Esther 8

1 Le même jour, le roi Assuérus fit don à la reine Esther de la maison d’Aman, persécuteur des juifs, et Mardochée se présenta devant le roi, Esther ayant raconté ce qu’il était pour elle.

At that time King Ahasuerus gave the property of Haman the Jews’ enemy to Queen Esther. Mordecai was made one of the king’s personal advisers, for Esther had disclosed his relationship to her.

2 Le roi ôta son anneau, qu’il avait fait enlever à Aman, et le remit à Mardochée; et Esther préposa Mardochée à la maison d’Aman.

The king also drew off his signet ring, which he had taken from Haman. He gave it to Mordecai, and Esther placed Mordecai in charge of Haman’s property.

3 Puis Esther revint à la charge pour parler au roi; elle se jeta à ses pieds et, en pleurant, le supplia d’annuler le funeste dessein d’Aman, l’Agaghite, et le projet qu’il avait formé contre les juifs.

Then Esther sought another audience with the king and fell at his feet and with tears begged him to avert the evil planned by Haman the Agagite and to frustrate his designs against the Jews.

4 Le roi tendit le sceptre d’or à Esther, qui, s’étant relevée, se tint debout devant le roi,

The king held out to her the golden sceptre, and she arose and stood before him.

5 et dit: "Si tel est le bon plaisir du roi et si j’ai trouvé grâce devant lui, si la chose paraît convenable au roi et s’il a quelque bienveillance pour moi, qu’on écrive à l’effet de révoquer les lettres, transmettant la pensée d’Aman, fils de Hamedata, l’Agaghite, qui a écrit de perdre les juifs établis dans toutes les provinces du roi;

“If it seems best to the king,” she said, “and if I have won his favor and he thinks it right, and if I please him, let written orders be given to revoke the dispatches devised by Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote ordering the destruction of the Jews who are in all the king’s provinces.

6 car comment pourrais-je être témoin de la calamité qui atteindrait mon peuple, et comment pourrais-je être témoin de la ruine de ma race?"

For how can I bear to look upon the evil that will come to my people? How can I bear to see their destruction?”

7 Le roi Assuérus dit à Ia reine Esther et au juif Mardochée: "Déjà j’ai fait don à Esther de la maison d’Aman; lui-même, on l’a pendu à la potence, pour avoir dirigé un attentat contre les juifs;

Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, “See, I have given Esther the property of Haman, and they have hanged him on the gallows, because he laid hands upon the Jews.

8 eh bien! écrivez vous-mêmes, au nom du roi, en faveur des juifs, comme vous le jugerez bon, et signez avec l’anneau royal, car un ordre écrit au nom du roi et muni du sceau royal ne peut être rapporté."

Now you write on behalf of the Jews, as seems best to you, in the king’s name and seal it with the king’s signet ring. For a document that is written in the king’s name and sealed with the king’s signet ring cannot be revoked.”

9 Sur l’heure même, on convoqua les secrétaires du roi, c’était dans le troisième mois, qui est le mois de Sivan, le vingt-troisième jour du mois et on écrivit, tout comme Mardochée l’ordonna, aux juifs, aux satrapes, aux gouverneurs et aux préfets des provinces qui s’étendaient de l’Inde à l’Ethiopie cent-vingt-sept provinces en s’adressant à chaque province suivant son système d’écriture et à chaque peuple suivant son idiome, de même aux juifs selon leur écriture et selon leur langue.

On the twenty-third day of the third month (that is the month of Sivan), the king’s secretaries were summoned and as Mordecai instructed an edict was issued to the Jews, to the satraps and provincial governors and the rulers of each of the one hundred twenty-seven provinces from India to Ethiopia in their own script and their own language, and to the Jews in their own script and language.

10 Il fit écrire au nom du roi Assuérus et sceller avec l’anneau du roi; puis il expédia les lettres par des courriers à cheval, montés sur des coursiers rapides, appartenant au service de l’Etat et élevés dans les écuries royales.

Mordecai wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus. He sealed it with the king’s signet ring. Dispatches were sent by mounted couriers who rode the swift, noble steeds, bred of the royal studs.

11 Il déclarait que le roi autorisait les juifs, dans chaque ville, à se rassembler et à défendre leur vie, en exterminant, en tuant et en détruisant tout attroupement de populace qui les attaquerait, y compris les femmes et les enfants, et à faire main basse sur leur butin;

In this way the king permitted the Jews who were in every city to gather together and make a stand for their life, to destroy, to kill, and annihilate all the armed forces of any people or province that might be hostile to them, including their children and women, and to take their goods as plunder

12 et cela en un seul et même jour, dans toutes les provinces du roi Assuérus, à savoir le treizième jour du douzième mois, qui est le mois d’Adar.

throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus on that thirteenth day of the twelfth month (which is called Adar).

13 La teneur de l’écrit portait qu’un édit fût promulgué dans chaque province et porté à la connaissance de tous les peuples pour que les juifs se tinssent prêts, pour ce jour, à se venger de leurs ennemis.

A copy of the edict was to be published as a decree in every province – publicly displayed so that the Jews might be ready for that day and avenge themselves.

14 Les courriers, montés sur des coursiers rapides, appartenant au service de l’Etat, partirent sur l’ordre du roi, en toute diligence et avec précipitation, et l’édit fut publié dans Suse, la capitale.

So the couriers who rode the swift, noble steeds went out, hastened and impelled by the king’s commands! Meantime the decree had been given out in the royal palace at Susa;

15 Cependant Mardochée sortit de chez le roi en costume royal, bleu d’azur et blanc, avec une grande couronne d’or et un manteau de byssus et de pourpre, et la ville de Suse fut dans la jubilation et dans la joie.

and Mordecai had gone out from the presence of the king in royal garments of violet and white and with a great crown of gold and with a robe of fine linen and purple. The people of Susa shouted and were glad.

16 Pour les juifs, ce n’étaient que joie rayonnante, contentement, allégresse et marques d’honneur.

To the Jews there came light and gladness and joy and honor.

17 Dans chaque province, dans chaque ville, partout où parvinrent l’ordre du roi et son édit, il y avait pour les juifs joie et allégresse, festins et jour de fête. Un grand nombre parmi les gens du pays se firent juifs, tant la crainte des juifs s’était emparée d’eux.

And in every province and city, wherever the king’s command and decree came, there was gladness and joy among the Jews and a holiday. Many of the peoples of the earth professed to be Jews, for fear of the Jews took possession of them.
