Deutéronome 1

1 Ce sont là les paroles que Moïse adressa à tout Israël en deçà du Jourdain, dans le désert, dans la plaine en face de Souf, entre Pharan et Tofel, Labân, Hacéroth et Di-Zahab.

These bee the wordes which Moses spake vnto all Israel, on this side Iorden in the wildernesse, in the plaine, ouer against the red Sea, betweene Paran and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Di-zahab.

2 Il y a onze journées depuis le Horeb, en passant par le mont Séir, jusqu’à Kadéch-Barnéa.

There are eleuen dayes iourney from Horeb vnto Kadesh-barnea, by the way of mout Seir.

3 Or, ce fut dans la quarantième année, le onzième mois, le premier jour du mois, que Moïse redit aux enfants d’Israël tout ce que l’Éternel lui avait ordonné à leur égard.

And it came to passe in the first day of the eleuenth moneth, in the fourtieth yeere that Moses spake vnto the children of Israel according vnto all that the Lord had giuen him in commandement vnto them,

4 Après avoir défait Sihon, roi des Amorréens, qui résidait à Hesbon, et Og, roi du Basan, qui résidait à Astaroth et à Edréi;

After that he had slaine Sihon the king of the Amorites which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, which dwelt at Ashtaroth in Edrei.

5 en deçà du Jourdain, dans le pays de Moab, Moïse se mit en devoir d’exposer cette doctrine, et il dit:

On this side Iorden in the lande of Moab began Moses to declare this lawe, saying,

6 "L’Éternel notre Dieu nous avait parlé au Horeb en ces termes: "Assez longtemps vous avez demeuré dans cette montagne.

The Lord our God spake vnto vs in Horeb, saying, Ye haue dwelt long ynough in this mount,

7 Partez, poursuivez votre marche, dirigez-vous vers les monts amorréens et les contrées voisines, vers la plaine, la montagne, la vallée, la région méridionale, les côtes de la mer, le pays des Cananéens et le Liban, jusqu’au grand fleuve, le fleuve d’Euphrate.

Turne you and depart, and goe vnto the mountaine of the Amorites, and vnto all places neere thereunto in the plaine, in the mountaine, or in the valley: both Southwarde, and to the Sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and vnto Lebanon: euen vnto the great riuer, the riuer Perath.

8 Voyez, je vous livre ce pays! Allez prendre possession du pays que l’Éternel a juré à vos pères, Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, de donner à eux et à leur postérité après eux."

Beholde, I haue set the land before you: go in and possesse that land which the Lord sware vnto your fathers, Abraham, Izhak, and Iaakob, to giue vnto them and to their seede after them.

9 Dans ce temps-là, je vous parlai ainsi: "Je ne puis assumer, moi seul, votre charge.

And I spake vnto you the same time, saying, I am not able to beare you my selfe alone:

10 L’Éternel, votre Dieu, vous a fait multiplier, et vous voilà, aujourd’hui, nombreux comme les étoiles du ciel.

The Lord your God hath multiplied you: and beholde, ye are this day as the starres of heauen in nomber:

11 Veuille l’Éternel, Dieu de vos pères, vous rendre mille fois plus nombreux encore et vous bénir comme il vous l’a promis!

(The Lord God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many moe as ye are, and blesse you, as he hath promised you)

12 Comment donc supporterais-je seul votre labeur, et votre fardeau, et vos contestations!

Howe can I alone beare your combrance and your charge, and your strife?

13 Choisissez parmi vous, dans vos tribus, des hommes sages, judicieux et éprouvés; je les établirai vos chefs."

Bring you men of wisedome and of vnderstanding, and knowen among your tribes, and I will make them rulers ouer you:

14 Vous me répondîtes en disant: "Ce que tu conseilles de faire est excellent."

Then ye answered me and said, The thing is good that thou hast commanded vs to doe.

15 Et je désignai les principaux de vos tribus, hommes sages et éprouvés, et je vous les donnai pour chefs, soit commandants de chiliades, de centuries, de cinquantaines et de dizaines, soit commissaires de vos tribus.

So I tooke the chiefe of your tribes wise and knowen men, and made them rulers ouer you, captaines ouer thousands, and captaines ouer hundreds, and captaines ouer fiftie, and captaines ouer tenne, and officers among your tribes.

16 Je donnai alors à vos juges les instructions suivantes: "Ecoutez également tous vos frères et prononcez équitablement, entre chacun et son frère, entre chacun et l’étranger.

