Genèse 15
1 Après ces faits, la parole du Seigneur se fit entendre à Abram, dans une vision, en ces termes: "Ne crains point, Abram: je suis un bouclier pour toi; ta récompense sera très grande"
After these things, came the word of Yahweh unto Abram, in a vision saying, —Do not fear Abram, I am a shield to thee, thine exceeding great reward.
2 Abram répondit: "Dieu-Éternel, que me donnerais-tu, alors que je m’en vais sans postérité et que le fils adoptif de ma maison est un Damascénien, Eliézer?"
And Abram said My Lord Yahweh, what canst thou give me, when, I, am going on childless, —and the heir of my house, is Eliezer, of Damascus,
3 "Certes, disait Abram, tu ne m’as pas donné de postérité, et l’enfant de ma maison sera mon héritier."
And Abram said—Lo, to me, hast thou not given seed, —And lo! a son of my household, is mine heir!
4 Mais voici que la parole de l’Éternel vint à lui, disant: "Celui-ci n’héritera pas de toi; c’est bien un homme issu de tes entrailles qui sera ton héritier."
And lo! the word of Yahweh [came] unto him, saying, This one, shall not be thine heir: But one who cometh forth of thy body—he shall be thine heir.
5 Il le fit sortir en plein air, et dit: "Regarde le ciel et compte les étoiles: peux-tu en supputer le nombre? Ainsi reprit-il, sera ta descendance."
And he brought him forth abroad and said—Look steadfastly. I pray thee towards the heavens, and number the stars, if thou be able to number, them, And he said to him, Thus, shall be thy seed.
6 Et il eut foi en l’Éternel, et l’Éternel lui en fit un mérite.
And he had faith in Yahweh, —so he reckoned it to him as righteousness.
7 Et il lui dit: "Je suis l’Éternel, qui t’ai tiré d’Our-Kasdim, pour te donner ce pays en possession."
And he said unto him, —I, am Yahweh, who brought thee forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.
8 Il répondit: "Dieu-Éternel, comment saurai-je que j’en suis possesseur?"
And he said, My Lord Yahweh, whereby, can I know that I shall inherit it?
9 Il lui dit: "Prépare-moi une génisse âgée de trois ans, une chèvre de trois ans, un bélier de trois ans, une tourterelle et une jeune colombe."
And he said unto him, Take for me a heifer three years old, and a she-goat three years old, and a ram three years old, and a turtle-dove and a young pigeon.
10 Abram prit tous ces animaux, divisa chacun par le milieu, et disposa chaque moitié en regard de l’autre; mais il ne divisa point les oiseaux.
So he took for him all these, and divided them, in the midst, and placed each piece over against its fellow, but the birds, divided he not.
11 Les oiseaux de proie s’abattirent sur les corps; Abram les mit en fuite.
Then came down the birds of prey upon the carcass, and Abram drove them away.
12 Le soleil étant sur son déclin, une torpeur s’empara d’Abram: tandis qu’une angoisse sombre profonde pesait sur lui.
And it came to pass when, the sun, was about to go in, and, a deep sleep, had fallen upon Abram, lo! a terror a great darkness, was falling upon him.
13 Dieu dit à Abram: "Sache-le bien, ta postérité séjournera sur une terre étrangère, où elle sera asservie et opprimée, durant quatre cents ans.
And he said to Abram—Thou must surely know, that, sojourners, will thy seed become in a land not theirs, and shall serve them and they will humble them, four hundred years;
14 Mais, à son tour, la nation qu’ils serviront sera jugée par moi; et alors ils la quitteront avec de grandes richesses.
moreover also, the nation whom they will serve, I, am going to judge, and after that, shall they come forth with great substance.
15 Pour toi, tu rejoindras paisiblement tes pères; tu seras enterré après une vieillesse heureuse.
But, thou, shalt go in unto thy fathers in peace, thou shalt be buried in a good old age.
16 Mais la quatrième génération reviendra ici, parce qu’alors seulement la perversité de l’Amorréen sera complète."
And, in the fourth generation, shall they return hither, —for not complete, is the iniquity of the Amorites, as yet,
17 Cependant le soleil s’était couché, et l’obscurité régnait: voici qu’un tourbillon de fumée et un sillon de feu passèrent entre ces chairs dépecées.
So it came to pass when, the sun, had gone in, and, a thick darkness, had come on, that lo there was a smoking hearth and torch of fire, which passed through between these pieces.
18 Ce jour-là, l’Éternel conclut avec Abram un pacte, en disant: "J’Ai octroyé à ta race ce territoire, depuis le torrent d’Egypte jusqu’au grand fleuve, le fleuve d’Euphrate:
In that day, did Yahweh solemnise with Abram a covenant, saying, —To thy seed, have I given this land, from the river of Egypt as far as the great river—the river Euphrates:
19 le Kénéen, le Kenizzéen, le Kadmonéen;
the Kenite, and the Kenizzite, and the Kadmonite;
20 le Héthéen, le Phérézéen, les Rephaim;
and the Hittite and the Perizzite, and the Rephaim;
21 l’Amorréen, le Cananéen, le Ghirgachéen et le Jébuséeen."
and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Girgashite, and the Jebusite.
