Exode 32
1 Le peuple, voyant que Moïse tardait à descendre de la montagne, s’attroupa autour d’Aaron et lui dit: "Allons! fais-nous un dieu qui marche à notre tête, puisque celui-ci, Moïse, l’homme qui nous a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, nous ne savons ce qu’il est devenu."
And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mount, the people assembled themselves together around Aaron, and they said unto him, Up, make us gods, that shall go before us; for of this man Moses, who hath brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him.
2 Aaron leur répondit: "Détachez les pendants d’or qui sont aux oreilles de vos femmes, de vos fils et de vos filles et me les apportez."
And Aaron said unto them, Take out the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.
3 Tous se dépouillèrent des pendants d’or qui étaient à leurs oreilles et les apportèrent à Aaron.
And all the people took out the golden earrings, which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.
4 Ayant reçu cet or de leurs mains, il le jeta en moule et en fit un veau de métal; et ils dirent: "Voilà tes dieux, ô Israël, qui t’ont fait sortir du pays d’Égypte!"
And he took them from their hand, and fashioned it in a mould, and he made of it a molten calf; and they said, These are thy gods, O Israel, that have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
5 Ce que voyant, Aaron érigea devant lui un autel et il proclama: "A demain une solennité pour l’Éternel!"
And when Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron called out, and said, A feast unto the Lord is tomorrow.
6 Ils s’empressèrent, dès le lendemain, d’offrir des holocaustes, d’amener des victimes rémunératoires; le peuple se mit à manger et à boire, puis se livra à des réjouissances.
And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt-offerings, and brought near peace-offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
7 Alors l’Éternel dit à Moïse: "Va, descends! car on a perverti ton peuple que tu as tiré du pays d’Égypte!
And the Lord spoke unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, hath become corrupt:
8 De bonne heure infidèles à la voie que je leur avais prescrite, ils se sont fait un veau de métal et ils se sont courbés devant lui, ils lui ont sacrifié, ils ont dit: ‘Voilà tes dieux, Israël, qui t’ont fait sortir du pays d’Égypte!’"
They have turned aside quickly from the way which I have commanded them; they have made themselves a molten calf: and they have bowed themselves to it, and have sacrificed unto it, and have said, These are thy gods, O Israel, that have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
9 L’Éternel dit à Moïse: "Je vois que ce peuple est un peuple rétif.
And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people.
10 Donc, cesse de me solliciter, laisse s’allumer contre eux ma colère et que je les anéantisse, tandis que je ferai de toi un grand peuple!"
And now let me alone, and my wrath shall wax hot against them, and I will make an end of them; and I will make of thee a great nation.
11 Mais Moïse implora l’Éternel son Dieu, en disant:
Thereupon Moses besought the Lord his God, and said, Why, O Lord, shall thy wrath wax hot against thy people, that thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt, with great power and with a mighty hand?
12 "Pourquoi, Seigneur, ton courroux menace-t-il ton peuple, que tu as tiré du pays d’Égypte avec une si grande force et d’une main si, puissante? Faut-il que les Égyptiens disent: ‘C’Est pour leur malheur qu’il les a emmenés, pour les faire périr dans les montagnes et les anéantir de dessus la face de la terre!’ Reviens de ton irritation et révoque la calamité qui menace ton peuple.
Wherefore should the Egyptians say thus, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to destroy them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent thee of the evil decreed against thy people.
13 Souviens-toi d’Abraham, d’Isaac et d’Israël, tes serviteurs, à qui tu as juré par toi-même leur disant: Je ferai votre postérité aussi nombreuse que les étoiles du ciel; et tout ce pays que j’ai désigné, je le donnerai à votre postérité, qui le possédera pour jamais!"
Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou didst swear by thy own self, and speak unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven; and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.
14 L’Éternel révoqua le malheur qu’il avait voulu, infliger à son peuple.
And the Lord bethought himself of the evil which he had spoken to do unto his people.
15 Moïse redescendit de la montagne, les deux tables du Statut à la main, tables écrites sur leurs deux faces, d’un côté et de l’autre.
And Moses turned about, and went down from the mount with the two tables of the testimony in his hand: tables inscribed on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they inscribed.
16 Et ces tables étaient l’ouvrage de Dieu; et ces caractères, gravés sur les tables, étaient des caractères divins.
And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved upon the tables.
17 Josué, entendant la clameur jubilante du peuple, dit à Moïse: "Des cris de guerre au camp!"
And Joshua heard the noise of the people in its shouting, and he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.
