2 Chroniques 24
1 Joas avait sept ans quand il devint roi, et il régna quarante ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s’appelait Cibya, de Bersabée.
Ioash was seuen yere olde, when he began to reigne, and he reigned fourty yeere in Ierusalem: and his mothers name was Zibiah of Beer-sheba.
2 Joas fit ce qui plaît au Seigneur, durant toute la vie de Joïada, le prêtre.
And Ioash did vprightly in the sight of the Lord, all the dayes of Iehoiada the Priest.
3 Joïada lui fit épouser deux femmes, et il engendra des fils et des filles.
And Iehoiada tooke him two wiues, and he begate sonnes and daughters.
4 Plus tard, Joas conçut le projet de restaurer la maison du Seigneur.
And afterward it came into Ioash mind, to renew the house of the Lord.
5 Il réunit prêtres et Lévites et leur dit: "Allez visiter les villes de Juda, recueillez de l’argent dans tout Israël, pour réparer la maison de votre Dieu, d’année en année, et accélérez la chose!" Mais les Lévites n’y mirent aucun empressement.
And he assembled the Priests and the Leuites, and said to them, Goe out vnto the cities of Iudah, and gather of all Israel money to repaire the house of your God, from yeere to yeere, and haste the thing: but the Leuites hasted not.
6 Alors le roi manda Joïada, le chef des prêtres, et lui dit: "Pourquoi n’exiges-tu pas des Lévites qu’ils fassent rentrer de Juda et de Jérusalem l’impôt établi par Moïse, serviteur de l’Eternel, sur l’assemblée d’Israël, en faveur de la tente du Statut?
Therefore the King called Iehoiada, the chiefe, and said vnto him, Why hast thou not required of the Leuites to bring in out of Iudah and Ierusalem the taxe of Moses the seruant of the Lord, and of the Congregation of Israel, for the Tabernacle of the testimonie?
7 Car l’impie Athalie et ses fils ont laissé tomber en ruine la maison de Dieu, et, de plus, ils ont affecté aux Bealim tous les objets sacrés du temple de l’Eternel."
For wicked Athaliah, and her children brake vp the house of God: and all the things that were dedicate for the house of the Lord, did they bestowe vpon Baalim.
8 Sur l’ordre du roi, on confectionna une caisse, qu’on plaça à l’entrée de la maison de l’Eternel, extérieurement,
Therefore the King commanded, and they made a chest, and set it at the gate of the house of the Lord without.
9 et l’on publia un avis dans Juda et Jérusalem, à l’effet de faire apporter à l’intention de l’Eternel l’impôt établi par Moïse, serviteur de Dieu, sur Israël dans le désert.
And they made proclamation thorow Iudah and Ierusalem, to bring vnto the Lord the taxe of Moses the seruant of God, layde vpon Israel in the wildernesse.
10 Tous les seigneurs et le peuple, remplis de joie, apportèrent leur offrande et la jetèrent dans la caisse, tous tant qu’ils étaient.
And all the princes and all the people reioyced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, vntill they had finished.
11 Et chaque fois que la caisse était remise aux préposés royaux par les soins des Lévites, et que l’on constatait qu’elle contenait beaucoup d’argent, le secrétaire du roi et le fonctionnaire désigné par le pontife suprême venaient vider la caisse, puis on la remportait pour la remettre en place. Ainsi procédait-on jour par jour, et l’on recueillit de l’argent en quantité.
And when it was time, they brought the chest vnto the Kings officer by the hand of the Leuites: and when they saw that there was much siluer, then the Kings Scribe (and one appoynted by the hie Priest) came and emptied the chest, and tooke it, and caried it to his place againe: thus they did day by day, and gathered siluer in abundance.
12 Cet argent, le roi et Joïada le passèrent aux directeurs des travaux de restauration de la maison de l’Eternel: ceux-ci engagèrent des tailleurs de pierre et des charpentiers pour restaurer le temple du Seigneur, ainsi que des artistes travaillant le fer et le cuivre pour en faire les réparations.
And the King and Iehoiada gaue it to such as did the labour and worke in the house of the Lord, and hyred masons and carpenters to repayre the house of the Lord: they gaue it also to workers of yron and brasse, to repayre the house of the Lord.
13 Les chefs des travaux firent diligence, et la besogne, sous leur direction, fut menée à bonne fin; ils rétablirent la maison de Dieu dans son état normal et la consolidèrent.
So the workemen wrought, and the worke amended through their hands: and they restored the house of God to his state, and strengthened it.
14 Leur tâche achevée, ils rapportèrent au roi et à Joïada ce qui restait de l’argent; on l’employa à confectionner des vases pour la maison de l’Eternel vases pour le culte, pour les sacrifices à offrir, écuelles, objets d’or et d’argent. On offrit des holocaustes dans le temple de l’Eternel, régulièrement tant que vécut Joïada.
