Deutéronome 13

1 S’Il s’élève au milieu de toi un prophète ou un visionnaire, t’offrant pour caution un signe ou un miracle;

If there arise in the midst of thee a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and he giveth thee a sign or a token,

2 quand même s’accomplirait le signe ou le miracle qu’il t’a annoncé, en disant: "Suivons des dieux étrangers (que tu ne connais pas) et adorons-les",

And the sign or the token come to pass, whereof he spoke unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou dost not know, and let us serve them:

3 tu n’écouteras pas les paroles de ce prophète ou de ce visionnaire! Car l’Éternel, votre Dieu, vous met à l’épreuve, pour constater si vous l’aimez réellement de tout votre cœur et de toute votre âme.

Then shalt thou not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or unto that dreamer of dreams; for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye indeed love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

4 C’Est l’Éternel, votre Dieu, qu’il faut suivre, c’est lui que vous devez craindre; vous n’observerez que ses préceptes, n’obéirez qu’à sa voix; à lui votre culte, à lui votre attachement!

After the Lord your God shall ye walk, and him shall ye fear, and his commandments shall ye keep, and his voice shall ye obey, and him shall ye serve, and unto him shall ye cleave.

5 Pour ce prophète ou ce visionnaire, il sera mis à mort, parce qu’il a prêché la révolte contre l’Éternel, votre Dieu, qui vous a tirés du pays d’Egypte et rachetés de la maison de servitude, voulant ainsi t’écarter de la voie que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’a ordonné de suivre; et tu extirperas le mal du milieu de toi.

And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken revolt against the Lord your God, who hath brought you out of the land of Egypt, and who hath redeemed you out of the house of bond-men, to mislead thee front the way which the Lord thy God commanded thee to walk therein; and thou shalt put the evil away from the midst of thee.

6 Si ton frère, l’enfant de ta mère, si ton fils ou ta fille, ta compagne ou l’ami de ton cœur vient secrètement te séduire, en disant: "Allons servir des dieux étrangers," que toi ni tes pères n’avez jamais connus,

If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, who is [dear to thee] as thy own soul, should entice thee, in secret, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou dost not know, either thou, or thy fathers;

7 tels que les dieux des peuples qui sont autour de vous, dans ton voisinage ou loin de toi, depuis un bout de la terre jusqu’à l’autre,

Some of the gods of the nations which are round about you, that are nigh unto thee, or that are far off from thee, from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth:

8 toi, n’y accède pas, ne l’écoute point: bien plus, ferme ton œil à la pitié, ne l’épargne pas ni ne dissimule son crime,

Then shalt thou not consent unto him, nor shalt thou hearken unto him; nor shall thy eye look with pity on him, nor shalt thou spare, nor shalt thou conceal it for him;

9 au contraire, tu devras le faire périr! Ta main le frappera la première pour qu’il meure, et la main de tout le peuple ensuite.

But thou shalt surely kill him; thy hand shall be the first upon him to put him to death, and the hand of all the people afterward.

10 C’Est à coups de pierres que tu le feras mourir, parce qu’il a tenté de t’éloigner de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, qui t’a délivré du pays d’Egypte, de la maison d’esclavage,

And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he sought to mislead thee from the Lord thy God, who hath brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bond-men.

11 et afin que tout Israël l’apprenne et tremble, et que nul ne commette plus un tel méfait au milieu de vous.

And all Israel shall hear it, and they shall be afraid, and they shall not do any more such a wicked deed as this is in the midst of thee.

12 Si tu entends dire, à l’égard de l’une des villes que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te donnera pour y habiter,

If thou shouldst hear concerning one of thy cities, which the Lord thy God hath given thee to dwell there, saying,

13 que des hommes pervers, nés dans ton sein, ont égaré les habitants de cette ville, en disant: "Allons, servons des dieux étrangers," que vous ne connaissez point,

There have gone forth men, children of worthlessness, from the midst of thee, and have misled the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known:

14 tu feras une enquête, tu examineras, tu t’informeras avec soin; et si le fait est avéré, constant, si cette abomination a été commise au milieu de toi,

Then shalt thou inquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be true, the thing is certain, such abomination hath been wrought in the midst of thee:

15 tu passeras au fil de l’épée les habitants de cette ville, tu la voueras, avec tout ce qu’elle renferme, jusqu’au bétail, au tranchant du glaive;

Then shalt thou smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, devoting it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, to the edge of the sword.

16 tu en réuniras toutes les richesses au centre de la place, et tu livreras au feu la ville et tous ses biens, sans réserve, en l’honneur de l’Éternel, ton Dieu. Elle restera une ruine éternelle, elle ne sera plus rebâtie.

And all its spoil shalt thou gather into the midst of the market-place thereof, and thou shalt burn with fire the city, and all its spoil entirely, unto the Lord thy God; and it shall be a ruinous heap for ever: it shall not be built again.

17 Que rien de la cité maudite ne s’attache à ta main, afin que l’Éternel apaise sa colère, qu’il te prenne en pitié et te dédommage en te multipliant, comme il l’a juré à tes pères,

And there shall not cleave to thy hand aught of the devoted things; in order that the Lord may turn from the fierceness of his anger, and grant thee mercy, and have mercy upon thee, and multiply thee, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers;

18 si tu écoutes la voix de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, en observant tous ses commandements que je te signifie en ce jour, en faisant ce qui est juste aux yeux de l’Éternel, ton Dieu.

When thou wilt hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, to keep all his commandments which I command thee this day, to do what is right in the eyes of the Lord thy God.
