2 Samuel 15

1 Quelque temps après, Absalon se procura un char et des chevaux, avec cinquante coureurs qui le précédaient.

And it came to pass after this that Abessalom prepared for himself chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him.

2 Chaque matin, Absalon se tenait au bord de la route qui conduisait à la porte, et toutes les fois qu’un homme ayant un procès se rendait auprès du roi pour obtenir justice, Absalon l’appelait et disait: "De quelle ville es-tu? A quoi l’on répondait: "De telle des tribus d’Israël."

And Abessalom rose early, and stood by the side of the way of the gate: and it came to pass that every man who had a cause, came to the king for judgment, and Abessalom cried to him, and said to him, Of what city are you? And he said, Your servant [is] of one of the tribes of Israel.

3 Absalon répliquait: "Vois, ta cause est bonne et juste, mais on ne t’écoutera pas chez le roi.

And Abessalom said to him, See, your affairs [are] right and clear, yet you have no one [appointed] of the king to hear you.

4 Ah! continuait Absalon, que ne suis-je institué juge en ce pays! Quiconque aurait un différend, un procès, s’adresserait à moi, et je lui ferais justice."

And Abessalom said, O that one would make me a judge in the land; then every man who had a dispute or a cause would come to me, and I would judge him!

5 Et lorsqu’un individu s’approchait pour se prosterner devant lui, il lui tendait la main, l’étreignait et l’embrassait.

And it came to pass when a man came near to do him obeisance, that he stretched out his hand, and took hold of him, and kissed him.

6 Absalon agissait de la sorte avec tout Israélite venant demander justice au roi, et il capta ainsi le cœur des gens d’Israël.

And Abessalom did after this manner to all Israel that came to the king for judgment; and Abessalom gained the hearts of the men of Israel.

7 A la fin de la quarantième année, Absalon dit au roi: "Permets-moi d’aller à Hébron, m’acquitter d’un vœu que j’ai fait à l’Eternel;

And it came to pass after forty years, that Abessalom said to his father, I will go now, and pay my vows, which I vowed to the Lord in Chebron.

8 car ton serviteur, pendant son séjour à Guechour, en Syrie, a prononcé le vœu suivant: Si l’Eternel me ramène à Jérusalem, je ferai acte d’adoration au Seigneur.

For your servant vowed a vow when I lived at Gedsur in Syria, saying, If the Lord should indeed restore me to Jerusalem, then will I serve the Lord.

9 Va en paix", répondit le roi. Et il partit et se rendit à Hébron.

And the king said to him, Go in peace. And he arose and went to Chebron.

10 Puis Absalon envoya des émissaires dans toutes les tribus d’Israël avec ce message: "Quand vous entendrez le son du cor, vous direz: Absalon a été proclamé roi à Hébron."

And Abessalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, When you hear the sound of the trumpet, then shall you say, Abessalom is become king in Chebron.

11 Avec Absalon étaient partis de Jérusalem deux cents hommes, invités par lui et le suivant de bonne foi, car ils ne savaient rien de l’affaire.

And there went with Abessalom two hundred chosen men from Jerusalem; and they went in their simplicity, and knew not anything.

12 Absalon, tandis qu’il offrait les sacrifices, envoya quérir Ahitofel le Ghilonite, conseiller de David, dans sa ville de Ghilo; la conspiration devint puissante, et une foule de plus en plus nombreuse se joignit à Absalon.

And Abessalom sent to Achitophel the Theconite, the counsellor of David, from his city, from Gola, where he was sacrificing: and there was a strong conspiracy; and the people with Abessalom were increasingly numerous.

13 Un messager vint en donner avis à David, en disant: "Le cœur des gens d’Israël s’est prononcé pour Absalon."

And there came a messenger to David, saying, the heart of the men of Israel is gone after Abessalom.

