Ecclésiaste 1
1 Paroles de Kohélet, fils de David, roi à Jérusalem.
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
2 Vanité des vanités, a dit Kohélet, vanité des vanités; tout est vanité!
Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all [is] vanity.
3 Quel profit tire l’homme de tout le mal qu’il se donne sous le soleil?
What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
4 Une génération s’en va, une autre génération lui succède, et la terre subsiste perpétuellement.
[One] generation passeth away, and [another] generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
5 Le soleil se lève, le soleil se couche: il se hâte vers son point de départ, où il se lèvera encore,
The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.
6 pour s’avancer vers le sud et décrire sa courbe vers le nord; le vent progresse en évoluant toujours et repasse par les mêmes circuits.
The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.
7 Tous les fleuves vont à la mer, et la mer n’en est pas remplie; vers l’endroit qui est assigné aux fleuves, ils dirigent invariablement leur cours.
All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea [is] not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
8 Toutes choses sont toujours en mouvement; personne n’est capable d’en rendre compte. L’Œil n’en a jamais assez de voir, ni l’oreille ne se lasse d’entendre.
All things [are] full of labour; man cannot utter [it: ] the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
9 Ce qui a été c’est ce qui sera; ce qui s’est fait, c’est ce qui se fera: il n’y a rien de nouveau sous le soleil!
The thing that hath been, it [is that] which shall be; and that which is done [is] that which shall be done: and [there is] no new [thing] under the sun.
10 Il est telle chose dont on dirait volontiers: "Voyez, ceci est nouveau" Eh bien! Cette chose a déjà existé dans les temps qui nous ont précédés.
Is there [any] thing whereof it may be said, See, this [is] new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
11 Nul souvenir ne subsiste des anciens, de même de leurs plus récents successeurs il ne demeurera aucun souvenir chez ceux qui viendront plus tard.
[There is] no remembrance of former [things; ] neither shall there be [any] remembrance of [things] that are to come with [those] that shall come after.
12 Moi, Kohélet, je suis devenu roi d’Israël, à Jérusalem.
I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
13 Et j’ai pris à cœur d’étudier, d’examiner avec sagacité tout ce qui se passe sous le soleil: c’est une triste besogne que Dieu a offerte aux fils d’Adam pour s’en tracasser.
And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all [things] that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.
14 J’Ai donc observé toutes les œuvres qui s’accomplissent sous le soleil: eh bien! Tout est vanité et pâture de vent.
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all [is] vanity and vexation of spirit.
15 Ce qui est tordu ne peut être redressé, et ce qui manque ne peut entrer en compte.
[That which is] crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
16 Je me suis dit en moi-même: "Voilà que j’ai, moi, accumulé et amassé plus de sagesse que tous ceux qui m’ont précédé à Jérusalem; mon cœur a acquis un grand fonds de discernement et d’expérience."
I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all [they] that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
17 J’Avais en effet appliqué mon attention à connaître la sagesse et à discerner la folie et la sottise, et je me suis aperçu que cela aussi était pâture de vent;
And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.
18 car, abondance de sagesse, abondance de chagrin, et accroître sa science, c’est accroître sa peine.
For in much wisdom [is] much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
