2 Samuel 13

1 Après ces faits, une sœur d’Absalon, fils de David, qui était belle et se nommait Thamar, inspira de l’amour à Amnon, autre fils de David.

And it happened after this that Abessalom the son of David had a very beautiful sister, and her name [was] Themar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.

2 Amnon souffrit au point d’en devenir malade, à cause de sa sœur Thamar; car elle était vierge, et il parut impossible à Amnon de rien tenter contre elle.

And Amnon was distressed even to sickness, because of Themar his sister; for she was a virgin, and it seemed very difficult for Amnon to do anything to her.

3 Or, Amnon avait un ami nommé Jonadab, fils de Chimea le frère de David, et ce Jonadab était un homme très avisé.

And Amnon had a friend, and his name [was] Jonadab, the son of Samaa the brother of David: and Jonadab [was] a very cunning man.

4 Il lui dit: "D’Où vient que toi, fils de roi, tu dépéris ainsi de jour en jour? Ne me le diras-tu pas?" Amnon lui répondit: "J’Aime Thamar, la sœur d’Absalon mon frère."

And he said to him, What ails you that you are thus weak? O son of the king, morning by morning? will you not tell me? and Ammon said, I love Themar the sister of my brother Abessalom.

5 Jonadab lui dit: "Mets-toi au lit en simulant une maladie. Ton père viendra te visiter, et tu lui diras: "Permets que ma sœur Thamar vienne me donner à manger et qu’elle accommode le plat devant moi, pour que je le voie faire et l’accepte de sa main."

And Jonadab said to him, Lie upon your bed, and make yourself sick, and your father shall come in to see you; and you shall say to him, Let, I pray you, Themar my sister come, and feed me with morsels, and let her prepare food before my eyes, that I may see and eat at her hands.

6 Amnon se mit au lit, faisant le malade. Le roi étant allé le voir, Amnon lui dit: "Permets que ma sœur Thamar vienne ici, qu’elle prépare sous mes yeux deux gâteaux, pour que je les mange de sa main."

So Ammon lay down, and made himself sick; and the king came in to see him: and Amnon said to the king, Let, I pray you, my sister Themar come to me, and make a couple of cakes in my sight, and I will eat them at her hand.

7 David envoya dire à Thamar dans son appartement: "Va, je te prie, dans la demeure de ton frère Amnon, et prépare-lui le repas."

And David sent to Themar to the house, saying, Go now to your brother's house, and dress him food.

8 Thamar alla dans la demeure d’Amnon, son frère, qui était couché, prit de la pâte, la pétrit, en confectionna des gâteaux sous ses yeux et les fit cuire.

And Themar went to the house of her brother Amnon, and he [was] lying down: and she took the dough and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and baked the cakes.

9 Puis elle prit la poêle et en répandit le contenu devant lui; mais il refusa d’en manger et dit: "Faites sortir tout le monde de chez moi!" Et chacun se retira.

And she took the frying pan and poured them out before him, but he would not eat. And Amnon said, Send out every man from about me. And they removed every man from about him.

10 Amnon dit alors à Thamar: "Apporte le plat dans la chambre intérieure, que je le reçoive de tes mains." Et Thamar prit les gâteaux faits par elle et les porta à son frère Amnon à l’intérieur.

And Amnon said to Themar, Bring in the food into the closet, and I will eat of your hand. And Themar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them to her brother Amnon into the chamber.

11 Comme elle les lui présentait à manger, il la saisit en lui disant: "Viens coucher avec moi, ma sœur.

And she brought [them] to him to eat, and he caught hold of her, and said to her, Come, lie with me, my sister.

12 Non, mon frère, dit-elle, ne me fais pas violence, ce n’est pas ainsi qu’on agit en Israël. Ne commets pas une telle indignité!

And she said to him, Nay, my brother, do not humble me, for it ought not to be so done in Israel; do not this folly.

13 Et moi, où porterais-je ma honte? Veux-tu donc être parmi les plus vils en Israël! Que ne parles-tu plutôt au roi? Il ne refuserait pas de m’unir à toi."