18 Moïse répondit: "Ce n’est point le bruit d’un chant de victoire, ce n’est point le cri annonçant une défaite; c’est une clameur affligeante que j’entends!"
And he said, It is not the voice of a shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of a cry for defeat; the noise of singing do I hear.
19 Or, comme il approchait du camp, il aperçut le veau et les danses. Le courroux de Moïse s’alluma; il jeta de ses mains les tables et les brisa au pied de la montagne.
And it came to pass, when he came nigh unto the camp, and he saw the calf, and the dancing: that the anger of Moses waxed hot, and he cast from his hands the tables, and broke them at the foot of the mount.
20 Puis il prit le veau qu’on avait fabriqué, le calcina par le feu, le réduisit en menue poussière qu’il répandit sur l’eau et qu’il fit boire aux enfants d’Israël.
And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in fire, and ground it to a powder, and he strewed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.
21 Moïse dit à Aaron: "Que t’avait fait ce peuple, pour que tu l’aies induit à une telle prévarication?"
And Moses said unto Aaron, What hath this people done unto thee, that thou hast brought upon it so great a sin?
22 Aaron répondit: "Que mon seigneur ne se courrouce point; toi-même tu sais combien ce peuple est prompt au mal.
And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my Lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that it is bent on mischief.
23 Ils m’ont dit: ‘Fabrique-nous un dieu qui marche à notre tête, puisque celui-ci, Moïse, l’homme qui nous a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, nous ne savons ce qu’il est devenu.’
And they said unto me, Make us gods that shall go before us; for of this man Moses, who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we know not what hath become of him.
24 Je leur ai répondu: ‘Qui a de l’or?’ et ils s’en sont dépouillés et me l’ont livré; je l’ai jeté au feu et ce veau en est sorti."
And I said unto them, Who hath any gold? They took it off themselves and gave it to me, and I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.
25 Moïse vit que le peuple était livré au désordre; qu’Aaron l’y avait abandonné, le dégradant ainsi devant ses ennemis
And Moses saw the people that it had become unruly; for Aaron had made it unruly for a disgrace among their opponents.
26 et Moïse se posta à la porte du camp et il dit: "Qui aime l’Éternel me suive!" Et tous les Lévites se groupèrent autour de lui.
Moses then placed himself in the gate of the camp, and said, Whoever is on the Lord's side, let him come unto me! and there assembled themselves unto him all the sons of Levi.
27 Il leur dit: "Ainsi a parlé l’Éternel, Dieu d’Israël: ‘Que chacun de vous s’arme de son glaive! passez, repassez d’une porte à l’autre dans le camp et immolez, au besoin, chacun son frère, son ami, son parent!’
And he said unto them, Thus hath said the Eternal, the God of Israel, Put ye every man his sword by his side, and go ye hither and thither, from gate to gate in the camp, and slay ye every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his relative.
28 Les enfants de Lévi se conformèrent à l’ordre de Moïse; et il périt dans le peuple, ce jour-là, environ trois mille hommes.
And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people on that day about three thousand men.
29 Moïse dit: "Consacrez-vous dès aujourd’hui à l’Éternel, parce que chacun l’a vengé sur son fils, sur son frère et que ce jour vous a mérité sa bénédiction."
And Moses said, Consecrate yourselves today to the Lord, yea even every man on his son, and on his brother; and to bestow upon you this day a blessing.
30 Puis le lendemain, Moïse dit au peuple: "Pour vous, vous avez commis un grand péché! Et maintenant, je vais monter vers le Seigneur, peut-être obtiendrai-je grâce pour votre péché."
And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the Lord; peradventure I may obtain an atonement for your sin.
31 Moïse retourna vers le Seigneur et dit: "Hélas! Ce peuple est coupable d’un grand péché, ils se sont fait un dieu d’or;
And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Oh, this people hath sinned a great sin, and they have made themselves gods of gold.
32 et pourtant, si tu voulais pardonner à leur faute!… Sinon efface-moi du livre que tu as écrit."
Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin—; but if not, blot me out, I pray thee, from thy book which thou hast written.
33 Le Seigneur répondit à Moïse: "Celui qui a prévariqué envers moi, c’est lui que j’effacerai de mon livre.
And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out from my book.
34 Et maintenant va, conduis ce peuple où je t’ai dit; mon envoyé te précédera. Mais le jour où j’aurai à sévir, je leur demanderai compte de ce péché."
And now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee; behold, my angel shall go before thee; but on the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.
35 Ainsi l’Éternel châtia le peuple, comme auteur du veau qu’avait fabriqué Aaron.
And the Lord sent a plague among the people, because that they had made the calf which Aaron made.
