Genèse 41
1 Après un intervalle de deux années, Pharaon eut un songe, où il se voyait debout au bord du fleuve.
Now after two years had gone by, Pharaoh had a dream; and in his dream he was by the side of the Nile;
2 Et voici que du fleuve sortaient sept vaches belles et grasses, qui se mirent à paître dans l’herbage;
And out of the Nile came seven cows, good-looking and fat, and their food was the river-grass.
3 puis sept autres vaches sortirent du fleuve après elles, celles là chétives et maigres et s’arrêtèrent près des premières au bord du fleuve;
And after them seven other cows came out of the Nile, poor-looking and thin; and they were by the side of the other cows.
4 et les vaches chétives et maigres dévorèrent les sept vaches belles et grasses. Alors Pharaon s’éveilla.
And the seven thin cows made a meal of the seven fat cows. Then Pharaoh came out of his sleep.
5 Il se rendormit et eut un nouveau songe. Voici que sept épis, pleins et beaux, s’élevaient sur une seule tige;
But he went to sleep again and had a second dream, in which he saw seven heads of grain, full and good, all on one stem.
6 puis sept épis maigres et flétris par le vent d’est, s’élevèrent après eux,
And after them came up seven other heads, thin and wasted by the east wind.
7 et ces épis maigres engloutirent les sept épis grenus et pleins. Pharaon s’éveilla et c’était un songe.
And the seven thin heads made a meal of the good heads. And when Pharaoh was awake he saw it was a dream.
8 Mais, le matin venu, son esprit en fut troublé et il manda tous les magiciens de l’Égypte et tous ses savants. Pharaon leur exposa son rêve, mais nul ne put lui en expliquer le sens.
And in the morning his spirit was troubled; and he sent for all the wise men of Egypt and all the holy men, and put his dream before them, but no one was able to give him the sense of it.
9 Alors le maître échanson parla devant Pharaon en ces termes: "Je rappelle, en cette occasion, mes fautes.
Then the chief wine-servant said to Pharaoh, The memory of my sin comes back to me now;
10 Un jour, Pharaon était irrité contre ses serviteurs; et il nous fit enfermer dans la maison du chef des gardes, moi et le maître panetier.
Pharaoh had been angry with his servants, and had put me in prison in the house of the captain of the army, together with the chief bread-maker;
11 Nous eûmes un rêve la même nuit, lui et moi, chacun selon le pronostic de son rêve.
And we had a dream on the same night, the two of us, and the dreams had a special sense.
12 Là était avec nous un jeune hébreu, esclave du chef des gardes. Nous lui racontâmes nos songes et il nous les interpréta, à chacun selon le sens du sien.
And there was with us a young Hebrew, the captain's servant, and when we put our dreams before him, he gave us the sense of them.
13 Or, comme il nous avait pronostiqué, ainsi fut-il: moi, je fus rétabli dans mon poste et lui on le pendit."
And it came about as he said: I was put back in my place, and the bread-maker was put to death by hanging.
14 Pharaon envoya quérir Joseph, qu’on fit sur le champ sortir de la geôle; il se rasa et changea de vêtements, puis il parut devant Pharaon.
Then Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and they took him quickly out of prison; and when his hair had been cut and his dress changed, he came before Pharaoh.
15 Et Pharaon dit à Joseph: "J’Ai eu un songe et nul ne l’explique; mais j’ai ouï dire, quant à toi, que tu entends l’art d’interpréter un songe."
And Pharaoh said to Joseph, I have had a dream, and no one is able to give me the sense of it; now it has come to my ears that you are able to give the sense of a dream when it is put before you.
16 Joseph répondit à Pharaon en disant: "Ce n’est pas moi, c’est Dieu, qui saura tranquilliser Pharaon."
Then Joseph said, Without God there will be no answer of peace for Pharaoh.
17 Alors Pharaon parla ainsi à Joseph: "Dans mon songe, je me tenais au bord du fleuve.
Then Pharaoh said, In my dream I was by the side of the Nile:
18 Et voici que du fleuve sortirent sept vaches grasses et de belle taille, qui vinrent paître dans l’herbage;
And out of the Nile came seven cows, fat and good-looking, and their food was the river-grass;
19 puis sept autres vaches les suivirent, maigres, d’apparence fort chétive et toutes décharnées: je n’en ai point vu d’aussi misérables dans tout le pays d’Égypte.