14 Alors David dit à tous ses serviteurs, qui étaient avec lui à Jérusalem: "Debout, fuyons! Nous ne pouvons autrement échapper à Absalon. Hâtez-vous de me suivre, de peur qu’il ne nous gagne de vitesse, ne précipite notre malheur et ne livre à l’épée les habitants de la ville."

And David said to all his servants who were with him in Jerusalem, Rise, and let us flee, for we have no refuge from Abessalom: make haste and go, lest he overtake us speedily, and bring evil upon us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.

15 Les serviteurs du roi lui répondirent: "Quoi que décide mon seigneur le roi, tes serviteurs sont prêts."

And the king's servants said to the king, In all things which our lord the king chooses, behold [we are] your servants.

16 Le roi sortit donc, suivi de toute sa maison, et laissa dix femmes, ses concubines, pour garder le palais.

And the king and all his house went out on foot: and the king left ten women of his concubines to keep the house.

17 Le roi partit, avec tout le peuple à sa suite, et ils s’arrêtèrent à Beth-Hammerhak.

And the king and all his servants went out on foot; and abode in a distant house.

18 Tous ses serviteurs défilèrent devant lui, tous les Kerêthi et Pelêthi; pareillement tous les Ghittéens, les six cents hommes venus de Gath sous ses ordres, défilèrent devant le roi.

And all his servants passed on by his side, and every Chelethite, and every Phelethite, and they stood by the olive tree in the wilderness: and all the people marched near him, and all his court, and all the men of might, and all the men of war, six hundred: and they were present at his side: and every Chelethite, and every Phelethite, and all the six hundred Gittites that came on foot out of Geth, and they went on before the king.

19 Le roi dit à Ittaï le Ghittéen: "Pourquoi viens-tu, toi aussi, avec nous? Rebrousse chemin et demeure avec le roi, car tu es étranger; tu peux d’ailleurs émigrer dans ton propre pays.

And the king said to Ethi, the Gittite, Why do you also go with us? return, and dwell with the king, for you are a stranger, and you has come forth as a sojourner out of your place.

20 Tu es arrivé d’hier, et aujourd’hui je te ferais partager notre vie errante, allant moi-même je ne sais où! Retourne plutôt et ramène tes frères avec toi, ce sera charité et justice!"

Whereas you came yesterday, shall I today cause you to travel with us, and shall you [thus] change your place? you did come forth yesterday, and today shall I set you in motion to go along with us? I indeed will go wherever I may go: return then, and cause your brethren to return with you, and may the Lord deal mercifully and truly with you.

21 Ittaï répondit au roi: "Par le Dieu vivant et par la vie du roi mon maître! Partout où sera le roi mon maître, pour la mort ou pour la vie, là sera ton serviteur."

And Ethi answered the king and said, [As] the Lord lives and as my lord the king lives, in the place wherever my lord shall be, whether it be for death or life, there shall your servant be.

22 David dit à Ittaï: "Va donc et avance." Et Ittaï le Ghittéen avança, avec tous ses hommes et tous les enfants qui, l’accompagnaient.

And the king said to Ethi, Come and pass over with me. So Ethi the Gittite and the king passed over, and all his servants, and all the multitude with him.

23 Tout le pays pleurait bruyamment tandis que cette multitude passait. Le roi traversa le torrent de Cédron, et le peuple s’avança sur la route qui mène au désert.

And all the country wept with a loud voice. And all the people passed by over the brook of Kedron; and the king crossed the brook Kedron: and all the people and the king passed on toward the way of the wilderness.

24 Vint aussi Çadok avec tous les Lévites, portant l’arche d’alliance du Seigneur; on déposa l’arche divine à terre pendant qu’Ebiathar montait, jusqu’à ce que le peuple eût achevé de quitter la ville.

And behold also Sadoc, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of the Lord from Baethar: and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had passed out of the city.

25 Mais le roi dit à Çadok: "Fais rentrer l’arche de Dieu dans la ville. Si je trouve faveur aux yeux du Seigneur, il me ramènera et me la fera revoir ainsi que la demeure où elle réside.

