Deutéronome 20
1 "Quand tu t’avanceras contre tes ennemis pour leur livrer bataille, et que tu verras cavalerie et chariots de guerre, une armée supérieure à la tienne, n’en sois pas effrayé; car tu as avec toi l’Éternel, ton Dieu, qui t’a fait sortir du pays d’Egypte.
When thou shalt go out to wage war against thine enemy, and shalt see the horses and chariots of a people more in number than thou, thou shalt not be afraid of them, —for, Yahweh thy God, is with thee, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
2 Or, quand vous serez sur le point de combattre, le pontife s’avancera et parlera au peuple.
And it shall be, when ye are coming nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people;
3 Il leur dira: "Ecoute, Israël! Vous allez, en ce moment, livrer bataille à vos ennemis; que votre courage ne mollisse point; soyez sans crainte, ne vous laissez ni déconcerter ni terrifier par eux.
and shall say unto them, —Hear, O Israel, ye are coming near to-day, unto battle against your enemies, —let not your heart faint do not fear nor start nor quake because of them.
4 Car c’est l’Éternel, votre Dieu, qui marche avec vous, afin de combattre pour vous contre vos ennemis et de vous procurer la victoire."
For Yahweh your God, is he that is going with you, —to fight for you against your enemies to save you.
5 Ensuite les préposés parleront au peuple en ces termes: "Si quelqu’un a bâti une maison neuve et n’en a pas encore pris possession, qu’il parte et s’en retourne à sa maison; car il pourrait mourir dans la bataille, et un autre en prendrait possession.
Then shall the officers speak unto the people saying, Who is the man that hath built a new house and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return unto his house, —lest he die in the battle, and, another man dedicate it.
6 Si quelqu’un a planté une vigne et n’en a pas encore acquis la jouissance, qu’il parte et s’en retourne chez lui; car il pourrait mourir dans la bataille, et un autre acquerrait cette jouissance.
And who is the man that hath planted a vineyard and hath not thrown it open? let him go and return unto his house, —lest he die in the battle, and another man, throw it open.
7 Et si quelqu’un a promis mariage à une femme et ne l’a pas encore épousée, qu’il parte et s’en retourne chez lui; car il pourrait mourir dans la bataille, et un autre homme l’épouserait."
And who is the man that hath betrothed a wife and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, —lest he die in the battle, and, another man, take her.
8 Les préposés adresseront de nouveau la parole au peuple, et diront: "S’Il est un homme qui ait peur et dont le cœur soit lâche, qu’il se retire et retourne chez lui, pour que le cœur de ses frères ne défaille point comme le sien!"
Then shall the officers further speak unto the people, and say—Who is the man that is fearful and faint-hearted? let him go and return unto his house, —lest his brethren’s heart melt as well as his heart.
9 Alors, les préposés ayant fini de parler au peuple, on placera des officiers de légions à la tête de l’armée.
And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, then shall they appoint captains of hosts at the head of the people.
10 Quand tu marcheras sur une ville pour l’attaquer, tu l’inviteras d’abord à la paix.
When thou shalt come nigh unto a city, to fight against it, —then shalt thou proclaim unto it—peace,
11 Alors, si elle te répond dans le sens de la paix et t’ouvre ses portes, tout ce qu’elle renferme d’habitants te devront tribut et te serviront.
and it shall be if peace, be the answer it giveth thee, and it open unto thee, then shall it be, that, all the people that are found therein, shall become thy tributaries and shall serve thee.
12 Mais si elle ne compose pas avec toi et veut te faire la guerre, tu assiégeras cette ville.
But if it will not make peace with thee, but will make war with thee, then shalt thou lay siege to it;
13 Et l’Éternel, ton Dieu, la livrera en ton pouvoir, et tu feras périr tous ses habitants mâles par le tranchant de l’épée.
and Yahweh thy God will deliver it into thy hand, —and thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword;
14 II n’y aura que les femmes, les enfants, le bétail, et tout ce qui se trouvera dans la ville en fait de butin, que tu pourras capturer; et tu profiteras de la dépouille de tes ennemis, que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’aura livrée.
but the women and the little ones and the cattle and all that shall be in the city—all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take as thy prey, —so shalt thou eat the spoil of thine enemies, whom Yahweh thy God hath delivered unto thee.
15 Ainsi procéderas-tu pour toutes les villes situées très loin de chez toi, qui ne font point partie des villes de ces nations;
Thus, shalt thou do unto all the cities that are very far away from thee, —which are not of the cities of those nations.
16 mais dans les villes de ces peuples que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne comme héritage, tu ne laisseras pas subsister une âme.
But of the cities of these peoples which Yahweh thy God is giving unto thee as an inheritance, shalt thou not save alive, any breathing thing.
17 Car tu dois les vouer à l’extermination, le Héthéen et l’Amorréen, le Cananéen et le Phérézéen, le Hévéen et le Jébuséen, comme te l’a commandé l’Éternel, ton Dieu,
But thou shalt devote them to destruction—the Hittites and the Amorites the Canaanites and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, —as Yahweh thy God hath commanded thee:
18 afin qu’ils ne vous apprennent pas à imiter toutes les abominations commises par eux en l’honneur de leurs dieux, et à devenir coupables envers l’Éternel, votre Dieu.
lest they teach you to do, according to all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods, —and so ye sin against Yahweh your God.
19 Si tu es arrêté longtemps au siège d’une ville que tu attaques pour t’en rendre maître, tu ne dois cependant pas en détruire les arbres en portant sur eux la cognée: ce sont eux qui te nourrissent, tu ne dois pas les abattre. Oui, l’arbre du champ c’est l’homme même, tu l’épargneras dans les travaux du siège.
When thou shalt besiege a city for many days to fight against it, to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by wielding against them an axe, when of them, thou mightest eat, them, there-fore shalt thou not cut down, —for, Is the tree of the field, a man, that it should enter, because of thee into the siege?
20 Seulement, l’arbre que tu sauras n’être pas un arbre fruitier, celui-là tu peux le sacrifier et l’abattre, pour l’employer à des travaux de siège contre la ville qui est en guerre avec toi, jusqu’à ce qu’elle succombe.
Nevertheless, the tree of which thou knowest that it is, not a tree yielding food, the same, mayest thou destroy, and cut down, —and so build up a siege-work against the city which is making war with thee, until thou hast subdued it.
