Daniel 1
1 Dans la troisième année du règne de Joïakim, roi de Juda, Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, marcha contre Jérusalem et l’assiégea.
In the thirde yeere of the reigne of Iehoiakim king of Iudah, came Nebuchad-nezzar King of Babel vnto Ierusalem and besieged it.
2 Le Seigneur livra en son pouvoir Joïakim, roi de Juda, et une partie des vases de la maison de Dieu, qu’il transporta au pays de Sennaar, dans le temple de sa divinité; c’est dans le trésor de son dieu qu’il déposa ces vases.
And ye Lord gaue Iehoiakim king of Iudah into his hand; with parte of the vessels of the house of God, which he caryed into the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and he brought the vessels into his gods treasurie.
3 Le roi ordonna à Achpenaz, chef de ses eunuques, d’amener, d’entre les enfants d’Israël, issus de la lignée royale et des familles nobles,
And the King spake vnto Ashpenaz the master of his Eunuches, that he shoulde bring certeine of the children of Israel, of the Kings seede, and of the princes:
4 des jeunes gens, exempts de tout défaut corporel, beaux de figure, initiés à toute sagesse, doués d’intelligence, versés dans les connaissances et qui pourraient être admis dans le palais du roi, et de leur enseigner l’écriture et la langue des Chaldéens.
Children in whome was no blemish, but well fauoured, and instruct in all wisedome, and well seene in knowledge, and able to vtter knowledge, and such as were able to stande in the kings palace, and whome they might teach the learning, and the tongue of the Caldeans.
5 Le roi leur assigna pour leur entretien journalier des plats de la table royale et du vin qui lui servait de boisson, de façon à les éduquer durant trois années, puis à en attacher quelques-uns au service du roi.
And the King appointed them prouision euery day of a portion of the Kings meate, and and of the wine, which he dranke, so nourishing them three yeere, that at the ende thereof, they might stande before the King.
6 Au nombre des enfants de Juda qui se trouvaient parmi eux figuraient Daniel, Hanania, Misaël et Azaria.
Nowe among these were certeine of the children of Iudah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.
7 Le chef des eunuques leur attribua de nouveaux noms; il appela Daniel Beltchaçar, Hanania Chadrac, Misaël Mêchac et Azaria Abêd-Nego.
Vnto whome the chiefe of the Eunuches gaue other names: for hee called Daniel, Belteshazzar, and Hananiah, Shadrach, and Mishael, Meshach, and Azariah, Abednego.
8 Or Daniel prit la résolution de ne pas se souiller par les plats du roi et le vin qui lui servait de boisson; il insista donc auprès du chef des eunuques pour n’avoir pas à se souiller.
But Daniel had determined in his heart, that hee woulde not defile him selfe with the portion of the Kings meate, nor with the wine which he dranke: therefore he required the chiefe of the Eunuches that he might not defile himselfe.
9 Dieu fit trouver à Daniel grâce et mansuétude auprès du chef des eunuques.
(Nowe God had brought Daniel into fauour, and tender loue with the chiefe of the Eunuches)
10 Le chef des eunuques dit à Daniel: "Je redoute le roi, mon maître, qui a réglé votre nourriture et votre boisson car s’il devait trouver votre mine plus chétive que celle des autres jeunes gens dans votre condition, vous m’en feriez responsable sur ma tête aux yeux du roi."
And the chiefe of the Eunuches sayd vnto Daniel, I feare my lord the King, who hath appointed your meate and your drinke: therefore if he see your faces worse liking then the other children, which are of your sort, then shall you make me lose mine head vnto the King.
11 Daniel répliqua au gouverneur que le chef des eunuques avait préposé à Daniel, Hanania, Misaël et Azaria:
Then sayd Daniel to Melzar, whome the chiefe of the Eunuches had set ouer Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12 "De grâce, mets tes serviteurs à l’épreuve pendant une dizaine de jours: qu’on ne nous donne que des légumes secs à manger et de l’eau à boire.
Proue thy seruants, I beseeche thee, ten dayes, and let them giue vs pulse to eate, and water to drinke.
13 Puis, tu examineras notre mine et la mine des jeunes gens nourris des mets du roi, et, selon ce que tu verras, tu agiras à l’égard de tes serviteurs."
Then let our countenances bee looked vpon before thee, and the countenances of the children that eate of the portion of the Kings meate: and as thou seest, deale with thy seruantes.
14 II leur céda sur ce point et les mit à l’épreuve pendant dix jours.
So hee consented to them in this matter, an proued them ten dayes.
15 Au bout de ces dix jours, leur mine parut meilleure et leur embonpoint plus marqué que ceux de tous les jeunes gens nourris des mets du roi.
And at the end of ten dayes, their countenances appeared fayrer, and in better liking then all the childrens, which did eate the portion of the Kings meate.
16 Dès lors, le gouverneur enlevait leurs plats et le vin qu’on leur servait à boire, et leur donnait des légumes secs.
Thus Melzar tooke away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drinke, and gaue them pulse.
17 Et à ces jeunes gens, à tous les quatre, Dieu avait accordé le savoir et la faculté de comprendre toute écriture et toute science; quant à Daniel, il possédait l’intelligence de toute vision et des songes.
As for these foure children, God gaue them knowledge, and vnderstanding in al learning and wisedome: also he gaue Daniel vnderstanding of all visions and dreames.
18 Au terme du délai que le roi avait fixé pour les lui amener, le chef des eunuques les introduisit auprès de Nabuchodonosor.
Nowe when the time was expired, that the King had appoynted to bring them in, the chiefe of the Eunuches brought them before Nebuchad-nezzar.
19 Le roi s’entretint avec eux: parmi tous les jeunes gens il ne s’en trouvait pas de comparables à Daniel, Hanania, Misaël et Azaria; ils furent donc attachés au service du roi.
And the King communed with them: and among them al was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stoode they before the king.
20 Et sur toute question d’ingénieuse sagesse que le roi leur posait, il les trouvait dix fois supérieurs à tous les devins et magiciens qui vivaient dans tout son royaume.
And in all matters of wisedome, and vnderstanding that the King enquired of them, hee founde them tenne times better then all the inchanters and astrologians, that were in all his realme.
21 Daniel alla ainsi jusqu’à la première année de Cyrus.
And Daniel was vnto the first yeere of king Cyrus.
