Ecclésiaste 7
1 Un bon renom est préférable à l’huile parfumée, et le jour de la mort au jour de la naissance.
A good name [is] better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one’s birth.
2 Mieux vaut aller dans une maison de deuil que dans une maison où l’on festoie; là se voit la fin de tout homme: et les vivants doivent la prendre à cœur!
[It is] better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that [is] the end of all men; and the living will lay [it] to his heart.
3 Mieux vaut la tristesse que la gaieté, car le visage peut être sombre et le cœur satisfait.
Sorrow [is] better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
4 La pensée du sage se porte vers la maison de deuil, la pensée des fous vers la maison de plaisir.
The heart of the wise [is] in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools [is] in the house of mirth.
5 Mieux vaut entendre les reproches d’un sage que d’écouter les chansons des sots.
[It is] better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
6 Car tel le crépitement des broussailles sous la marmite, tels sont les rires des fous. Et cela aussi est vanité!
For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so [is] the laughter of the fool: this also [is] vanity.
7 Certes, la concussion affole le sage, et les présents font perdre le sens.
Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.
8 La fin d’une entreprise est préférable à son début; un caractère endurant l’emporte sur un caractère hautain.
Better [is] the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: [and] the patient in spirit [is] better than the proud in spirit.
9 Ne cède pas trop vite à ton humeur irascible, car la colère est à demeure au sein des fous.
Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.
10 Ne dis point: "D’Où vient que les temps passés valaient mieux que le présent?" Car c’est manquer de sagesse de poser cette question.
Say not thou, What is [the cause] that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.
11 Précieuse est la sagesse avec un patrimoine: grande supériorité pour ceux qui voient le soleil!
Wisdom [is] good with an inheritance: and [by it there is] profit to them that see the sun.
12 Car ainsi on est sous la protection de la sagesse et sous la protection de l’argent; toutefois la sagesse l’emporte, car elle prolonge la vie de ceux qui la possèdent.
For wisdom [is] a defence, [and] money [is] a defence: but the excellency of knowledge [is, that] wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
13 Regarde l’œuvre de Dieu: qui peut redresser ce qu’il a fait courbe?
Consider the work of God: for who can make [that] straight, which he hath made crooked?
14 Au jour du bonheur, sois content; et au jour du malheur, considère que Dieu a fait correspondre l’un à l’autre, de façon à ce que l’homme ne trouve pas à récriminer contre lui.
In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.
15 J’Ai tout vu au cours de mon éphémère existence: tel juste succombe malgré sa vertu, et tel méchant dure malgré sa perversité.
All [things] have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just [man] that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked [man] that prolongeth [his life] in his wickedness.
16 Ne sois pas juste à l’excès, ne sois pas sage plus qu’il ne faut; pourquoi t’exposer à la ruine?
Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?
17 Ne sois pas trop méchant, évite d’être sot; pourquoi voudrais-tu mourir avant le temps?
Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?
18 Tu feras bien de t’attacher à l’une des méthodes sans que ta main lâche l’autre: celui qui craint Dieu se tire d’affaire en toutes choses.
[It is] good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.
19 La sagesse est une force pour l’homme, plus efficace que dix chefs gouvernant une ville.
Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty [men] which are in the city.
20 II n’est pas d’homme juste sur terre qui fasse le bien sans jamais faillir.
For [there is] not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
21 N’Aie garde de faire attention à toutes les paroles qu’on débite; tu éviteras ainsi d’entendre ton esclave proférer des malédictions contre toi.
Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:
22 Car bien des fois, ton cœur le sait, il t’est arrivé de proférer des malédictions contre les autres.
For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.
23 Tout cela, je l’ai expérimenté avec sagacité; je disais: "Je voudrais me rendre maître de la sagesse!" Mais elle s’est tenue loin de moi.
All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it [was] far from me.
24 Ce qui existe est si loin et si infiniment profond! Qui pourrait y atteindre?
That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?
25 Je m’étais appliqué de tout cœur à tout examiner et scruter, à rechercher sagesse et raison, à apprécier aussi malignité et sottise, folie et insanités.
I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason [of things], and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness [and] madness:
26 Et ce que j’ai trouvé de plus amer que la mort, c’est la femme, dont le cœur n’est que guet-apens et pièges et dont les bras sont des chaînes. Celui qui jouit de la faveur de Dieu échappe à ses griffes, mais le pécheur s’y laisse prendre.
And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart [is] snares and nets, [and] her hands [as] bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.
27 Vois, c’est là ce que j’ai trouvé, dit l’Ecclésiaste, en ajoutant un fait à un autre pour arriver à une conclusion.
Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, [counting] one by one, to find out the account:
28 Mais il est une chose encore que j’ai cherchée et que je n’ai pas trouvée: parmi mille individus, j’ai pu trouver un homme, mais de femme, parmi eux tous, je n’en ai pas trouvé.
Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
29 Seulement voici ce que j’ai trouvé: c’est que Dieu a fait les hommes pour être droits; ce sont eux qui ont recours à toutes sortes de roueries.
Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
