Genèse 18
1 Éternel se révéla à lui dans les plaines de Mamré, tandis qu’il était assis à l’entrée de sa tente, pendant la chaleur du jour.
The Lord appeared to Abraham at the oaks of Mamre. Abraham was sitting at the entrance to his tent as the day became really hot.
2 Comme il levait les yeux et regardait, il vit trois personnages debout prés de lui. En les voyant, il courut à eux du seuil de la tente et se prosterna contre terre.
He looked up and all of a sudden he saw three men standing there. As soon as he saw them, he ran over to meet them and bowed low to the ground.
3 Et il dit: "Seigneur, si j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, ne passe pas ainsi devant ton serviteur!
He said, “Sir, if you please, don't continue your journey without spending some time here with me, your servant.
4 Qu’on aille quérir un peu d’eau; lavez vos pieds et reposez-vous sous cet arbre.
Let me have some water brought so you can wash your feet and rest under the tree.
5 Je vais apporter une tranche de pain, vous réparerez vos forces, puis vous poursuivrez votre chemin, puisque aussi bien vous avez passé près de votre serviteur." Ils répondirent: "Fais ainsi que tu as dit".
Also let me bring some food so you can get your strength back before you go on your way, now that you've come to visit me here.” “That would be fine,” they answered. “Please do as you've suggested.”
6 Abraham rentra en hâte dans sa tente, vers Sara et dit: "Vite, prends trois mesures de farine de pur froment, pétris-la et fais-en des gâteaux."
Abraham hurried back to the tent and told Sarah, “Quick! Make some bread using three large measures of the best flour. Knead the dough and bake the bread.”
7 Puis, Abraham courut au troupeau, choisit un veau tendre et gras et le donna au serviteur, qui se hâta de l’accommoder.
Then Abraham ran to the cattle herd and chose a good, young calf and gave it to his servant who quickly killed and cooked it.
8 Il prit de la crème et du lait, puis le veau qu’on avait préparé et le leur servit: il se tenait devant eux, sous l’arbre, tandis qu’ils mangeaient.
Then he took some yogurt, milk, and the cooked meat, and placed the food in front of them. He stood nearby under a tree while they ate.
9 Ils lui dirent: "Où est Sara, ta femme?" Il répondit: "Elle est dans la tente."
“Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked him. “Over there, inside the tent,” he replied.
10 L’Un d’eux reprit: "Certes, je reviendrai à toi à pareille époque et voici, un fils sera né à Sara, ton épouse." Or, Sara l’entendait à l’entrée de la tente qui se trouvait derrière lui.
Then one said, “I promise you that I will come back to visit you about this time next year, and your wife Sarah will have a son.” Sarah was listening, hiding just inside the entrance to the tent behind him.
11 Abraham et Sara étaient vieux, avancés dans la vie; le tribut périodique des femmes avait cessé pour Sara.
Abraham and Sarah were old, getting on in years. Sarah was well past the age of having children.
12 Sara rit en elle-même disant: "Flétrie par l’âge, ce bonheur me serait réservé! Et mon époux est un vieillard!"
Sarah was laughing inside, saying to herself, “Now that I'm old and worn out, how would I experience pleasure? My husband is old too!”
13 Le Seigneur dit à Abraham: "Pourquoi Sara a-t-elle ri, disant: ‘Eh quoi! en vérité, j’enfanterais, âgée que je suis!’
The Lord asked Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and ask, ‘How could it possibly be true that I'll have a child now I'm so old?’
14 Est-il rien d’impossible au Seigneur? Au temps fixé, à pareille époque, je te visiterai et Sara sera mère".
Is anything too difficult for the Lord to do? I will come back next year when I said I would, in the spring, and Sarah will have a son.”
15 Sara protesta, en disant: "Je n’ai point ri"; car elle avait peur. II répondit "Non pas, tu as ri."
Sarah denied it because she was afraid, claiming, “I didn't laugh.” “Yes, you did laugh,” the Lord replied.
16 Les hommes se levèrent et fixèrent leurs regards dans la direction de Sodome; Abraham les accompagna pour les reconduire.
Then the men left. They looked down on Sodom and headed in that direction. Abraham accompanied them part of the way.
17 Or, l’Éternel avait dit: "Tairai-je à Abraham ce que je veux faire?"
Then the Lord said, “Should I keep from Abraham what I'm going to do?
18 Abraham ne doit-il pas devenir une nation grande et puissante et une cause de bonheur pour toutes les nations de la terre?
