Ecclésiaste 9
1 Tout cela, je l’ai noté dans mon esprit et cherché à le tirer au clair: les justes, les sages et ce qu’ils font sont dans la main de Dieu; les hommes ne se rendent compte ni de l’amour ni de la haine; tout leur échappe.
For I gave my mind to all this, even to search out all this, that the righteous and the wise and their works are in the hand of God, and yet neither his love nor hatred doth any man know. All is before them.
2 Tous sont soumis à des accidents pareils; un même sort attend le juste et le méchant, l’homme bon et pur et l’impur, celui qui sacrifie et celui qui ne sacrifie point; l’homme de bien est comme le pécheur, celui qui prête des serments comme celui qui craint de jurer.
All [[cometh to them]] as to all. There is one event to the righteous and to the wicked; to the good, to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not; as is the good, so is the sinner; he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.
3 C’Est là le défaut de tout ce qui s’accomplit sous le soleil, qu’une même destinée y soit réservée à tous; aussi le cœur des hommes déborde-t-il de méchanceté, la folie emplit leur âme leur vie durant; après cela… en route vers les morts!
This is an evil among all things which take place under the sun, that there is one event to all; therefore also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and afterward they go down to the dead.
4 Or, qui demeure dans la société des vivants peut avoir quelque espoir, car un chien vivant vaut mieux qu’un lion mort.
For who is there that is excepted? With all the living there is hope; for a living dog is better than a dead lion.
5 Les vivants savent du moins qu’ils mourront, tandis que les morts ne savent quoi que ce soit; pour eux plus de récompense, car leur souvenir même s’efface,
For the living know that they shall die; but the dead know not any thing, and there is no more to them any advantage, for their memory is forgotten.
6 leur amour, leur haine, leur jalousie, tout s’est évanoui ils n’ont plus désormais aucune part à ce qui se passe sous le soleil.
Their love also, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they a portion any more for ever in any thing which taketh place under the sun.
7 Va donc, mange ton pain allègrement et bois ton vin d’un cœur joyeux; car dès longtemps Dieu a pris plaisir à tes œuvres.
Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a cheerful heart; for long since hath God been pleased with thy works.
8 Qu’en tout temps tes vêtements soient blancs, et que l’huile ne cesse de parfumer ta tête.
Let thy garments be always white, and let not fragrant oil be wanting upon thy head.
9 Jouis de la vie avec la femme que tu aimes, tous les jours de l’existence éphémère qu’on t’accorde sous le soleil, oui, de ton existence fugitive car c’est là ta meilleure part dans la vie et dans le labeur que tu t’imposes sous le soleil.
Enjoy life with the wife whom thou lovest, all the days of thy vain life which he hath given thee under the sun, all thy vain days. For this is thy portion in life, and in thy labor with which thou weariest thyself under the sun.
10 Tout ce que tes propres moyens permettent à ta main de faire, fais-le; car il n’y aura ni activité, ni projet, ni science, ni sagesse dans le Cheol, vers lequel tu te diriges. (Sheol h7585)
Whatever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might! For there is no work nor device nor knowledge nor wisdom in the under-world, whither thou goest. (Sheol h7585)
11 J’Ai encore observé sous le soleil que le prix de la course n’est pas assuré aux plus légers, ni la victoire dans les combats aux plus forts, ni le pain aux gens intelligents, ni la richesse aux sages, ni la faveur à ceux qui savent; car mêmes destinées et mêmes accidents sont le lot de tous.
I turned and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor yet bread to the wise, nor riches to men of understanding, nor favor to men of knowledge; but time and chance happen to them all.
12 L’Homme ne connaît même pas son heure, pas plus que les poissons pris dans le filet fatal et les oiseaux pris au piège. Tout comme ceux-ci, les hommes sont retenus dans les lacets, au moment du désastre fondant soudainement sur eux.
For man knoweth not his time. As fishes that are taken in a destructive net, and as birds that are caught in a snare, so are the sons of men snared in a time of distress, when it falleth suddenly upon them.
13 Voici encore un effet de la sagesse que j’ai remarqué sous le soleil: il a paru important à mes yeux.
This also have I seen; even wisdom under the sun, and it seemed great to me.
14 J’Ai vu une petite ville, aux habitants clairsemés; un roi puissant marcha contre elle, l’investit et éleva autour d’elle de grandes redoutes.
There was a little city, and few men within it; and a great king came against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it.
15 Mais il se trouva dans cette ville un pauvre homme doué de sagesse: c’est lui qui sauva la ville par son esprit. Cependant personne ne s’était soucié de ce pauvre homme.
Now there was found within it a wise poor man; and he, by his wisdom, delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.
16 Mais je dis, moi: "Sagesse vaut mieux que force, bien que la sagesse de ce pauvre homme fût dédaignée et que ses paroles ne trouvassent pas d’écho."
Then said I, “Wisdom is better than strength;” and yet the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.
17 Les paroles des sages dites avec douceur sont mieux écoutées que les cris d’un souverain éclatant parmi des sots.
The quiet words of the wise are sooner heard than the shouting of a foolish ruler.
18 Mieux vaut la sagesse que des engins de guerre; mais un seul pécheur gâte beaucoup de bien.
Wisdom is better than weapons of war. But one offender destroyeth much good.
