1 Samuel 7

1 Les gens de Kiryath-Yearim vinrent prendre l’arche du Seigneur, la transportèrent dans la maison d’Abinadab, sur la colline, et consacrèrent son fils Eléazar pour lui en confier la garde.

And the men of Kiryath-ye'arim came, and fetched up the ark of the Lord, and brought it unto the house of Abinadab on the hill, and Elazar his son they sanctified to guard the ark of the Lord.

2 Or, depuis que l’arche résidait à Kiryath-Yearim, il s’était écoulé bien des jours, vingt années déjà, lorsque toute la maison d’Israël aspira à revenir vers l’Eternel.

And it came to pass, from the time the ark remained in Kiryath-ye'arim, and the time was long, and it was twenty years: that all the house of Israel followed anxiously after the Lord.

3 Alors Samuel parla ainsi à toute la maison d’Israël: "Si c’est de tout votre cœur que vous retournez à l’Eternel, écartez du milieu de vous les dieux étrangers et les Astaroth; dirigez votre cœur vers l’Eternel, ne servez que lui seul, et il vous sauvera de la main des Philistins."

And Samuel said unto all the house of Israel, as followeth, If with all your heart ye do return unto the Lord, then put away the gods of the stranger and the 'Ashtaroth from your midst, and direct your heart unto the Lord, and serve him alone: and then will he deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

4 Les Israélites firent disparaître les Bealim et les Astaroth, et servirent uniquement l’Eternel.

Then did the children of Israel put away the Be'alim and the 'Ashtaroth, and served the Lord alone.

5 Et Samuel dit: "Faites assembler tout Israël à Miçpa, que je prie l’Eternel en votre faveur."

And Samuel said, Assemble all Israel together at Mizpah, and I will pray in your behalf unto the Lord.

6 Ils s’assemblèrent à Miçpa; là on puisa de l’eau, qu’on répandit devant le Seigneur, et l’on jeûna en ce jour en disant: "Nous avons péché devant l’Eternel!" Et Samuel exerça le pouvoir sur les enfants d’Israël à Miçpa.

And they assembled themselves together at Mizpah, and drew water, and poured it out before the Lord, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the Lord. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpah.

7 Or, les Philistins ayant appris que les Israélites s’étaient réunis à Miçpa, leurs princes marchèrent contre Israël; les Israélites en furent informés, et ils eurent peur des Philistins.

And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel had assembled themselves at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.

8 Et ils dirent à Samuel: "Ne nous refuse pas d’implorer l’Eternel, notre Dieu, pour qu’il nous sauve de la main des Philistins!"

And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Do not abstain, so as not to cry for us unto the Lord our God, that he may help us out of the hand of the Philistines.

9 Samuel prit un agneau de lait, qu’il offrit tout entier en holocauste au Seigneur; puis il implora le Seigneur pour Israël, et le Seigneur l’exauça.

And Samuel took one sucking lamb, and offered it for an entire burnt-offering unto the Lord: and Samuel cried unto the Lord in behalf of Israel; and the Lord answered him.

10 Tandis que Samuel offrait l’holocauste, les Philistins s’avancèrent pour attaquer Israël; mais le Seigneur tonna en ce moment, avec grand fracas, sur les Philistins, les étourdit, et ils furent battus par Israël.

And as Samuel was offering up the burnt-offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel; but the Lord thundered with a loud noise on that day over the Philistines, and brought them into confusion, and they were smitten before Israel.

11 Les gens d’Israël s’élancèrent de Miçpa à la poursuite des Philistins, et les battirent jusque sous Beth-Car.

And the men of Israel went out of Mizpah, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, as far as below Beth-car.

12 Samuel prit alors une pierre, qu’il posa entre Miçpa et Chên et qu’il appela Eben-Haézer, en disant: "Dieu nous a assistés jusqu’ici."

And Samuel took one stone, and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Eben-ha'ezer, saying, As far as this hath the Lord helped us.

13 Ainsi les Philistins furent matés, et ne tentèrent plus de pénétrer sur le territoire d’Israël; car la main de l’Eternel pesa sur eux tant que vécut Samuel.

So were the Philistines humbled, and they came no more into the territory of Israel; and the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

14 Les villes que les Philistins avaient prises à Israël furent recouvrées par lui, depuis Ekron jusqu’à Gath, ainsi que leur territoire, qu’Israël reprit sur les Philistins. Il y avait paix, d’ailleurs, entre Israël et les Amorréens.

And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel came again to Israel, from 'Ekron even unto Gath, and their territory did Israel deliver out of the hand of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Emorites.

15 Samuel conserva le gouvernement d’Israël sa vie durant.

And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

16 Tous les ans il faisait un voyage, parcourant Béthel, Ghilgal, Miçpa, et rendait la justice à Israël dans toutes ces villes;

And he went from year to year and traveled in circuit to Beth-el, and Gilgal, and Mizpah, and judged Israel in all these places.

17 puis il revenait à Rama, car là était sa maison, et c’est là qu’il gouvernait Israël. Il y éleva aussi un autel au Seigneur.

And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel: and he built there an altar unto the Lord.
