Deutéronome 9
1 Ecoute, ô Israël: tu franchis maintenant le Jourdain, pour aller déposséder des nations plus grandes et plus puissantes que toi aux villes importantes, dont les remparts touchent le ciel;
Heare O Israel, Thou shalt passe ouer Iorden this day, to goe in and to possesse nations greater and mightier then thy selfe, and cities great and walled vp to heauen,
2 une peuplade nombreuse et géante, des enfants d’Anak! Et tu sais toi-même, tu l’as souvent ouï dire, qui peut tenir tête aux enfants d’Anak?
A people great and tall, euen the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak?
3 Tu reconnaîtras donc que c’est l’Éternel, ton Dieu, qui marche devant toi, comme un feu dévorant; c’est lui qui les anéantira, lui qui les fera plier devant toi, si bien que tu les vaincras et les détruiras sans peine, comme l’Éternel te l’a promis.
Vnderstand therefore that this day ye Lord thy God is he which goeth ouer before thee as a consuming fire: he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them downe before thy face: so thou shalt cast them out and destroy them suddenly, as the Lord hath said vnto thee.
4 Ne dis pas en ton cœur, lorsque l’Éternel, ton Dieu, les aura ainsi écartés de devant toi: "C’Est grâce à mon mérite que l’Éternel m’a introduit dans ce pays pour en prendre possession," quand c’est à cause de la perversité de ces peuples que l’Éternel les dépossède à ton profit.
Speake not thou in thine heart (after that the Lord thy God hath cast them out before thee) saying, For my righteousnesse the Lord hath brought me in, to possesse this land: but for the wickednesse of these nations the Lord hath cast them out before thee.
5 Non, ce n’est pas à ton mérite ni à la droiture de ton cœur que tu devras la conquête de leur pays: c’est pour leur iniquité que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, dépossède ces peuples à ton profit, et aussi pour accomplir la parole qu’il a jurée à tes pères, à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob.
For thou entrest not to inherite their lande for thy righteousnesse, or for thy vpright heart: but for the wickednesse of those nations, the Lord thy God doth cast them out before thee, and that he might performe the worde which the Lord thy God sware vnto thy fathers, Abraham, Izhak, and Iacob.
6 Sache-le, ce ne peut être pour ta vertu que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’accorde la possession de ce beau pays, puisque tu es un peuple réfractaire.
Vnderstand therefore, that ye Lord thy God giueth thee not this good land to possesse it for thy righteousnes: for thou art a stifnecked people.
7 Rappelle-toi, n’oublie jamais, combien tu as mécontenté l’Éternel, ton Dieu, dans le désert! Depuis le jour où tu es sorti du pays d’Egypte, jusqu’à votre arrivée en ce lieu-ci, vous avez été rebelles envers le Seigneur!
Remember, and forget not, howe thou prouokedst the Lord thy God to anger in the wildernesse: since the day that thou diddest depart out of the land of Egypt, vntill ye came vnto this place ye haue rebelled against the Lord.
8 Au Horeb même, vous avez mécontenté le Seigneur, et il s’irrita contre vous, au point de vouloir vous anéantir.
Also in Horeb ye prouoked the Lord to anger so that the Lord was wroth with you, euen to destroy you.
9 Je m’étais retiré sur la montagne pour recevoir les tables de pierre, les tables de l’alliance contractée par le Seigneur avec vous. Je restai sur la montagne quarante jours et quarante nuits, ne mangeant pas de pain, ne buvant point d’eau;
When I was gone vp into the mount, to receiue the tables of stone, the tables, I say, of the couenant, which the Lord made with you: and I abode in the mount fourtie daies and fourtie nights, and I neither ate bread nor yet dranke water:
10 et le Seigneur me remit les deux tables de pierre, burinées de son doigt divin, et contenant toutes les paroles que le Seigneur vous avait adressées sur la montagne, du milieu du feu, le jour de la convocation.
Then the Lord deliuered me two tables of stone, written with the finger of God, and in them was conteyned according to all the wordes which the Lord had said vnto you in the mount out of the middes of the fire, in the day of the assemblie.
11 Ce fut au bout de quarante jours et de quarante nuits que le Seigneur me remit les deux tables de pierre, tables de l’alliance;
And when the fourtie dayes and fourtie nightes were ended, the Lord gaue me the two tables of stone, the tables, I say, of the couenant.
12 et il me dit alors: "Va, descends d’ici en toute hâte, car on a perverti ton peuple, que tu as conduit hors de l’Egypte; ils ont tôt abandonné la voie que je leur avais prescrite, ils se sont fabriqué une idole!"
And the Lord said vnto me, Arise, get thee downe quickly from hence: for thy people which thou hast brought out of Egypt, haue corrupt their wayes: they are soone turned out of the way, which I commanded them: they haue made them a molten image.
13 Puis, l’Éternel me parla ainsi: "J’Ai observé ce peuple: or, c’est un peuple rétif.
Furthermore, the Lord spake vnto me, saying, I haue seene this people, and beholde, it is a stifnecked people.
