Deutéronome 29
1 Ce sont là les termes du pacte que l’Éternel ordonna à Moïse d’établir avec les enfants d’Israël dans le pays de Moab, indépendamment du pacte qu’il avait conclu avec eux au Horeb.
These, are the words of the covenant which Yahweh commanded Moses to solemnise with the sons of Israel in the land of Moab, —besides the covenant, which he solemnised with them in Horeb.
2 Moïse fit appel à tout Israël, et leur dit: "Vous-mêmes, vous avez vu tout ce que l’Éternel a fait à vos yeux, dans le pays d’Egypte, à Pharaon, à tous ses serviteurs, à son pays entier;
And Moses called unto all Israel and said unto them, —Ye yourselves, saw all that Yahweh did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, unto Pharaoh and unto all his servants and unto all his land:
3 ces grandes épreuves dont tes yeux furent témoins, ces signes et ces prodiges extraordinaires.
the great provings which thine own eyes saw, —those great signs and wonders:
4 Et jusqu’à ce jour, le Seigneur ne vous a pas encore donné un cœur pour sentir, des yeux pour voir, ni des oreilles pour entendre!
yet hath Yahweh not given onto you a heart to know, or eyes to see or ears to hear, —until this day.
5 Je vous ai fait marcher quarante ans dans le désert, vos vêtements ne se sont point usés sur vous, ni la chaussure de vos pieds ne s’est usée.
I led you, therefore forty years in the desert, —your mantles fell not with age, from off you, even thy sandal, fell not with age from off thy foot:
6 Du pain, vous n’en avez pas mangé; du vin ou autre boisson forte, vous n’en avez pas bu, afin que vous apprissiez que c’est moi, l’Éternel, qui suis votre Dieu!
Bread, ye did not eat, and wine and strong drink, ye did not drink, —that ye might know that, I, Yahweh, was your God.
7 Vous êtes ainsi parvenus jusqu’à cette contrée. Là, Sihôn, roi de Hesbon, et Og, roi du Basan, ont marché à notre rencontre pour nous livrer bataille, et nous les avons battus.
And when ye entered into this place, then came forth Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan to meet us in battle and we smote them;
8 Puis, nous avons pris leur pays et l’avons donné, comme possession héréditaire, à la tribu de Ruben, à celle de Gad et à la demi-tribu de Manassé.
and we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites, —and unto the half tribe of Manasseh.
9 Observez donc les termes de cette alliance et mettez-les en pratique, si vous voulez réussir dans toutes vos œuvres.
Ye must, therefore, keep the words of this covenant, and do them, —that ye may prosper in all that ye do.
10 Vous êtes placés aujourd’hui, vous tous, en présence de l’Éternel, votre Dieu: vos chefs de tribus, vos anciens, vos préposés, chaque citoyen d’Israël;
Ye are stationed, to-day, all of you, before Yahweh your God, —your heads your tribes, and your elders and your officers, every man of Israel;
11 vos enfants, vos femmes et l’étranger qui est dans tes camps, depuis le fendeur de bois jusqu’au puiseur d’eau,
your little ones your wives, and thy sojourner that is in the midst of thy camps, —from him that heweth thy wood unto him that draweth thy water:
12 afin d’entrer dans l’alliance de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, et dans son pacte solennel, par lesquels il traite avec toi en ce jour,
that thou mayest pass through into the covenant of Yahweh thy God and into his oath, —which Yahweh thy God is solemnising with thee, to-day:
13 voulant te constituer aujourd’hui pour son peuple, et lui-même être ton Dieu, comme il te l’a déclaré, et comme il l’avait juré à tes pères Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.
that he may confirm thee to-day as his own people, while, he, becometh thine own God, as he spake unto thee, —and as he sware unto thy fathers, unto Abraham unto Isaac and unto Jacob.
14 Et ce n’est pas avec vous seuls que j’institue cette alliance et ce pacte;
And not with you alone, am I solemnising this covenant and this oath;
15 mais avec ceux qui sont aujourd’hui placés avec nous, en présence de l’Éternel, notre Dieu, et avec ceux qui ne sont pas ici, à côté de nous, en ce jour.
but with him who is here with us, standing to-day before Yahweh our God, —and with him who is not here with us to-day.
16 Car vous savez le séjour que nous avons fait au pays d’Egypte, et nos pérégrinations parmi les peuples où vous avez passé;
(For, ye, know, how we dwelt in the land of Egypt, —and how we passed through the midst of the nations which ye did pass through;
17 vous avez vu leurs abominations et leurs immondes idoles, le bois et la pierre; l’argent et l’or déifiés chez eux.
and ye saw their disgusting images, and their manufactured gods, —the wood and the stone, the silver and the gold that are with them.)