And I, whither shall I remove my reproach? and you shall be as one of the fools in Israel. And now, speak, I pray you, to the king, for surely he will not keep me from you.

14 Mais il ne voulut pas écouter sa prière, il usa de force à son égard, lui fit violence et la déshonora.

But Amnon would not listen to her voice; and he prevailed against her, and humbled her, and lay with her.

15 Ensuite Amnon conçut une très grande haine contre elle, et cette haine qu’il lui voua surpassait de beaucoup l’amour qu’il avait éprouvé. "Lève-toi, sors d’ici!" lui dit-il.

Then Amnon hated her with very great hatred; for the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her, for the last wickedness was greater than the first: and Amnon said to her, Rise, and be gone.

16 Elle lui en fit des reproches: "Ce méfait de me renvoyer est plus grave encore que celui dont tu t’es rendu coupable;" mais il ne voulut pas l’écouter.

And Themar spoke to him concerning this great mischief, greater, [said she], than the other that you did me, to send me away: but Amnon would not listen to her voice.

17 Il appela le jeune homme qui le servait et dit: "Qu’on me débarrasse de cette femme en la jetant dans la rue, et qu’on ferme la porte sur elle!"

And he called his servant who had charge of the house, and said to him, Put now this [woman] out from me, and shut the door after her.

18 Or, elle portait une tunique à manches, comme sont les robes dont se revêtent les vierges filles du roi. Le serviteur la fit donc sortir et ferma la porte sur elle.

And she had on her a variegated robe, for so were the king's daughters that were virgins attired in their apparel: and his servant led her forth, and shut the door after her.

19 Thamar se couvrit la tête de cendres, déchira la tunique à manches qu’elle portait, puis, les mains jointes sur sa tète, s’en alla en poussant des cris.

And Themar took ashes, and put them on her head; and she tore the variegated garment that was upon her: and she laid her hands on her head, and went crying continually.

20 Absalon, son frère, lui dit: "C’Est ton frère Amnon qui a été avec toi! Or, ça, ma sœur, garde le silence, c’est ton frère; ne prends pas trop la chose à cœur." Thamar demeura, accablée de honte, dans la maison d’Absalon, son frère.

And Abessalom her brother said to her, Has your brother Amnon been with you? now then, my sister, be silent, for he is your brother: be not careful to mention this matter. So Themar lived as a widow in the house of her brother Abessalom.

21 Le roi David, ayant appris tous ces faits, en fut profondément affligé.

And king David heard of all these things, and was very angry; but he did not grieve the spirit of his son Amnon, because be loved him, for he was his firstborn.

22 Pour Absalon, il n’adressa pas une parole, mauvaise ou bonne, à Amnon, car il l’avait pris en haine à cause de la violence qu’il avait fait subir à sa sœur Thamar.

And Abessalom spoke not to Amnon, good or bad, because Abessalom hated Amnon, on account of his humbling his sister Themar.

23 Deux ans après, on faisait la tonte du troupeau d’AbsaIon à Baal-Haçor, près d’Ephraïm; Absalon invita tous les fils du roi.

And it came to pass at the end of two whole years, that they were shearing [sheep] for Abessalom in Belasor near Ephraim: and Abessalom invited all the king's sons.

24 Absalon vint trouver le roi et lui dit: "Voici, ton serviteur a les tondeurs chez lui: de grâce, que le roi et ses officiers viennent chez ton serviteur!"

And Abessalom came to the king, and said, Behold, your servant has a sheep-shearing; let now the king and his servants go with your servant.

25 Le roi répondit à Absalon: "Oh! non, mon fils, n’y allons pas tous, pour ne pas t’être à charge." Il insista encore, mais David refusa d’y aller et lui donna sa bénédiction.

And the king said to Abessalom, Nay, my son, let us not all go, and let us not be burdensome to you. And he pressed him; but he would not go, but blessed him.

26 Absalon reprit: "Si tu ne veux pas, que du moins Amnon, mon frère, nous accompagne. Pourquoi doit-il t’accompagner?" dit le roi.