Abraham will definitely become a great and powerful nation, and all the nations on earth will be blessed through him.
19 Si je l’ai distingué, c’est pour qu’il prescrive à ses fils et à sa maison après lui d’observer la voie de l’Éternel, en pratiquant la vertu et la justice; afin que l’Éternel accomplisse sur Abraham ce qu’il a déclaré à son égard."
I've chosen him so that he will teach his sons and their families to follow the way of the Lord by doing what is right and good, so that I, the Lord, can do for Abraham what I promised.”
20 L’Éternel dit: "Comme le décri de Sodome et de Gommorrhe est grand; comme leur perversité est excessive,
Then the Lord said, “There are many complaints made against Sodom and Gomorrah because they sin so blatantly.
21 je veux y descendre; je veux voir si, comme la plainte en est venue jusqu’à moi, ils se sont livrés aux derniers excès; si cela n’est pas, j’aviserai."
I ‘m going to see if these complaints that have reached me are completely true. I'll know if they're not.”
22 Les hommes quittèrent ce lieu et s’acheminèrent vers Sodome; Abraham était encore en présence du Seigneur.
The two men turned and went towards Sodom, but the Lord stayed there with Abraham.
23 Abraham s’avança et dit: "Anéantirais-tu, d’un même coup, l’innocent avec le coupable?
Abraham came to him and asked: “Are you really going to wipe out the good people along with the wicked?
24 Peut-être y a-t-il cinquante justes dans cette ville: les feras-tu périr aussi et ne pardonneras-tu pas à la contrée en faveur des cinquante justes qui s’y trouvent?
What if there are fifty good people in the town? Are you still going to wipe it out despite the fifty good people there?
25 Loin de toi d’agir ainsi, de frapper l’innocent avec le coupable, les traitant tous deux de même façon! Loin de toi! Celui qui juge toute la terre serait-il un juge inique?"
No, you can't do something like that! You can't kill the good with the wicked, otherwise you would be treating the good and the wicked in the same way. You can't do that! Isn't the Judge of all the earth going to do the right thing?”
26 Le Seigneur répondit: "Si je trouve à Sodome au sein de la ville, cinquante justes, je pardonnerai à toute la contrée à cause d’eux"
“If I find fifty good people in Sodom, I'll spare the whole town because of them,” the Lord replied.
27 Abraham reprit en disant: "De grâce! j’ai entrepris de parler à mon souverain, moi poussière et cendre!
“Since I've started, let me go on speaking to my Lord, even though I'm nothing but dust and ashes,” Abraham continued.
28 Peut-être à ces cinquante justes, en manquera-t-il cinq: détruirais-tu, pour cinq, une ville entière?" Il répondit: "Je ne sévirai point, si j’en trouve quarante-cinq"
“What if there are forty-five good people, just five less? Are you still going to wipe out the whole town just because there are five fewer people?” “I won't destroy it if I find forty-five,” the Lord replied.
29 Il insista encore, en lui disant: "Peut-être s’y en trouvera-t-il quarante?" II répondit: "Je m’abstiendrai à cause de ces quarante."
Abraham spoke up again and he asked the Lord, “What if only forty can be found?” “I won't do it for the sake of the forty,” the Lord replied.
30 Il dit: "De grâce, que mon Souverain ne s’irrite point de mes paroles! Peut-être s’en trouvera-t-il trente?" II répondit: "Je m’abstiendrai, si j’en trouve trente"
“My Lord, please don't get angry with me,” Abraham went on. “Let me ask this—what if only thirty were found?” “I won't do it if I find thirty,” the Lord replied.
31 II reprit: "De grâce, puisque j’ai osé parler à mon Souverain, peut-être s’en trouvera-t-il vingt?" II répondit: "Je renoncerai à détruire, en faveur de ces vingt." II dit:
“I admit I've been very bold to speak to my Lord like this,” Abraham said. “What if only twenty are found there?” “I won't do it for the sake of the twenty,” the Lord replied.
32 "De grâce, que mon Souverain ne s’irrite pas, je ne parlerai plus que cette fois. Peut-être s’en trouvera-t-il dix?" II répondit: "Je renoncerai à détruire, en faveur de ces dix."
“Please don't get angry with me, my Lord,” Abraham said. “Just let me ask one more thing. What if only ten are found there?” “I won't destroy it for the sake of the ten,” the Lord replied.
33 Le Seigneur disparut, lorsqu’il eut achevé de parler à Abraham; et Abraham retourna à sa demeure.
The Lord left once he had finished speaking with Abraham, and Abraham went home.
