Exode 17
1 Toute la communauté des enfants d’Israël partit du désert de Sîn pour diverses stations, sur l’ordre du Seigneur. Ils campèrent à Refidîm, où il n’y avait point d’eau à boire pour le peuple.
And all the congregation of the children of Israel departed from the wilderness of Sin, according to their encampments, by the word of the Lord; and they encamped in Raphidin: and there was no water for the people to drink.
2 Le peuple querella Moïse, en disant: "Donnez-nous de l’eau, que nous buvions!" Moïse leur répondit: "Pourquoi me cherchez-vous querelle? pourquoi tentez-vous le Seigneur?"
And the people reviled Moses, saying, Give us water, that we may drink; and Moses said to them, Why do you revile me, and why tempt you the Lord?
3 Alors, pressé par la soif, le peuple murmura contre Moïse et dit: "Pourquoi nous as-tu fait sortir de l’Égypte, pour faire mourir de soif moi, mes enfants et mes troupeaux?"
And the people thirsted there for water, and there the people murmured against Moses, saying, Why is this? have you brought us up out of Egypt to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?
4 Moïse se plaignit au Seigneur, en disant: "Que ferai-je pour ce peuple? Peu s’en faut qu’ils ne me lapident"
And Moses cried to the Lord, saying, What shall I do to this people? yet a little while and they will stone me.
5 Le Seigneur répondit à Moïse: "Avanc-toi à la tête du peuple, accompagné de quelques-uns des anciens d’Israël; cette verge, dont tu as frappé le fleuve, prends-la en main et marche.
And the Lord said to Moses, Go before this people, and take to yourself of the elders of the people; and the rod with which you struck the river, take in your hand, and you shall go.
6 Je vais t’apparaître là-bas sur le rocher, au mont Horeb; tu frapperas ce rocher et il en jaillira de l’eau et le peuple boira." Ainsi fit Moïse, à la vue des anciens d’Israël.
Behold, I stand there before you [come], on the rock in Choreb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out from it, and the people shall drink. And Moses did so before the sons of Israel.
7 On appela ce lieu Massa et Meriba, à cause de la querelle des enfants d’Israël et parce qu’ils avaient tenté l’Éternel en disant: "Nous verrons si l’Éternel est avec nous ou non!"
And he called the name of that place, Temptation, and Reviling, because of the reviling of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, Is the Lord amongst us or not?
8 Amalec survint et attaqua Israël à Refidim.
And Amalec came and fought with Israel in Raphidin.
9 Moïse dit à Josué: "Choisis des hommes et va livrer bataille à Amalec; demain, je me tiendrai au sommet de cette colline, la verge divine à la main."
And Moses said to Joshua, Choose out for yourself mighty men, and go forth and set the army in array against Amalec to-morrow; and, behold, I [shall] stand on the top of the hill, and the rod of God [will be] in my hand.
10 Josué exécuta ce que lui avait dit Moïse, en livrant bataille à Amalec, tandis que Moïse, Aaron et Hour montèrent au haut de la colline.
And Joshua did as Moses said to him, and he went out and set the army in array against Amalec, and Moses and Aaron and Or went up to the top of the hill.
11 Or, tant que Moïse tenait son bras levé, Israël avait le dessus; lorsqu’il le laissait fléchir, c’est Amalec qui l’emportait.
And it came to pass, when Moses lifted up his hands, Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hands, Amalec prevailed.
12 Les bras de Moïse s’appesantissant, ils prirent une pierre qu’ils mirent sous lui et il s’assit dessus; Aaron et Hour soutinrent ses bras, l’un de çà, l’autre de là et ses bras restèrent fermes jusqu’au coucher du soleil.
But the hands of Moses were heavy, and they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat upon it; and Aaron and Or supported his hands one on this side and the other on that, and the hands of Moses were supported till the going down of the sun.
13 Josué triompha d’Amalec et de son peuple, à la pointe de l’épée.
And Joshua routed Amalec and all his people with the slaughter of the sword.
14 L’Éternel dit à Moïse: "Consigne ceci, comme souvenir, dans le Livre et inculque-le à Josué: ‘que je veux effacer la trace d’Amalec de dessous les cieux.’"
And the Lord said to Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and speak [this] in the ears of Joshua; for I will utterly blot out the memorial of Amalec from under heaven.
15 Moïse érigea un autel, qu’il nomma: "Dieu est ma bannière."
And Moses built an altar to the Lord, and called the name of it, The Lord my Refuge.
16 Et il dit: "Puisque sa main s’attaque au trône de l’Éternel, guerre à Amalec de par l’Éternel, de siècle en siècle!"
For with a secret hand the Lord wages war upon Amalec to all generations.
