ma domination?
Where [are] the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where the gods of Sepharvaim, that they have delivered Samaria out of my hand?
20 De tous les dieux de ces contrées, quel est celui qui a soustrait son pays à mon pouvoir? Et l’Eternel protègerait Jérusalem contre moi!"
Who among all the gods of these lands [are] they who have delivered their land out of my hand, that Jehovah doth deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?'
21 On garda le silence, personne ne dit mot, car tel était l’ordre du roi: "Vous ne lui répondrez rien." Elyakim, fils de Hilkiyyahou, l’intendant du palais, Chebna, le secrétaire, et Yoah, l’archiviste, retournèrent alors auprès d’Ezéchias, les vêtements déchirés, et lui rapportèrent les paroles de Rabchakè.
And they keep silent, and have not answered him a word, for a command of the king is, saying, 'Do not answer him.'
22 Elyakim, fils de Hilkiyyahou, l’intendant du palais, Chebna, le secrétaire, et Yoah, l’archiviste, retournèrent alors auprès d’Ezéchias, les vêtements déchirés, et lui rapportèrent les paroles de Rabchakè.
And Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who [is] over the house, cometh in, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the remembrancer, unto Hezekiah with rent garments, and they declare to him the words of Rabshakeh.