18 Or, il pourrait se trouver parmi vous un homme ou une femme, une famille, une tribu, dont l’esprit, infidèle aujourd’hui déjà à l’Éternel, notre Dieu, se déterminerait à servir les dieux de ces nations; il pourrait exister parmi vous quelque racine d’où naîtraient des fruits vénéneux et amers.
Lest there be among you—a man or a woman or a family or a tribe, whose heart is turning to-day, from Yahweh our God, to go and serve the gods of those nations, —lest there be among you a root fruitful of poison and wormwood;
19 C’Est-à-dire qu’après avoir entendu les termes de cette imprécation, cet homme se donnerait de l’assurance dans le secret de son cœur, en disant: "Je resterai heureux, tout en me livrant à la passion de mon cœur;" et alors la passion assouvie entraînerait celle qui a soif.
and so it come to pass while he is hearing the words of this oath, that he will bless himself in his heart—saying, Prosperity, shall I have, although in the stubbornness of my heart, I go on, —so that the drunkenness addeth to the thirst:
20 L’Éternel ne consentira jamais à lui pardonner! Oui, alors, la colère de l’Éternel et son indignation s’enflammeront contre cet homme, et toutes les malédictions consignées dans ce livre s’abattront sur lui, et le Seigneur effacera son nom de dessous le ciel.
Yahweh will not be willing to forgive him, but, then, will the anger of Yahweh and his jealousy smoke against that man, and all the oath that is written in this scroll, shall settle down upon him, —and Yahweh wipe out his name from under the heavens;
21 Et il le distinguera, par le malheur, entre toutes les tribus d’Israël, en lui infligeant toutes les malédictions du pacte formulé dans ce livre de la doctrine.
and Yahweh single him out for calamity, out of all the tribes of Israel, —according to all the oaths of the covenant that is written in this scroll of the law.
22 Alors, quand les générations futures, vos descendants qui naîtront plus tard, et l’étranger venu d’une contrée lointaine, observeront les plaies de ce pays-là et les calamités dont le Seigneur l’aura affligé:
So that the generation coming after—your sons who shall rise up after you, and the foreigner who shall come in from a far-off land, will say—when they see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses thereof wherewith Yahweh hath made it sick:
23 terre de soufre et de sel, partout calcinée, inculte et improductive, impuissante à faire pousser une herbe; ruinée comme Sodome et Gomorrhe, Adma et Séboïm, que l’Éternel bouleversa dans sa colère et dans son courroux;
brimstone and salt burning up all the land thereof, it shall not be sown neither shall it shoot forth neither shall there come up thereon any herbage, —like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which Yahweh overthrow in his anger and in his wrath:
24 et quand ils diront, tous ces peuples: "A quel propos l’Éternel a-t-il ainsi traité ce pays? Pourquoi s’est allumée cette grande colère?"
yea all the nations will say, For what cause, hath Yahweh done, thus, unto this land? what meaneth this great heat of anger?
25 On répondra: "Parce qu’ils ont abandonné l’alliance de l’Éternel, Dieu de leurs pères, l’alliance qu’il avait contractée avec eux, après les avoir fait sortir du pays d’Egypte;
Then will men say, Because they forsook the covenant of Yahweh the God of their fathers, —which he solemnised with them, when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt;
26 parce qu’ils sont allés servir des divinités étrangères et se prosterner devant elles, des divinités qu’ils ne connaissaient point et qu’ils n’avaient pas reçues en partage.
and went and served other gods, and bowed down to them, —gods which they had not known, and in which he had given them no share:
27 Alors la colère de l’Éternel s’est allumée contre ce pays-là, au point de diriger sur lui toutes les malédictions écrites dans ce livre;
therefore did the anger of Yahweh kindle upon that land, —to bring in upon it all the curse that is written in this scroll;
28 et l’Éternel les a arrachés de leur sol avec colère, animosité, indignation extrême, et il les a jetés sur une autre terre comme cela se voit aujourd’hui."
and therefore hath Yahweh rooted them out, from off their own soil, in anger and in wrath and in great indignation, —and cast them into another land as at this day.
29 Les choses cachées appartiennent au Seigneur, notre Dieu; mais les choses révélées importent à nous et à nos enfants jusqu’aux derniers âges, afin que nous mettions en pratique toutes les paroles de cette doctrine.
The secret things, [belong unto Yahweh our God] and, the things that are revealed, belong to us and to our children unto times age-abiding, that we may do all the words of this law.