And I charged your iudges that same time, saying, Heare the controuersies betweene your brethren, and iudge righteously betweene euery man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.

17 Ne faites point, en justice, acception de personnes; donnez audience au petit comme au grand, ne craignez qui que ce soit, car la justice est à Dieu! Que si une affaire est trop difficile pour vous, déférez-la moi et j’en prendrai connaissance."

Ye shall haue no respect of person in iudgement, but shall heare the small aswell as the great: yee shall not feare the face of man: for the iudgement is Gods: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring vnto me, and I will heare it.

18 Et je vous prescrivis, dans ce même temps, tout ce que vous aviez à observer.

Also I commanded you the same time all the things which ye should doe.

19 Nous partîmes du Horeb, nous traversâmes tout ce long et redoutable désert que vous savez, nous dirigeant vers les monts amorréens, comme l’Éternel notre Dieu nous l’avait prescrit, et nous atteignîmes Kadêch-Barnéa.

Then we departed from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible wildernesse (as yee haue seene) by the way of the mountaine of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded vs: and we came to Kadesh-barnea.

20 Et je vous dis: "Vous voici arrivés au pied des monts amorréens, que l’Éternel, notre Dieu, nous donne.

And I saide vnto you, Yee are come vnto the mountaine of the Amorites, which the Lord our God doeth giue vnto vs.

21 Regarde! L’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’a livré ce pays; va, prends-en possession, comme te l’a dit l’Éternel, Dieu de tes pères; sois sans peur et sans faiblesse!"

Beholde, the Lord thy God hath layde the land before thee: go vp and possesse it, as the Lord the God of thy fathers hath saide vnto thee: feare not, neither be discouraged.

22 Mais vous vîntes vers moi, tous, en disant: "Nous voudrions envoyer quelques hommes en avant, qui exploreraient pour nous ce pays et qui nous renseigneraient sur le chemin que nous devons suivre et sur les villes où nous devons aller."

Then ye came vnto me euery one, and said, We wil send men before vs, to search vs out the land and to bring vs word againe, what way we must go vp by, and vnto what cities we shall come.

23 La proposition me plut, et je choisis parmi vous douze hommes, un homme par tribu.

So the saying pleased me well, and I tooke twelue men of you, of euery tribe one.

24 Ils partirent, s’avancèrent sur la montagne, atteignirent la vallée d’Echkol, et explorèrent cette contrée.

Who departed, and went vp into the mountaine, and came vnto the riuer Eshcol, and searched out the land.

25 Puis ils prirent de ses fruits, qu’ils nous apportèrent, et nous rendirent compte en disant: "Il est bon, le pays que l’Éternel, notre Dieu, nous donne."

And tooke of the fruite of the land in their hands, and brought it vnto vs, and brought vs worde againe, and sayd, It is a good land, which the Lord our God doeth giue vs.

26 Mais vous refusâtes d’y monter, désobéissant ainsi à la voix de l’Éternel, votre Dieu;

Notwithstanding, ye would not go vp, but were disobedient vnto the commandement of the Lord your God,

27 et vous murmurâtes dans vos tentes et vous dîtes: "C’Est par haine pour nous que l’Éternel nous a fait sortir de l’Egypte! C’Est pour nous livrer au pouvoir de l’Amorréen, pour nous anéantir!

And murmured in your tentes, and sayd, Because the Lord hated vs, therefore hath hee brought vs out of the land of Egypt, to deliuer vs into the hand of the Amorites, and to destroy vs.

28 Où veut-on que nous allions? Nos frères ont abattu notre courage, en disant: Il y a là une race plus grande et plus forte que la nôtre, des villes considérables et fortifiées jusqu’au ciel, et nous y avons même vu des enfants d’Anak."

Whither shall we go vp? our brethren haue discouraged our hearts, saying, The people is greater, and taller then we: the cities are great and walled vp to heauen: and moreouer we haue seene the sonnes of the Anakims there.

29 Et je vous répondis: "Vous n’avez pas à trembler ni à les craindre.

But I sayd vnto you, Dread not, nor be afrayd of them.

30 L’Éternel, votre Dieu, qui marche à votre tête, lui-même combattra pour vous, tout comme il l’a fait contre l’Egypte, sous vos yeux,

The Lord your God, who goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did vnto you in Egypt before your eyes,

31 et aussi dans ce désert, où tu as vu l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te porter comme un père porte son fils, durant tout le trajet que vous avez fait, jusqu’à votre arrivée en ce lieu-ci.