14 Laisse-moi, je veux les anéantir, je veux effacer leur nom sous le ciel, et faire naître de toi une nation plus grande et plus nombreuse que celle-ci."
Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and put out their name from vnder heaue, and I wil make of thee a mightie nation, and greater then they be.
15 Et je redescendis de la montagne, qui était alors en feu, tenant les deux tables d’alliance de mes deux mains;
So I returned, and came downe from the Mount (and the Mount burnt with fire, and ye two Tables of the couenant were in my two handes)
16 et je vis qu’en effet vous aviez péché contre l’Éternel, votre Dieu, vous vous étiez fait un veau de métal, prompts à quitter la voie que le Seigneur vous avait indiquée;
Then I looked, and beholde, ye had sinned against the Lord your God: for ye had made you a molten calfe, and had turned quickly out of the way which the Lord had commanded you.
17 et je saisis les deux tables, je les jetai de mes deux mains, je les brisai à vos yeux.
Therefore I tooke the two Tables, and cast them out of my two handes, and brake them before your eyes.
18 Puis je me prosternai devant le Seigneur, restant comme la première fois quarante jours et quarante nuits, sans manger de pain ni boire d’eau, à cause du grave péché que vous aviez commis en faisant ce qui déplaît au Seigneur, ce qui devait l’offenser.
And I fell downe before the Lord, fourtie dayes, and fourtie nightes, as before: I neither ate bread nor dranke water, because of al your sinnes, which ye had committed, in doing wickedly in the sight of the Lord, in that ye prouoked him vnto wrath.
19 Car j’étais effrayé de cette colère et de cette indignation dont le Seigneur était animé pour votre perte. Mais, cette fois-là encore, le Seigneur m’exauça.
(For I was afraide of the wrath and indignation, wherewith the Lord was mooued against you, euen to destroy you) yet the Lord heard me at that time also.
20 Aaron aussi avait gravement irrité l’Éternel, qui voulait l’anéantir: j’intercédai pour Aaron aussi dans ce temps-là.
Likewise ye Lord was very angrie with Aaron, euen to destroy him: but at that time I prayed also for Aaron.
21 Et votre ouvrage impie, ce veau que vous aviez fabriqué, je m’en saisis, le jetai au feu, le mis entièrement en pièces et le réduisis en menue poussière; puis je répandis cette poussière dans le torrent qui descend de la montagne.
And I tooke your sinne, I meane the calfe which ye had made, and burnt him with fire, and stamped him and ground him small, euen vnto very dust: and I cast the dust thereof into the riuer, that descended out of the mount.
22 De même à Tabéra, à Massa, à Kibroth-Hattaava, partout, vous avez irrité le Seigneur.
Also in Taberah, and in Massah and in Kibrothhattaauah ye prouoked ye Lord to anger.
23 Et quand l’Éternel voulut vous faire partir de Kadêch-Barnéa, en disant: "Allez prendre possession du pays que je vous ai donné", vous avez désobéi à la parole de l’Éternel, votre Dieu, vous n’avez pas eu foi en lui, vous n’avez pas écouté sa voix!
Likewise when the Lord sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Goe vp, and possesse the land which I haue giuen you, then ye rebelled against the commandement of the Lord your God, and beleeued him not, nor hearkened vnto his voyce.
24 Oui, vous avez été rebelles envers le Seigneur, depuis que je vous connais!
Ye haue bene rebellious vnto the Lord, since the day that I knewe you.
25 Je restai donc prosterné devant le Seigneur pendant les quarante jours et les quarante nuits que j’ai dit, car le Seigneur menaçait de vous anéantir,
Then I fell downe before ye Lord fourtie dayes and fourtie nightes, as I fell downe before, because ye Lord had said, that he woulde destroy you.
26 et j’implorai le Seigneur, et je dis: "Seigneur-Elohim! N’Extermine pas ton peuple, ton héritage, que tu as sauvé par ta puissance, que tu as, d’une invincible main, fait sortir de l’Egypte!
And I prayed vnto the Lord, and saide, O Lord God, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatnesse, whom thou hast brought out of Egypt by a mightie hand.
27 Souviens-toi de tes serviteurs, d’Abraham, d’Isaac et de Jacob; ne considère pas l’insoumission de ce peuple, sa perversité ni sa faute,
Remember thy seruants Abraham, Izhak, and Iaakob: looke not to ye stubburnes of this people, nor to their wickednes, nor to their sinne,
28 de peur qu’on ne dise, dans ce pays d’où tu nous as fait sortir: "C’Est que l’Éternel n’avait pas le pouvoir de les introduire dans le pays qu’il leur avait promis; ou bien, par haine pour eux, il les a fait sortir d’ici pour les immoler dans le désert."
Lest the countrey, whence thou broughtest them, say, Because ye Lord was not able to bring them into the land which he promised them, or because he hated them, he caried them out, to slay them in the wildernesse.
29 Et pourtant, ils sont ton peuple et ton héritage, que tu as délivré par ta haute puissance, par ton bras triomphant!"
Yet they are thy people, and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest out by thy mightie power, and by thy stretched out arme.
