Genèse 14

1 Ceci arriva du temps d’Amrafel, roi de Sennaar; d’Aryoc, roi d’Ellasar; de Kedorlaomer, roi d’Elam, et de Tidal, roi de Goyim:

In those days Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim

2 ils firent la guerre à Béra, roi de Sodome; à Bircha, roi de Gommorrhe; à Chinab, roi d’Adma; à Chémêber, roi de Ceboïm, et au roi de Béla, la même que Çoar.

went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).

3 Tous ceux-là se réunirent dans la vallée des Siddim, qui est devenue la mer du Sel.

The latter five came as allies to the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea ).

4 Douze années, ils avaient été asservis à Kedorlaomer, et la treizième année ils s’étaient révoltés.

For twelve years they had been subject to Chedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

5 La quatorzième année, Kedorlaomer s’avança avec les rois ses alliés, et ils défirent les Refaïm à Achteroth-Karnayim, les Zouzim à Ham, les Emim à Chavé-Kiryathayim;

In the fourteenth year, Chedorlaomer and the kings allied with him went out and defeated the Rephaites in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites in Shaveh-kiriathaim,

6 et les Horéens dans leur montagne de Séir, jusqu’à la plaine de Pharan qui borde le désert.

and the Horites in the area of Mount Seir, as far as El-paran, which is near the desert.

7 Ils revinrent marchèrent sur Enmichpat, la même que Cadès, et dévastèrent tout le territoire de l’Amalécite et aussi de l’Amoréen établi à Haçaçon-Tamar.

Then they turned back to invade En-mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and they conquered the whole territory of the Amalekites, as well as the Amorites who lived in Hazazon-tamar.

8 Alors s’avancèrent le roi de Sodome, le roi de Gommorrhe, celui d’Adma, celui de Ceboim et celui de Béla ou Coar, ils se rangèrent contre eux en bataille dans la vallée des Siddim:

Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) marched out and arrayed themselves for battle in the Valley of Siddim

9 contre Kedorlaomer, roi d’Elam; Tidal, roi de Goyim; Amrafel, roi de Sennaar, et Aryoc, roi d’Ellasar: quatre rois contre cinq.

against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five.

10 La vallée des Siddim était remplie de puits de bitume: le roi de Sodome et celui de Gomorrhe s’enfuirent et y tombèrent; les autres se réfugièrent vers les montagnes.

Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some men fell into the pits, but the survivors fled to the hill country.

11 Les vainqueurs s’emparèrent de toutes les richesses de Sodome et de Gommorrhe et de tous leurs vivres, puis se retirèrent.

The four kings seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food, and they went on their way.

12 Ils prirent aussi, avec ses biens, Loth, neveu d’Abram, qui était alors à Sodome, et se retirèrent.

They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot and his possessions, since Lot was living in Sodom.

13 Les fuyards vinrent en apporter la nouvelle à Abram l’Hébreu. Celui-ci demeurait dans les plaines de Mamré l’Amorréen, frère d’Echkol et d’Aner, lesquels étaient les alliés d’Abram.

Then an escapee came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew. Now Abram was living near the Oaks of Mamre the Amorite, a brother of Eshcol and Aner, all of whom were bound by treaty to Abram.

14 Abram, ayant appris que son parent était prisonnier, arma ses fidèles, enfants de sa maison, trois cent dix huit, et suivit la trace des ennemis jusqu’à Dan.

And when Abram heard that his relative had been captured, he mobilized the 318 trained men born in his household, and they set out in pursuit as far as Dan.

15 Il se glissa sur eux la nuit avec ses serviteurs, les battit et les poursuivit jusqu’à Hoba, qui est à gauche de Damas.

During the night, Abram divided his forces and routed Chedorlaomer’s army, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.

16 Il reprit tout le butin, ramena aussi Loth son parent, avec ses biens, et les femmes et la multitude.

He retrieved all the goods, as well as his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the rest of the people.

17 Le roi de Sodome sortit à sa rencontre, comme il revenait de défaire Kedorlaomer et les rois ses auxiliaires, vers la vallée de Chavé, qui est la vallée Royale.

After Abram returned from defeating Chedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).

18 Melchisédec, roi de Salem, apporta du pain et du vin: il était prêtre du Dieu suprême.

Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine—since he was priest of God Most High —

19 Il le bénit, en disant: "Béni soit Abram de par le Dieu suprême, auteur des cieux et de la terre!

and he blessed Abram and said: “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,

20 Et béni le Dieu suprême d’avoir livré tes ennemis en ta main!" Et Abram lui donna la dîme de tout le butin.

and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything.

21 Le roi de Sodome dit à Abram: "Donne-moi les personnes, et les biens garde-les pour toi.

The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people, but take the goods for yourself.”

22 Abram répondit au roi de Sodome: "Je lève la main devant l’Éternel, qui est le Dieu suprême, auteur des cieux et de la terre;

But Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the LORD God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,

23 et je jure que fût-ce un fil, fût-ce la courroie d’une sandale, je ne prendrai rien de ce qui est à toi; que tu ne dises pas: "C’Est moi qui ai enrichi Abram!

that I will not accept even a thread, or a strap of a sandal, or anything that belongs to you, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’

24 Loin de moi! Si ce n’est ce qu’ont déjà mangé ces jeunes gens, et la part des hommes qui m’ont accompagné; Aner, Echkol et Mamré, que ceux-là prennent leurs parts."

I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share for the men who went with me—Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre. They may take their portion.”