And when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the siluer before the King and Iehoiada, and he made thereof vessels for the house of the Lord, euen vessels to minister, both morters and incense cuppes, and vessels of golde, and of siluer: and they offred burnt offrings in the house of the Lord continually all the dayes of Iehoiada.
15 Mais Joïada devint vieux, il fut rassasié de jours et mourut. Il avait cent trente ans lors de sa mort.
But Iehoiada waxed olde, and was ful of dayes and dyed. An hundreth and thirtie yeere olde was he when he dyed.
16 On l’ensevelit dans la cité de David, avec les rois, car il avait bien mérité d’Israël, de Dieu et de son temple.
And they buried him in the citie of Dauid with the kings, because he had done good in Israel, and toward God and his house.
17 Après la mort de Joïada, les seigneurs de Juda vinrent rendre hommage au roi, et celui-ci écouta leurs avis.
And after the death of Iehoiada, came the princes of Iudah, and did reuerence to the King, and the King hearkened vnto them.
18 Ils abandonnèrent la maison de l’Eternel, Dieu de leurs pères, adorèrent les statues d’Astarté et les idoles, de sorte que le courroux de Dieu éclata contre Juda et contre Jérusalem, en raison de leur coupable défection.
And they left the house of the Lord God of their fathers, and serued groues and idoles: and wrath came vpon Iudah and Ierusalem, because of this their trespasse.
19 Il envoya au milieu d’eux des prophètes pour les ramener à lui; mais leurs exhortations ne trouvèrent pas d’écho.
And God sent Prophets amog the, to bring them againe vnto the Lord: and they made protestation among them, but they would not heare.
20 C’Est alors que l’inspiration divine s’empara de Zacharie, fils du prêtre Joïada. Se plaçant de façon à dominer le peuple, il s’écria: "Ainsi parle Dieu: Pourquoi transgressez-vous les préceptes de l’Eternel et préparez-vous votre ruine? Puisque vous abandonnez l’Eternel, il vous abandonnera à votre tour."
And the Spirit of God came vpon Zechariah the sonne of Iehoiada the Priest, which stoode aboue the people, and sayde vnto them, Thus sayth God, Why transgresse ye the commandements of the Lord? surely ye shall not prosper: because ye haue forsaken the Lord, he also hath forsaken you.
21 On se concerta contre lui et on le tua à coups de pierre, sur l’ordre du roi, dans le parvis du temple du Seigneur.
Then they conspired against him and stoned him with stones at the commandement of the King, in the court of the house of the Lord.
22 Le roi Joas ne s’était pas souvenu, en faisant périr les fils, des bienfaits qu’il devait à Joïada, le père. En expirant, Zacharie avait dit: "Que l’Eternel voie, et demande compte!"
Thus Ioash the King remembred not the kindnesse which Iehoiada his father had done to him, but slewe his sonne. And when he dyed, he sayd, The Lord looke vpon it, and require it.
23 Une année étant révolue, une armée de Syriens marcha contre Joas; ils envahirent Juda et Jérusalem et exterminèrent, au milieu du peuple, tous les seigneurs qui étaient à sa tête; toutes leurs dépouilles, ils les firent parvenir au roi de Damas.
And when the yeere was out, the host of Aram came vp against him, and they came against Iudah and Ierusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoyle of them vnto the King of Damascus.
24 Bien que l’armée syrienne ne comptât qu’un petit nombre d’hommes, l’Eternel livra à sa merci une armée très considérable, parce qu’ils avaient abandonné l’Eternel, Dieu de leurs pères. Contre Joas également les ennemis exercèrent des sévices.
Though the armie of Aram came with a small company of men, yet the Lord deliuered a very great armie into their hand, because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers: and they gaue sentence against Ioash.
25 Quand ils se furent retirés de chez lui, le laissant en proie à une grave maladie, ses serviteurs formèrent un complot contre lui, pour venger le sang du fils de Joïada, le prêtre, et l’assassinèrent dans son lit. C’Est ainsi qu’il mourut; il fut enseveli dans la cité de David, mais non dans le tombeau des rois.
And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases) his owne seruants conspired against him for the blood of the children of Iehoiada the Priest, and slewe him on his bed, and he dyed, and they buryed him in the citie of Dauid: but they buryed him not in the sepulchres of the Kings.
26 Voici ceux qui avaient comploté contre lui: Zabad, fils de Chimeat, femme ammonite, et Yehozabad, fils de Chimrit, la Moabite.
And these are they that conspired against him, Zabad the sonne of Shimrath an Ammonitesse, and Iehozabad the sonne of Shimrith a Moabitesse.
27 Quant à ses fils, au grand nombre de prophéties dirigées contre lui et à la restauration de la maison de Dieu, ils sont mentionnés dans l’exposé du Livre des Rois. Il eut pour successeur son fils Amacia.
But his sonnes, and the summe of the taxe gathered by him, and the foundation of the house of God, behold, they are written in the storie of the booke of the Kings. And Amaziah his sonne reigned in his steade.
