1 Ainsi furent terminés les cieux et la terre, avec tout ce qu’ils renferment.
Thus were finished the heavens and the earth and all their host.
2 Dieu mit fin, le septième jour, à l’œuvre faite par lui; et il se reposa, le septième jour, de toute l’œuvre qu’il avait faite.
Thus God finished, on the seventh day his work which he had made, and rested, on the seventh day, from all his work which he had made.
3 Dieu bénit le septième jour et le proclama saint, parce qu’en ce jour il se reposa de l’œuvre entière qu’il avait produite et organisée.
And God blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it, —because therein, rested he from all his work which God, by creating, had made.
4 Telles sont les origines du ciel et de la terre, lorsqu’ils furent créés; à l’époque où l’Éternel-Dieu fit une terre et un ciel.
These are the geneses of the heavens and the earth when they were created, —in the day when Yahweh God made earth and heavens.
5 Or, aucun produit des champs ne paraissait encore sur la terre, et aucune herbe des champs ne poussait encore; car l’Éternel-Dieu n’avait pas fait pleuvoir sur la terre, et d’homme, il n’y en avait point pour cultiver la terre.
Now, no bush of the field, as yet—was in the earth, and, no herb of the field, as yet had sprung up, —because Yahweh God had not sent rain on the earth, and, man, was there none to till the ground;
6 Mais une exhalaison s’élevait de la terre et humectait toute la surface du sol.
but, a vapour, went up from the earth, —and watered all the face of the ground.
7 L’Éternel-Dieu façonna l’homme, —poussière détachée du sol, —fit pénétrer dans ses narines un souffle de vie, et l’homme devint un être vivant.
So then Yahweh God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed in his nostrils the breath of life—and man became a living soul.
8 L’Éternel-Dieu planta un jardin en Éden, vers l’orient, et y plaça l’homme qu’il avait façonné.
And Yahweh God planted a garden in Eden, on the east, —and put there the man whom he had formed.
9 L’Éternel-Dieu fit surgir du sol toute espèce d’arbres, beaux à voir et propres à la nourriture; et l’arbre de vie au milieu du jardin, avec l’arbre de la science du bien et du mal.
And Yahweh God, caused to spring up, out of the ground, every tree pleasant to the sight and good for food, —and the tree of life, in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 Un fleuve sortait d’Éden pour arroser le jardin; de là il se divisait et formait quatre bras.
Now, a river, was coming forth out of Eden, to water the garden, —and, from thence, it parted, and became four heads,
11 Le nom du premier: Pichon; c’est celui qui coule tout autour du pays de Havila, où se trouve l’or.
The name of the one, is Pishon, —the same, is that which surroundeth all the land of Havilah, where is gold;
12 L’Or de ce pays-là est bon; là aussi le bdellium et la pierre de chôham.
moreover the gold of that land, is good, —there, is the bdellium, and the beryl stone,
13 Le nom du deuxième fleuve: Ghihôn; c’est lui qui coule tout autour du pays de Kouch.
And the name of the second river, is Gihon, —the same, is that which surroundeth all the land of Cush,
14 Le nom du troisième fleuve: Hiddékel; c’est celui qui coule à l’orient d’Assur; et le quatrième fleuve était l’Euphrate.
And, the name of the third river, is Hiddekel, the same, is that which goeth in front of Assyria; and the fourth river, is Euphrates.
15 L’Éternel-Dieu prit donc l’homme et l’établit dans le jardin d’Eden pour le cultiver et le soigner.
So Yahweh God took the man, —and placed him in the garden of Eden, to till it and to keep it.
16 L’Éternel-Dieu donna un ordre à l’homme, en disant: "Tous les arbres du jardin, tu peux t’en nourrir;
And Yahweh God laid command on the man, saying, —Of every tree of the garden, thou mayest eat;
17 mais l’arbre de la science du bien et du mal, tu n’en mangeras point: car du jour où tu en mangeras, tu dois mourir!"
but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it, —for in the day thou eatest thereof, thou shalt die.
18 L’Éternel-Dieu dit: "Il n’est pas bon que l’homme soit isolé; je lui ferai une aide digne de lui."
And Yahweh God said, It is, not good, that the man should remain alone, —I will make for him a helper as his counterpart.
19 L’Éternel-Dieu avait formé de matière terrestre tous les animaux des champs et tous les oiseaux du ciel. Il les amena devant l’homme pour qu’il avisât à les nommer; et telle chaque espèce animée serait nommée par l’homme, tel serait son nom.
Now Yahweh God had formed from the ground every living thing of the field and every bird of the heavens, which he brought in unto the man, that he might see what he should call it, —and, whatsoever the man should call it—any living soul, that, should be the name thereof.
20 L’Homme imposa des noms à tous les animaux qui paissent, aux oiseaux du ciel, à toutes les bêtes sauvages; mais pour lui-même, il ne trouva pas de compagne qui lui fût assortie.
So the man gave names to all the tame-beasts, and to the birds of the heavens, and to all the wild-beasts of the field, —but, for man, had there not been found a helper as his counterpart.
21 L’Éternel-Dieu fit peser une torpeur sur l’Homme, qui s’endormi; il prit une de ses côtes, et forma un tissu de chair à la place.
So Yahweh God caused a deep sleep to fall on the man, and he slept, —and he took one of his ribs, and closed up flesh instead thereof.
22 L’Éternel-Dieu organisa en une femme la côte qu’il avait prise à l’homme, et il la présenta à l’homme.
And Yahweh God builded the rib which he had taken from the man, into a woman, and brought her in unto the man.
23 Et l’homme dit: "Celle-ci, pour le coup, est un membre extrait de mes membres et une chair de ma chair; celle-ci sera nommée Icha, parce qu’elle a été prise de Ich."
And the man said, This, one, now, is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh! This, one shall be called Woman, for, out of a man, hath this one been taken.
24 C’Est pourquoi l’homme abandonne son père et sa mère; il s’unit à sa femme, et ils deviennent une seule chair.
For this cause, will a man leave his father and his mother, and cleave unto his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
25 Or ils étaient tous deux nus, l’homme et sa femme, et ils n’en éprouvaient point de honte.
And they were both of them naked, the man and his wife, —and put not each other to shame.