And the king said to Sadoc, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I should find favor in the eyes of the Lord, then will he bring me back, and he will show me it and its beauty.

26 Que s’il dit: "Je ne veux plus de toi," je suis prêt; qu’il me traite comme il lui plaira.

But if he should say thus, I have no pleasure in you; behold, [here] I am, let him do to me according to that which is good in his eyes.

27 Vois-tu, dit le roi au pontife Çadok, retourne en paix à la ville, et que ton fils Ahimaaç et Jonathan, fils d’Ebiathar, vos deux fils, vous accompagnent.

And the king said to Sadoc the priest, Behold, you shall return to the city in peace, and Achimaas your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar, your two sons with you.

28 Voyez, moi je m’attarderai dans les plaines du désert, attendant qu’un message vienne m’informer de votre part."

Behold, I continue in arms in Araboth of the desert, until there come tidings from you to report to me.

29 Et Çadok et Ebiathar ramenèrent l’arche de Dieu à Jérusalem, où ils restèrent.

So Sadoc and Abiathar brought back the ark of the Lord to Jerusalem, and it continued there.

30 Cependant David montait la pente des Oliviers, s’avançant en pleurant, la tête voilée et nu-pieds; et tout le peuple à sa suite avait également la tête voilée et montait en pleurant.

And David went up by the ascent of [the mount of] Olives, ascending and weeping, and had his head covered, and went barefooted: and all the people that were with him covered [every] man his head; and they went up, ascending and weeping.

31 On apprit à David qu’Ahitofel était parmi les conjurés réunis autour d’Absalon; sur quoi il dit: "Daigne confondre, Seigneur, les desseins d’Ahitofel!"

And it was reported to David, saying, Achitophel also [is] among the conspirators with Abessalom. And David said, O Lord my God, disconcert, I pray you, the counsel of Achitophel.

32 Comme David arrivait au sommet, où il devait se prosterner devant le Seigneur, voici venir à sa rencontre Houchaï l’Arkéen, la tunique déchirée, la tête couverte de poussière.

And David came as far as Ros, where he worshipped God: and behold, Chusi the chief friend of David came out to meet him, having tore his garment, and earth [was] upon his head.

33 David lui dit: "Si tu marches avec moi, tu seras pour moi une gêne.

And David said to him, If you should go over with me, then will you be a burden to me;

34 Mais si tu retournes à la ville et que tu dises à Absalon: O roi, je veux être ton serviteur; j’étais auparavant celui de ton père, maintenant je serai le tien, tu pourras anéantir à mon profit les desseins d’Ahitofel.

but if you shall return to the city, and shall say to Abessalom, Your brethren are passed over, and the king your father is passed over after me: and now I am your servant, O king, suffer me to live: at one time even of late I was the servant of your father, and now I [am] your humble servant—so shall you disconcert for me, the counsel of Achitophel.

35 Et puis, n’y aura-t-il pas là avec toi Çadok et Ebiathar, les pontifes? Or, tout ce que tu apprendras de la maison du roi, tu en informeras les pontifes Çadok et Ebiathar.

And, behold, [there are] there with you Sadoc and Abiathar the priests; and it shall be that every word that you shall hear of the house of the king, you shall report it to Sadoc and Abiathar the priests.

36 Là aussi, avec eux, sont leurs deux fils, celui de Çadok, Ahimaaç, et celui d’Ebiathar, Jonathan: vous me transmettrez par eux toute chose dont vous aurez connaissance."

Behold, [there are] there with them their two sons, Achimaas the son of Sadoc, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar; and by them you shall report to me every word which you shall hear.

37 Houchaï, l’ami de David, se rendit donc à la ville, comme Absalon allait entrer à Jérusalem.

So Chusi the friend of David went into the city, and Abessalom was lately gone into Jerusalem.
