Osée 4

1 Ecoutez la parole de l’Eternel, enfants d’Israël! car l’Eternel prend à partie les habitants de ce pays, parce qu’il n’y a ni vérité, ni bonté, ni connaissance de Dieu dans ce pays.

Hear the word of Yahweh, ye sons of Israel, —that, a controversy, hath Yahweh with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no faithfulness, nor lovingkindness, nor knowledge of God, in the land:

2 On n’y voit que parjure et mensonge, meurtre, vol et adultère; ils renversent toutes les barrières, et le sang se mêle au sang.

Cursing and lying, and killing and stealing, and committing adultery, have broken forth, and, blood-shedding, unto blood-shedding, doth extend.

3 C’Est pourquoi ce pays est en deuil, tous ses habitants languissent, en même temps que les bêtes des champs et les oiseaux du ciel; même les poissons de la mer périssent.

For this cause, shall the land mourn, and everyone who dwelleth therein shall languish, with the wild beast of the field and with the bird of the heavens, —moreover also, the fishes of the sea, shall be withdrawn.

4 Toutefois, que personne ne s’avise de faire des remontrances, que personne ne morigène! Ton peuple est de ceux qui récriminent contre le prêtre.

Howbeit let, no man, contend, nor let him rebuke another, —since, thy people, are as they who contend against a priest:

5 Aussi trébucheras-tu en plein jour et, avec toi, le prophète trébuchera la nuit; et j’en finirai avec ta mère.

So shouldst thou stumble in the daytime, and even the prophet stumble with thee, in the night, —and I should destroy thine own mother.

6 Mon peuple périt faute d’intelligence. Puisque tu as dédaigné, toi, l’intelligence, mon dédain ne te permettra pas de rester mon pontife; tu as oublié la doctrine de ton Dieu: moi de même, j’oublierai tes enfants.

My people, are destroyed, for lack of knowledge, —Because, thou, hast rejected knowledge, therefore will I reject thee from ministering as priest unto me, and, because thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I also, will forget thy children.

7 Avec leur puissance croissaient leurs péchés envers moi: je changerai donc leur gloire en opprobre.

As they were magnified, so, they sinned against me, —My glory—for what was contemptible, did they exchange.

8 Ils se nourrissent du péché de mon peuple, et leurs appétits cherchent satisfaction dans ses fautes.

The sin of my people, they do eat, —and. unto their iniquity, lift they up every man his desire.

9 Il en sera du peuple, comme du pontife! Je leur ferai expier leur conduite et leur revaudrai leurs œuvres.

So doth it come to be—like people, like priest, —therefore will I visit upon him his ways, and, his doings, will I bring back to him;

10 Ils mangeront sans se rassasier, s’adonneront à la débauche sans se multiplier, car ils ont renoncé à tenir compte de l’Eternel.

And they shall eat, and not be satisfied, they have encouraged unchastity, yet have not been making increase, —for unto, Yahweh, have they left off giving heed: —

11 La débauche, le vin et le moût leur enlèvent toute intelligence.

Unchastity, and wine, and new wine, take away the heart.

12 Mon peuple demande des oracles à son morceau de bois, et son bâton doit le renseigner: c’est que l’esprit de débauche l’a égaré, et il se prostitue en trahissant son Dieu.

My people, of their Wood, do ask, —Let, their Staff, then tell them, —for, the spirit of unchastity, hath led them astray, and they have unchastely departed from under their God.

13 Ils sacrifient sur le sommet des montagnes et brûlent de l’encens sur les coteaux, au pied du chêne, du peuplier blanc et du térébinthe: l’ombrage en est si agréable! C’Est pourquoi vos filles se prostituent et vos brus deviennent adultères.

On the headlands of the mountains, they sacrifice, and, on the hills, burn they incense, under oak and poplar and terebinth, because, pleasant, is the shade thereof: For this cause, do your daughters, become unchaste, and, your brides, commit adultery.

14 Je ne punirai pas vos filles parce qu’elles se prostituent ni vos brus parce qu’elles deviennent adultères, car eux-mêmes s’isolent avec des prostituées et sacrifient de concert avec les courtisanes sacrées. C’Est ainsi que se perd un peuple, faute de sens!

I do not bring punishment upon your daughters when they become unchaste, nor upon your brides, when they commit adultery, for, the men themselves, with unchaste women, do seclude themselves, and, with the common women of the shrine, do offer sacrifice, —and, a people who will not discern, must be ruined.

15 Si toi, ô Israël, tu te livres à la prostitution, que Juda du moins ne se rende pas coupable! N’Allez donc pas à Ghilgal, ne montez pas à Beth-Awên, et ne jurez pas "par la vie de l’Eternel!"

Though unchaste art thou, O Israel, let not Judah, become guilty, neither let them enter Gilgal, nor go up to Beth-aven, and [then] swear, By the life of Yahweh!

16 Si les gens d’Israël sont indociles comme une vache vicieuse, le Seigneur devra-t-il donc les faire pâturer comme des brebis dans de vastes prairies?

For, as a heifer that is stubborn, hath Israel, been stubborn, —Now, can Yahweh, turn them out to pasture, like a young ram in a wide place?

17 Ephraïm est collé aux idoles, qu’on le laisse!

Mated with idols, is Ephraim, let him alone.

18 Leur ivresse est-elle passée, ils s’adonnent à la débauche; ils se complaisent dans l’opprobre, ceux qui doivent les protéger!

Their drinking-bout, having passed, —they became, unchaste, they loved wildly, a contempt, became her great men.

19 Un vent les enveloppera dans ses ailes, alors ils auront honte de leurs sacrifices.

The wind hath bound her up in its wings, —that they may be ashamed, because of their sacrifices.
