2 Chroniques 19

1 Josaphat, roi de Juda, retourna sain et sauf chez lui, à Jérusalem.

And Jehoshaphat the king of Judah returned unto his own house in peace, to Jerusalem.

2 Jéhu, fils de Hanani, le Voyant, alla à sa rencontre et dit au roi Josaphat: "Devais-tu prêter ton concours à cet impie? Sont-ce les ennemis du Seigneur que tu aimes? Par là, tu as provoqué contre toi la colère de l’Eternel.

And there came out to meet him, Jehu son of Hanani, the seer, who said unto King Jehoshaphat, Unto the lawless, was it [right] to give help? and, on them who hate Yahweh, to bestow thy love? For this cause, therefore, is there wrath against thee, from before Yahweh;

3 Toutefois, des mérites réels se trouvent en toi, puisque tu as fait disparaître les Achêrot de ce pays, et que tu t’es appliqué, de cœur, à rechercher l’Eternel."

howbeit, good things, are found with thee, -for that thou hast consumed the Sacred Stems out of the land, and hast fixed thy heart to seek God.

4 Josaphat, après s’être réinstallé à Jérusalem, se remit à visiter les populations depuis Bersabée jusqu’aux monts d’Ephraïm et les ramena à l’Eternel, Dieu de leurs ancêtres.

So Jehoshaphat dwelt in Jerusalem, —and he again went forth among the people, from Beersheba as far as the hill country of Ephraim, and brought them back unto Yahweh, the God of their fathers.

5 Il institua des juges dans le pays, dans chacune des villes fortes de Juda,

And he stationed judges in the land, throughout all the fortified cities of Judah, city by city;

6 et dit à ces juges: "Soyez attentifs à ce que vous faites! Ce n’est pas au nom d’un homme que vous rendez justice, mais au nom de l’Eternel: Il est présent quand vous prononcez un jugement.

and said unto the judges, See what, ye, are doing, inasmuch as, not for man, must ye judge, but for Yahweh, —who will be with you, in the word of justice.

7 Puisse donc la crainte du Seigneur vous inspirer! Soyez circonspects dans vos actes, car l’Eternel, notre Dieu, n’admet ni iniquité, ni acception de personnes, ni corruption par les présents."

Now, therefore, let the dread of Yahweh be upon you, —observe and do, for there is, with Yahweh our God, neither perversity nor respect of persons nor the taking of bribes.

8 A Jérusalem également, Josaphat choisit des Lévites, des prêtres et des chefs de famille d’Israël pour connaître des affaires religieuses et des autres litiges. (On était revenu à Jérusalem.)

And, even in Jerusalem, did Jehoshaphat station some of the Levites and the priests, and of the ancestral chiefs of Israel, to pronounce the just sentence of Yahweh, and to settle disputes, —when they returned to Jerusalem.

9 Il leur adressa ces recommandations: "Voici comment vous agirez, guidés par la crainte du Seigneur, en toute droiture et d’un cœur intègre.

And he laid charge upon them, saying, —Thus, shall ye act, in the fear of Yahweh, faithfully and with an undivided heart.

10 Chaque fois que vos frères, demeurant dans leurs villes respectives, porteront un procès devant vous, qu’il s’agisse d’une question de meurtre ou qu’il s’agisse de doctrine, de prescriptions, de statuts et de droits, vous les éclairerez pour qu’ils ne se rendent pas coupables envers le Seigneur, ce qui vous attirerait à vous et à vos frères la colère divine. Faites ainsi, et vous éviterez les fautes.

Any dispute that shall come in unto you from among your brethren who are dwelling in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment and statutes and regulations, then shall ye warn them, that they may not become guilty against Yahweh, and so wrath come upon you and upon your brethren, —Thus, shall ye act, and not incur guilt.

11 Et voyez, le prêtre Amariahou sera à votre tête pour toutes les affaires religieuses, et Zebadiahou, fils d’Ismaël, le prince de la maison de Juda, pour toutes les affaires du roi. Les Lévites seront à votre disposition comme prévôts. Courage donc et à l’œuvre! Que l’Eternel assiste quiconque veut le bien!"

And lo! Amariah the chief priest, is over you as to every matter of Yahweh, and Zebadiah son of Ishmael the chief ruler for the house of Judah, as to every matter of the king, and, as officers, the Levites are before you, —Be strong and act, and Yahweh be with the good!