Then after them came seven other cows, very thin and poor-looking, worse than any I ever saw in the land of Egypt;
20 Ces vaches maigres et chétives dévorèrent les sept premières vaches, les grasses.
And the thin cows made a meal of the seven fat cows who came up first;
21 Celles ci donc passèrent dans leur corps, mais on ne se serait pas douté qu’elles y eussent passé: elles étaient chétives comme auparavant. Je m’éveillai.
And even with the fat cows inside them they seemed as bad as before. And so I came out of my sleep.
22 Puis je vis en songe sept épis, s’élevant sur une même tige, pleins et beaux;
And again in a dream I saw seven heads of grain, full and good, coming up on one stem:
23 ensuite sept épis secs, maigres, brûlés par le vent d’est, s’élevèrent après eux,
And then I saw seven other heads, dry, thin, and wasted by the east wind, coming up after them:
24 et ces épis maigres absorbèrent les sept beaux épis. Je l’ai raconté aux magiciens et nul ne me l’a expliqué."
And the seven thin heads made a meal of the seven good heads; and I put this dream before the wise men, but not one of them was able to give me the sense of it.
25 Joseph dit à Pharaon: "Le songe de Pharaon est un: ce que Dieu prépare, il l’a annoncé à Pharaon.
Then Joseph said, These two dreams have the same sense: God has made clear to Pharaoh what he is about to do.
26 Les sept belles vaches, ce sont sept années; les sept beaux épis, sept années: c’est un même songe.
The seven fat cows are seven years, and the seven good heads of grain are seven years: the two have the same sense.
27 Et les sept vaches maigres et laides qui sont sorties en second lieu, sept années, de même que les sept épis vides frappés par le vent d’est. Ce seront sept années de famine.
The seven thin and poor-looking cows who came up after them are seven years; and the seven heads of grain, dry and wasted by the east wind, are seven years when there will be no food.
28 C’Est bien ce que je disais à Pharaon ce que Dieu prépare, il l’a révélé à Pharaon.
As I said to Pharaoh before, God has made clear to him what he is about to do.
29 Oui, sept années vont venir, abondance extraordinaire dans tout le territoire d’Égypte.
Seven years are coming in which there will be great wealth of grain in Egypt;
30 Mais sept années de disette surgiront après elles et toute abondance disparaîtra dans le pays d’Égypte et la famine épuisera le pays.
And after that will come seven years when there will not be enough food; and the memory of the good years will go from men's minds; and the land will be made waste by the bad years;
31 Le souvenir de l’abondance sera effacé dans le pays par cette famine qui surviendra, car elle sera excessive.
And men will have no memory of the good time because of the need which will come after, for it will be very bitter.
32 Et si le songe s’est reproduit à Pharaon par deux fois, c’est que la chose est arrêtée devant Dieu, c’est que Dieu est sur le point de l’accomplir.
And this dream came to Pharaoh twice, because this thing is certain, and God will quickly make it come about.
33 Donc, que Pharaon choisisse un homme prudent et sage et qu’il le prépose au pays d’Égypte.
And now let Pharaoh make search for a man of wisdom and good sense, and put him in authority over the land of Egypt.
34 Que Pharaon avise à ce qu’on établisse des commissaires dans le pays et qu’on impose d’un cinquième le territoire d’Égypte durant les sept années d’abondance.
Let Pharaoh do this, and let him put overseers over the land of Egypt to put in store a fifth part of the produce of the land in the good years.
35 Qu’on amasse toute la nourriture de ces années fertiles qui approchent; qu’on emmagasine du blé sous la main de Pharaon, pour l’approvisionnement des villes et qu’on le tienne en réserve.
And let them get together all the food in those good years and make a store of grain under Pharaoh's control for the use of the towns, and let them keep it.
36 Ces provisions seront une ressource pour le pays, lors des sept années de disette qui surviendront en Égypte, afin que ce pays ne périsse pas par la famine."
And let that food be kept in store for the land till the seven bad years which are to come in Egypt; so that the land may not come to destruction through need of food.
37 Ce discours plut à Pharaon et à tous ses serviteurs.
And this seemed good to Pharaoh and to all his servants.
38 Et Pharaon dit à ses serviteurs: "Pourrions-nous trouver un homme tel que celui-ci, plein de l’esprit de Dieu?"
Then Pharaoh said to his servants, Where may we get such a man as this, a man in whom is the spirit of God?
39 Et Pharaon dit à Joseph: "Puisque Dieu t’a révélé tout cela, nul n’est sage et entendu comme toi.
And Pharaoh said to Joseph, Seeing that God has made all this clear to you, there is no other man of such wisdom and good sense as you:
40 C’Est toi qui sera le chef de ma maison; tout mon peuple sera gouverné par ta parole et je n’aurai sur toi que la prééminence du trône."
