Esther 5

1 Le troisième jour, Esther se revêtit de ses atours de reine et se présenta dans la cour intérieure du palais du roi, en face du palais du roi. Celui-ci était assis sur son trône royal, dans le palais de la royauté, vis-à-vis de l’entrée du palais.

Now it came to pass on the third day, that Esther put on [her] royal [apparel], and stood in the inner court of the king’s house, over against the king’s house: and the king sat upon his royal throne in the royal house, over against the gate of the house.

2 Lorsque le roi aperçut Esther debout dans la cour, elle éveilla sa sympathie, et le roi tendit à Esther le sceptre d’or qu’il tenait en main. Esther s’avança et toucha l’extrémité du sceptre.

And it was so, when the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, [that] she obtained favour in his sight: and the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre that [was] in his hand. So Esther drew near, and touched the top of the sceptre.

3 Le roi lui dit: "Qu’y a-t-il, reine Esther? Que demandes-tu? Quand ce serait la moitié du royaume, elle te serait accordée."

And the king said, What will you, Esther? and what is your request? [ask] even to the half of my kingdom, and it shall be yours.

4 Esther répondit: "Si tel est le bon plaisir du roi, que le roi, ainsi qu’Aman, assiste aujourd’hui au festin que j’ai préparé à son intention."

And Esther said, To-day is my great day: if then it seem good to the king, let both him and Aman come to the feast which I will prepare this day.

5 Le roi dit: "Cherchez vite Aman, pour que s’accomplisse le désir d’Esther." Et le roi se rendit avec Aman au festin préparé par Esther.

And the king said, Hasten Aman hither, that we may perform the word of Esther. So they both come to the feast of which Esther had spoken.

6 Au cours du festin, le roi dit à Esther: "Formule ta demande, et elle te sera accordée; dis ce que tu souhaites: quand ce serait la moitié du royaume, tu l’obtiendrais."

And at the banquet the king said to Esther, What is [your request], queen Esther? [speak], and you shall have all that you require.

7 Esther répliqua et dit: "Ma demande et ma requête, les voici:

And she said, My request and my petition [are]:

8 si j’ai trouvé grâce aux yeux du roi et s’il plaît au roi d’agréer ma demande et d’accéder à ma requête, que le roi veuille se rendre avec Aman au festin que je veux leur préparer, et demain je me conformerai à la volonté du roi."

if I have found favor in the sight of the king, let the king and Aman come again to-morrow to the feast which I shall prepare for them, and to-morrow I will do the same.

9 Ce jour-là Aman se retira, joyeux et le cœur content mais quand Aman vit, à la porte du roi, Mardochée qui ne se levait ni ne bougeait devant lui, il fut rempli de colère contre Mardochée.

So Aman went out from the king very glad [and] merry: but when Aman saw Mardochaeus the Jew in the court, he was greatly enraged.

10 Toutefois Aman se contint et rentra chez lui; aussitôt il fit venir ses amis et sa femme Zérech.

And having gone into his own house, he called his friends, and his wife Zosara.

11 Aman leur exposa la splendeur de sa fortune et la multitude de ses enfants, et comment le roi l’avait distingué et élevé au-dessus des grands et des officiers royaux;

And he showed them his wealth, and the glory with which the king had invested him, and how he had caused him to take precedence and bear chief rule in the kingdom.

12 et Aman ajouta: "Bien plus, je suis le seul que la reine Esther ait invité avec le roi au festin qu’elle a préparé; et demain encore je suis convié par elle avec le roi.

And Aman said, The queen has called no one to the feast with the king but me, and I am invited to-morrow.

13 Mais tout cela est sans prix à mes yeux, tant que je vois ce juif Mardochée assis à la porte du roi."

But these things please me not, while I see Mardochaeus the Jew in the court.

14 Sa femme Zérech et tous ses amis lui répondirent: "Qu’on dresse une potence, haute de cinquante coudées; et demain matin parle au roi; pour qu’on y pende Mardochée. Alors tu iras joyeusement avec le roi au festin." Le conseil plut à Aman, et il fit dresser la potence.

And Zosara his wife and his friends said to him, Let there be a gallows made for you of fifty cubits, and in the morning do you speak to the king, and let Mardochaeus be hanged on the gallows: but do you go in to the feast with the king, and be merry. And the saying pleased Aman, and the gallows was prepared.