And in the wildernesse, where thou hast seene how the Lord thy God bare thee, as a man doeth beare his sonne, in all the way which ye haue gone, vntill ye came vnto this place.

32 Et dans cette circonstance vous ne vous confieriez pas en l’Éternel, votre Dieu!

Yet for all this ye did not beleeue the Lord your God,

33 Lui qui précède votre marche, choisissant les lieux propices à vos stations, la nuit par le feu, pour vous montrer la route à suivre, et le jour par la nuée!"

Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tentes in, in fire by night, that ye might see what way to goe, and in a cloude by day.

34 L’Éternel entendit vos paroles, et il s’irrita, et il proféra ce serment:

Then the Lord heard the voyce of your wordes, and was wroth, and sware, saying,

35 "Si jamais un seul de ces hommes, de cette génération mauvaise, voit l’heureux pays que j’ai juré de donner à vos pères!…

Surely there shall not one of these men of this froward generation, see that good land, which I sware to giue vnto your fathers,

36 Seul, Caleb, fils de Yefounné, le verra; ce sol qu’il a foulé, je le donnerai à lui et à ses enfants, parce qu’il est resté fidèle au Seigneur."

Saue Caleb the sonne of Iephunneh: he shall see it, and to him will I giue the land that he hath troden vpon, and to his children, because he hath constantly followed the Lord.

37 Contre moi aussi l’Éternel s’irrita à cause de vous, au point de dire: "Tu n’y entreras pas, toi non plus!"

Also the Lord was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not goe in thither,

38 Josué, fils de Noun, qui est à ton service, c’est lui qui doit y entrer: affermis son courage, car c’est lui qui en donnera possession à Israël.

But Ioshua the sonne of Nun which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: incourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherite it.

39 Et vos familles, dont vous avez dit: "Elles nous seront ravies", et vos enfants, qui ne discernent pas encore le bien du mal, ceux-là entreront dans ce pays; je le leur donnerai à eux et ils le posséderont.

Moreouer, your children, which ye sayd should be a praye, and your sonnes, which in that day had no knowledge betweene good and euill, they shall go in thither, and vnto them wil I giue it, and they shall possesse it.

40 Pour vous, changez de direction et acheminez-vous vers le désert, du côté de la mer des Joncs."

But as for you, turne backe, and take your iourney into the wildernesse by the way of the red Sea.

41 Alors vous vous écriâtes, en me disant: "Nous avons péché contre le Seigneur; nous voulons monter et combattre, comme nous l’a ordonné le Seigneur, notre Dieu." Et chacun de vous ceignit ses armes et vous vous disposâtes à gravir la montagne.

Then ye answered and sayd vnto me, We haue sinned against the Lord, we wil go vp, and fight, according to all that the Lord our God hath commanded vs: and ye armed you euery man to the warre, and were ready to goe vp into the mountaine.

42 Mais l’Éternel me parla ainsi: "Dis-leur: Ne montez pas, ne livrez point de combat, car je ne serai point avec vous; ne vous exposez pas aux coups de vos ennemis."

But the Lord said vnto me, Say vnto them, Goe not vp, neither fight, (for I am not among you) least ye fall before your enemies.

43 Je vous le redis, mais vous n’en tîntes pas compte; vous désobéîtes à la parole du Seigneur et vous eûtes la témérité de vous avancer sur la montagne.

And when I told you, ye would not heare, but rebelled against the commandement of the Lord, and were presumptuous, and went vp into the mountaine.

44 L’Amorréen, qui occupe cette montagne, marcha à votre rencontre; et ils vous poursuivirent comme font les abeilles, et ils vous taillèrent en pièces dans Séir, jusqu’à Horma.

Then the Amorites which dwelt in that mountaine came out against you, and chased you (as bees vse to doe) and destroied you in Seir, euen vnto Hormah.

45 De retour, vous pleurâtes devant le Seigneur; mais le Seigneur fut insensible à vos cris, il ne vous écouta point.

And when ye came againe, ye wept before the Lord, but the Lord would not heare your voyce, nor incline his eares vnto you.

46 Vous demeurâtes de longs jours à Kadêch… Vous savez combien de jours vous y avez demeuré.

So ye abode in Kadesh a long time, according to the time that ye had remained before.
