Esther 2
1 Après ces événements, quand la colère du roi Assuérus fut tombée, il se souvint de Vasthi, de ce qu’elle avait fait et de la sentence prononcée contre elle.
After these things, when the wrath of King Ahashuerosh was appeased, he remembred Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.
2 Alors les courtisans du roi, attachés à son service, dirent: "Qu’on recherche pour le roi des jeunes filles vierges, belles de visage,
And the Kings seruants that ministred vnto him, sayd, Let them seeke for the King beautifull yong virgins,
3 et que le roi institue des fonctionnaires dans toutes les provinces de son royaume, chargés de rassembler toutes les jeunes filles vierges, d’un bel extérieur, à Suse, la capitale, dans le palais des femmes, sous la direction de Hêghé, eunuque du roi, gardien des femmes, pour que celui-ci leur fournisse les apprêts de leur toilette;
And let the King appoynt officers through all the prouinces of his kingdome, and let them gather all the beautiful yong virgins vnto the palace of Shushan, into the house of the women, vnder the hand of Hege the Kings eunuche, keeper of the women, to giue them their things for purification.
4 et la jeune fille qui plaira le plus au roi, qu’elle devienne reine à la place de Vasthi!" La chose fut approuvée par le roi, et il en décida ainsi.
And the mayde that shall please the King, let her reigne in the steade of Vashti. And this pleased the King, and he did so.
5 Or, à Suse, la capitale, vivait un homme originaire de Judée, portant le nom de Mardochée, fils de Yair, fils de Séméi, fils de Kich, de la tribu de Benjamin.
In the citie of Shushan, there was a certaine Iewe, whose name was Mordecai the sonne of Iair, the sonne of Shimei, the sonne of Kish a man of Iemini,
6 II avait été déporté de Jérusalem avec les captifs emmenés de Jérusalem en même temps que Ieconia, roi de Juda, par Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone.
Which had bene caryed away from Ierusalem with the captiuitie that was caryed away with Ieconiah King of Iudah (whom Nebuchad-nezzar King of Babel had caryed away)
7 Il était le tuteur de Hadassa, c’est-à-dire d’Esther, fille de son oncle, qui n’avait plus ni père ni mère; cette jeune fille était belle de taille et belle de visage. A la mort de son père et de sa mère, Mardochée l’avait adoptée comme sa fille.
And he nourished Hadassah, that is Ester, his vncles daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the mayde was fayre, and beautifull to looke on: and after the death of her father, and her mother, Mordecai tooke her for his own daughter
8 Lors donc que furent publiés l’ordre du roi et son édit et qu’on réunit nombre de jeunes filles à Suse, la capitale, sous la direction de Hêgaï, Esther fut, elle aussi, emmenée au palais du roi et confiée à la direction de Hêgaï, gardien des femmes.
And when the Kings commandement, and his decree was published, and many maydes were brought together to the palace of Shushan, vnder the hand of Hege, Ester was brought also vnto the Kings house vnder the hande of Hege the keeper of the women.
9 La jeune fille lui plut beaucoup et gagna ses bonnes grâces; aussi s’empressa-t-il de lui procurer les objets nécessaires à sa toilette et à son entretien, ainsi que les sept suivantes que devait lui fournir la maison du roi, et il lui témoigna, à elle et à ses suivantes, une faveur exceptionnelle dans le harem.
And the mayde pleased him, and she founde fauour in his sight: therefore he caused her things for purification to be giuen her speedily, and her state, and seuen comely maides to be giuer her out of the Kings house, and he gaue change to her and to her maydes of the best in the house of the women.
10 Esther n’avait fait connaître ni son peuple, ni son origine, Mardochée lui ayant recommandé de n’en rien faire.
But Ester shewed not her people and her kinred: for Mordecai had charged her, that shee should not tell it.
11 Et chaque jour Mardochée arpentait les abords de la cour du harem, pour s’informer du bien-être d’Esther et de ce qui advenait d’elle.
Aud Mordecai walked euery day before the court of the womens house, to knowe if Ester did well, and what should be done with her.
