Exode 33

1 L’Éternel dit à Moïse: "Va, pars d’ici avec le peuple que tu as conduit hors du pays d’Égypte et allez au pays que j’ai promis par serment à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob, disant: ‘Je le donnerai à votre postérité.’

Then spake Yahweh unto Moses—Get thee away, go up from hence, thou, and the people whom thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, —into the land of which I sware to Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob, saying, To thy seed, will I give it;

2 J’Enverrai devant toi un ange, par lequel j’expulserai le Cananéen, l’Amorréen, le Héthéen, le Phérézéen, le Hévéen et le Jébuséen.

And I will send before thee a messenger, -and will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite;

3 Vers ce pays ruisselant de lait et de miel, non, je ne monterai point au milieu de toi, peuple réfractaire que tu es, car je pourrais t’anéantir pendant le voyage."

into a land flowing with milk and honey, —for I will not go up in thy midst in that a stiff-necked people, thou art, lest I consume thee in the way.

4 Le peuple, ayant eu connaissance de cette fâcheuse parole, prit le deuil et nul ne se para de ses ornements.

And when the people heard these evil tidings, they afflicted themselves, —and they put not, any man, his ornaments upon him.

5 L’Éternel dit à Moïse: "Dis aux enfants d’Israël: ‘Vous êtes un peuple réfractaire; si un seul instant je m’avançais au milieu de vous, je vous anéantirais. Donc, déposez vos ornements et j’aviserai à ce que je dois vous faire.’"

Then said Yahweh unto Moses—Say unto the sons of Israel, Ye, are a stiff-necked people, in one moment—if I should go up in thy midst, should I make an end of thee, —Now, therefore lay down thine ornaments from off thee, that I may see what I must do with thee.

6 Les enfants—d’Israël renoncèrent à leur parure, à dater du mont Horeb.

So then the sons of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, [and moved on] from Mount Horeb.

7 Pour Moïse, il prit sa tente pour la dresser hors du camp, loin de son enceinte et il la nomma Tente d’assignation; de sorte que tout homme ayant à consulter le Seigneur devait se rendre à la Tente d’assignation, située hors du camp.

And, Moses, proceeded to take a tent, and pitch it by itself outside the camp, afar off from the camp, and he called it, The Tent of Meeting, —and so it came to pass that whosoever was seeking Yahweh went out unto the tent of meeting, which was on the outside of the camp.

8 Et chaque fois que Moïse se retirait vers la Tente, tout le peuple se levait, chacun se tenait au seuil de sa propre tente et suivait Moïse du regard jusqu’à ce qu’il fût arrivé à la Tente.

And it came about, that, when Moses went out unto the tent, all the people used to rise up, and station themselves every man at the opening of his tent, —and they watched Moses, until he entered the tent.

9 Quand Moïse y était entré, la colonne de nuée descendait, s’arrêtait à l’entrée de la Tente et Dieu s’entretenait avec Moïse.

And it came to pass that when Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud came down, and stood at the opening of the tent, —and spake with Moses.

10 Et tout le peuple voyait la colonne nébuleuse arrêtée à l’entrée de la Tente et tout le peuple, aussitôt se prosternait, chacun devant sa tente.

And when all the people beheld the pillar of cloud, standing at the opening of the tent, then all the people rose up and bowed themselves down, every man at the entrance of his tent.

11 Or, l’Éternel s’entretenait avec Moïse face à face, comme un homme s’entretient avec un autre; puis Moïse retournait au camp. Mais Josué, fils de Noun, son jeune serviteur, ne quittait pas l’intérieur de la Tente.

Thus Yahweh used to speak unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend, —and when he returned unto the camp, his attendant Joshua son of Nun, a young man, moved not from the midst of the tent.

12 Moïse dit au Seigneur: "Considère que tu me dis: ‘Fais avancer ce peuple’, sans me faire savoir qui tu veux m’adjoindre. D’Ailleurs, tu avais dit: ‘Je t’ai distingué spécialement et certes tu as trouvé faveur à mes yeux.’

Then said Moses, unto Yahweh, See! thou art saying unto me—Take up this people, and yet thou hast no let me know whom thou wilt send with me, —though thou thyself, didst say—I acknowledge thee by name, Yea, moreover, thou hast found favour in mine eyes.

13 Eh bien! de grâce, si j’ai trouvé faveur à tes yeux, daigne me révéler tes voies, afin que je te connaisse et que je mérite encore ta bienveillance. Songe aussi que c’est ton peuple, cette nation!"

Now, therefore, if, I pray thee, I have found favour in thine eyes, let me know, I beseech thee, thy way, that I may acknowledge thee, to the intent I may find favour in thine eyes, —see thou, therefore, that this nation is thine own people.

14 Dieu répondit: "Ma face vous guidera et je te donnerai toute sécurité."

So then he said, —Mine own presence, shall go on thus will I give thee rest.

15 Moïse lui dit: "Si ta face ne nous guide, ne nous fais pas sortir d’ici.

And he said unto him, If thy presence is not going on, do not take us up from hence.

16 Et comment serait-il avéré que j’ai obtenu ta bienveillance, moi ainsi que ton peuple, sinon parce que tu marches avec nous? Nous serons ainsi distingués, moi et ton peuple, de tous les peuples qui sont sur la face de la terre."

Whereby, indeed, shall it be known then that I have found favour in thine eyes, I, and thy people? Shall it not be, by thy going on with us? So shall we be more distinguished, I, and thy people, than any people that are on the face of the ground.

17 L’Éternél dit à Moïse: "Cette chose-là même, que tu as demandée, je l’accorde, parce que tu as trouvé faveur à mes yeux et que je t’ai spécialement distingué."

Then said Yahweh unto Moses: Even this thing, which thou hast spoken, will I do—For thou hast found favour in mine eyes, And I have acknowledged thee by name.

18 Moïse reprit: "Découvre-moi donc ta Gloire."

And he said, —Show me, I pray thee, thy glory.

19 Il répondit: "C’Est ma bonté tout entière que je veux dérouler à ta vue, et, toi présent, je nommerai de son vrai nom l’Éternel; alors je ferai grâce à qui je devrai faire grâce et je serai miséricordieux pour qui je devrai l’être."

And he said, —I, will cause all my goodness to pass before thee. And will proclaim myself by the name Yahweh, before thee, And will show favour, unto whom I may show favour, And will have compassion on whom I may have compassion.

20 Il ajouta: "Tu ne saurais voir ma face; car nul homme ne peut me voir et vivre."

But he said—Thou canst not see my face, For no son of earth can see me, and live

21 Le Seigneur ajouta: "Il est une place près de moi: tu te tiendras sur le rocher;

And Yahweh, said, Lo! a place near me, —So then thou shalt station thyself upon the rock:

22 puis, quand passera ma gloire, je te cacherai dans la cavité du roc et je t’abriterai de ma main jusqu’à ce que je sois passé.

And it shall be while my glory passeth by, I will put thee in the cleft of the rock, —and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:

23 Alors je retirerai ma main et tu me verras par derrière; mais ma face ne peut être vue."

Then will I take away my hand, and thou shalt see behind me, But, my face, must not be seen.