And Abessalom said to him, And if not, let I pray you, my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said to him, Why should he go with you?

27 Mais Absalon le pressa tellement qu’il laissa partir avec lui Amnon et tous les princes.

And Abessalom pressed him, and he sent with him Amnon and all the king's sons; and Abessalom made a banquet like the banquet of the king.

28 Or, Absalon donna cet ordre à ses serviteurs: "Quand vous verrez Amnon mis en gaîté par le vin et que je vous dirai: "Frappez Amnon", mettez-le à mort sans crainte: n’est-ce pas moi qui vous l’aurai ordonné? Courage donc, et soyez braves!"

And Abessalom charged his servants, saying, Mark when the heart of Amnon shall be merry with wine, and I shall say to you, Strike Amnon, and kill him: fear not; for is it not I that command you? Be courageous, and be valiant.

29 Les serviteurs d’Absalon traitèrent Amnon comme il l’avait ordonné; sur quoi, tous les princes se levèrent et s’enfuirent, chacun sur son mulet."

And the servants of Abessalom did to Amnon as Abessalom commanded them: and all the sons of the king rose up, and they mounted every man his mule, and fled.

30 Tandis qu’ils étaient en route, David reçut la nouvelle qu’Absalon avait fait périr tous les fils du roi sans en épargner un seul.

And it came to pass, when they were in the way, that a report came to David, saying, Abessalom has slain all the king's sons, and there is not one of them left.

31 Le roi se leva, déchira ses vêtements, et s’étendit par terre; tous ses serviteurs restèrent debout, les vêtements déchirés.

Then the king arose, and tore his garments, and lay upon the ground: and all his servants that were standing round him tore their garments.

32 Mais Jonadab, fils de Chimea, le frère de David, prit la parole et lui dit: "Ne dis pas, seigneur, qu’on a fait mourir tous les jeunes princes! Amnon seul est mort, la chose ayant été résolue par la volonté d’Absalon depuis le jour où avait été violée Thamar, sa sœur.

And Jonadab the son of Samaa brother of David, answered and said, Let not my Lord the king say that he has slain all the young men the sons of the king, for Amnon only of them all is dead; for he was appointed [to death] by the mouth of Abessalom from the day that he humbled his sister Themar.

33 Donc, que le roi mon maître ne prenne pas la chose à cœur, en croyant que tous les princes sont morts; car Amnon seul a péri."

And now let not my lord the king take the matter to heart, saying, All the king's sons are dead: for Amnon only of them is dead.

34 Absalon prit la fuite. Le serviteur placé en surveillance, levant les yeux, vit une foule considérable venant de la route s’avancer derrière lui, par le flanc de la montagne.

And Abessalom escaped: and the young man the watchman, lifted up his eyes, and looked; and, behold, much people went in the way behind him from the side of the mountain in the descent: and the watchman came and told the king, and said, I have seen men by the way of Oronen, by the side of the mountain.

35 "Eh bien! dit Jonadab au roi, les princes sont arrivés; ce que ton serviteur a dit était vrai."

And Jonadab said to the king, Behold, the king's sons are present: according to the word of your servant, so has it happened.

36 Comme il achevait de parler, les fils du roi arrivèrent, élevant la voix et pleurant; le roi aussi et tous ses serviteurs pleurèrent; c’étaient de grands sanglots.

And it came to pass when he had finished speaking, that, behold, the king's sons came, and lifted up their voices and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept with a very great weeping.

37 Cependant Absalon, en fuite, s’était rendu chez Talmaï, fils d’Ammihoud, roi de Guechour, et David gardait toujours le deuil de son fils.

But Abessalom fled, and went to Tholmi son of Emiud the king of Gedsur to the land of Chamaachad: and king David mourned for his son continually.

38 Absalon, s’étant réfugié à Guechour, y passa trois années.

So Abessalom fled, and departed to Gedsur, and was there three years.

39 Le roi David renonça à poursuivre Absalon, s’étant consolé de la mort d’Amnon.

And king David ceased to go out after Abessalom, for he was comforted concerning Amnon, touching his death.
