Esther 4

1 Or, Mardochée, ayant eu connaissance de tout ce qui s’était passé, déchira ses vêtements, se couvrit d’un cilice et de cendres et parcourut la ville en poussant des cris véhéments et amers.

When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;

2 Il arriva jusqu’aux abords de la porte du roi; car il ne pouvait s’approcher de la porte du roi revêtu d’un cilice.

And came even before the king’s gate: for none [might] enter into the king’s gate clothed with sackcloth.

3 Et dans chacune des provinces, partout où parvinrent l’ordre du roi et son édit, ce fut un grand deuil pour les juifs, accompagné de jeûnes, de pleurs et de lamentations; la plupart s’étendirent sur un cilice et sur des cendres.

And in every province, whithersoever the king’s commandment and his decree came, [there was] great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

4 Les suivantes d’Esther et ses eunuques vinrent lui raconter la chose, et la reine en fut toute bouleversée. Elle envoya des vêtements pour les mettre à Mardochée, en enlevant son cilice; mais il ne les accepta point.

So Esther’s maids and her chamberlains came and told [it] her. Then was the queen exceedingly grieved; and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away his sackcloth from him: but he received [it] not.

5 Alors Esther appela Hatac, un des eunuques du roi qu’on avait attaché à son service, et le dépêcha à Mardochée pour savoir ce que cela voulait dire et pourquoi cette manière d’agir.

Then called Esther for Hatach, [one] of the king’s chamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend upon her, and gave him a commandment to Mordecai, to know what it [was], and why it [was].

6 Hatac se rendit auprès de Mardochée, sur la place publique de la ville qui s’étendait devant la porte du roi;

So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city, which [was] before the king’s gate.

7 et Mardochée lui fit part de tout ce qui lui était advenu ainsi que du montant de la somme d’argent qu’Aman avait promis de verser dans les trésors du roi, en vue des juifs qu’il voulait faire périr.

And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.

8 Il lui remit aussi le texte de l’ordre écrit qui avait été promulgué à Suse de les exterminer, pour le montrer à Esther et la mettre au courant, et pour lui recommander de se rendre chez le roi, afin de lui présenter une supplique et de le solliciter en faveur de son peuple.

Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them, to shew [it] unto Esther, and to declare [it] unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him for her people.

9 Hatac revint et rapporta à Esther les paroles de Mardochée.

And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.

10 Mais Esther dit à Hatac, en le chargeant de transmettre sa réponse à Mardochée:

Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai;

11 "Tous les serviteurs du roi et la population des provinces du roi savent que toute personne, homme ou femme, qui pénètre chez le roi, dans la cour intérieure, sans avoir été convoquée, une loi égale pour tous la rend passible de la peine de mort; celui-là seul à qui le roi tend son sceptre d’or a la vie sauve. Or, moi, je n’ai pas été invitée à venir chez le roi voilà trente jours."

All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, [there is] one law of his to put [him] to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.

12 Les paroles d’Esther ayant été communiquées à Mardochée,

And they told to Mordecai Esther’s words.

13 celui-ci dit de porter cette réponse à Esther: "Ne te berce pas de l’illusion que, seule d’entre les juifs, tu échapperas au danger, grâce au palais du roi;

Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king’s house, more than all the Jews.

14 car si tu persistes à garder le silence à l’heure où nous sommes, la délivrance et le salut surgiront pour les juifs d’autre part, tandis que toi et la maison de ton père vous périrez. Et qui sait si ce n’est pas pour une conjoncture pareille que tu es parvenue à la royauté?"

For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, [then] shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for [such] a time as this?

15 Alors Esther fit porter cette réponse à Mardochée:

Then Esther bade [them] return Mordecai [this answer],

16 "Va rassembler tous les juifs présents à Suse, et jeûnez à mon intention; ne mangez ni ne buvez pendant trois jours ni jour ni nuit moi aussi avec mes suivantes, je jeûnerai de la même façon. Et puis je me présenterai au roi, et si je dois périr, je périrai!"

Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which [is] not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.

17 Mardochée se retira et exécuta strictement ce que lui avait ordonné Esther.

So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.