You, then, are to be over my house, and all my people will be ruled by your word: only as king will I be greater than you.
41 Pharaon dit à Joseph: "Vois! je te mets à la tête de tout le pays d’Égypte."
And Pharaoh said to Joseph, See, I have put you over all the land of Egypt.
42 Et Pharaon ôta son anneau de sa main et le passa à celle de Joseph; il le fit habiller de byssus et suspendit le collier d’or de son cou.
Then Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand and put it on Joseph's hand, and he had him clothed with the best linen, and put a chain of gold round his neck;
43 Il le fit monter sur son second char; on cria devant lui: Abrêk et il fut installé chef de tout le pays d’Égypte.
And he made him take his seat in the second of his carriages; and they went before him crying, Make way! So he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt.
44 Pharaon dit à Joseph: "Je suis le Pharaon; mais, sans ton ordre, nul ne remuera la main ni le pied dans tout le pays d’Égypte."
Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, I am Pharaoh; and without your order no man may do anything in all the land of Egypt.
45 Pharaon surnomma Joseph Çâfenath Panéah et il lui donna pour femme Asenath, fille de Pôti Féra, prêtre d’On. Joseph fit une excursion dans le pays d’Égypte.
And Pharaoh gave Joseph the name of Zaphnath-paaneah; and he gave him Asenath, the daughter of Poti-phera, the priest of On, to be his wife. So Joseph went through all the land of Egypt.
46 Or, Joseph avait trente ans lorsqu’il parut devant Pharaon, roi d’Egypte. Joseph, étant sorti de devant Pharaon, parcourut tout le pays d’Egypte.
Now Joseph was thirty years old when he came before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from before the face of Pharaoh and went through all the land of Egypt.
47 La terre, pendant les sept années de fertilité, produisit d’abondantes moissons.
Now in the seven good years the earth gave fruit in masses.
48 On amassa toutes les denrées des sept années, qui se trouvèrent dans le pays d’Égypte et l’on approvisionna les villes: on mit dans chaque ville les denrées des campagnes d’alentour.
And Joseph got together all the food of those seven years, and made a store of food in the towns: the produce of the fields round every town was stored up in the town.
49 Et Joseph fit des amas de blé considérables comme le sable de la mer; tellement qu’on cessa de le compter, car c’était incalculable.
So he got together a store of grain like the sand of the sea; so great a store that after a time he gave up measuring it, for it might not be measured.
50 Or, il naquit à Joseph, avant qu’arrivât la période de disette, deux fils, que lui donna Asenath, fille de Pôti Féra, prêtre d’On.
And before the time of need, Joseph had two sons, to whom Asenath, the daughter of Poti-phera, priest of On, gave birth.
51 Joseph appela le premier né Manassé: "Car Dieu m’a fait oublier toutes mes tribulations et toute la maison de mon père."
And to the first he gave the name Manasseh, for he said, God has taken away from me all memory of my hard life and of my father's house.
52 Au second, il donna le nom d’Éphraïm: "Car Dieu m’a fait fructifier dans le pays de ma misère."
And to the second he gave the name Ephraim, for he said, God has given me fruit in the land of my sorrow.
53 Quand furent écoulées les sept années de l’abondance qui régnait dans le pays d’Égypte,
And so the seven good years in Egypt came to an end.
54 survinrent les sept années dedisette, comme l’avait prédit Joseph. II y eut famine dans tous les pays, mais dans tout le pays d’Égypte il y avait du pain.
Then came the first of the seven years of need as Joseph had said: and in every other land they were short of food; but in the land of Egypt there was bread.
55 Tout le territoire égyptien étant affligé par la disette, le peuple demanda à grands cris, à Pharaon, du pain. Mais Pharaon répondit à tous les Égyptiens: "Allez à Joseph; ce qu’il vous dira, vous le ferez."
And when all the land of Egypt was in need of food, the people came crying to Pharaoh for bread; and Pharaoh said to the people, Go to Joseph, and whatever he says to you, do it.
56 Comme la famine régnait sur toute la contrée, Joseph ouvrit tous les greniers et vendit du blé aux Égyptiens. La famine persista dans le pays d’Égypte.
And everywhere on the earth they were short of food; then Joseph, opening all his store-houses, gave the people of Egypt grain for money; so great was the need of food in the land of Egypt.
57 De tous les pays on venait en Égypte pour acheter à Joseph, car la famine était grande dans toute la contrée.
And all lands sent to Egypt, to Joseph, to get grain, for the need was great over all the earth.