12 Or, quand arrivait le tour d’une des jeunes filles de se présenter devant le roi Assuérus, après le délai réglementaire assigné aux femmes, c’est-à-dire après douze mois révolus, car ce temps était pris par les soins de leur toilette, dont six mois pour l’emploi de l’huile de myrrhe et six mois pour l’emploi des aromates et des essences à l’usage des femmes
And when the course of euery mayd came, to go in to King Ahashuerosh, after that she had bene twelue moneths according to the maner of the women (for so were the dayes of their purifications accomplished, sixe moneths with oyle of myrrhe, and sixe moneths with sweete odours and in the purifying of the women:
13 alors la jeune fille se rendait auprès du roi, et tout ce qu’elle demandait à emporter avec elle du harem dans la maison du roi lui était accordé.
And thus went the maides vnto the King) whatsoeuer she required, was giuen her, to go with her out of the womens house vnto ye kings house.
14 Le soir elle venait et le matin elle rentrait dans un autre harem, confié à la surveillance de Chaachgaz, eunuque du roi, gardien des concubines. Elle ne retournait plus chez le roi, à moins que celui-ci ne voulût d’elle, auquel cas elle était mandée nominativement.
In the euening she went, and on the morow she returned into the second house of the women vnder the hand of Shaashgaz the Kings eunuche, which kept the concubines: shee came in to the King no more, except shee pleased the King, and that she were called by name.
15 Lorsque le tour d’Esther, fille d’Abihaïl, oncle de Mardochée, lequel l’avait adoptée comme sa fille, fut venu de paraître devant le roi, elle ne demanda rien en dehors de ce que proposait Hêgaï, eunuque du roi, gardien des femmes; et Esther s’attira les sympathies de tous ceux qui la voyaient.
Now when the course of Ester the daughter of Abihail the vncle of Mordecai (which had taken her as his owne daughter) came, that shee should go in to the King, she desired nothing, but what Hege the Kings eunuche the keeper of the women sayde: and Ester founde fauour in the sight of all them that looked vpon her.
16 Esther fut donc conduite au roi Assuérus, dans son palais royal, le dixième mois, qui est le mois de Tébêt, la septième année de son règne.
So Ester was taken vnto King Ahashuerosh into his house royall in the tenth moneth, which is the moneth Tebeth, in the seuenth yeere of his reigne.
17 Le roi se prit d’affection pour Esther plus que pour toutes les autres femmes; mieux que toutes les jeunes filles elle gagna ses bonnes grâces et sa bienveillance. Il posa la couronne royale sur sa tête et la proclama reine à la place de Vasthi.
And the King loued Ester aboue all the women, and shee founde grace and fauour in his sight more then all the virgins: so that he set the crowne of the kingdome vpon her head, and made her Queene instead of Vashti.
18 Puis le roi donna un grand festin à tous ses grands et officiers, festin en l’honneur d’Esther; il accorda des allégements aux provinces et distribua des cadeaux, dignes de la munificence royale.
Then the King made a great feast vnto all his princes, and his seruants, which was the feast of Ester, and gaue rest vnto the prouinces, and gaue gifts, according to the power of a King.
19 Lors du second rassemblement des jeunes filles, Mardochée était assis à la porte du roi.
And whe the virgins were gathered ye second time, then Mordecai sate in the Kings gate.
20 Esther ne révéla ni son peuple ni son origine, comme le lui avait recommandé Mardochée, Esther se conformant aux instructions de Mardochée, tout comme si elle était encore sous sa tutelle.
Ester had not yet shewed her kindred nor her people, as Mordecai had charged her: for Ester did after the worde of Mordecai, as when she was nourished with him.
21 A cette époque, alors que Mardochée se tenait à la porte du roi, Bigtân et Térech, deux des eunuques du roi, préposés à la garde du seuil, conçurent un violent ressentiment et cherchèrent à attenter à la vie du roi Assuérus.
In those dayes whe Mordecai sate in the Kings gate, two of the Kings eunuches, Bigthan and Teresh, which kept the doore, were wroth, and sought to lay hand on the King Ahashuerosh.
22 Mardochée eut connaissance du complot et en informa la reine Esther, qui en fit part au roi au nom de Mardochée.
And the thing was knowen to Mordecai, and he tolde it vnto Queene Ester, and Ester certified the King thereof in Mordecais name:
23 Une enquête fut ouverte, qui confirma la chose; les deux coupables furent pendus à une potence, et le fait fut consigné dans le livre des annales, en présence du roi.
and when inquisition was made, it was found so: therefore they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the booke of the Chronicles before the King.
