1 Samuel 15
1 Samuel dit un jour à Saül: "C’Est moi que le Seigneur avait envoyé pour te sacrer roi de son peuple Israël; maintenant donc, obéis aux paroles du Seigneur.
And Samuel said to Saul, The Lord sent me to anoint you king over Israel: and now hear the voice of the Lord.
2 Ainsi parle l’Eternel-Cebaot: J’Ai à demander compte de ce qu’Amalec a fait à Israël, en se mettant sur son chemin quand il sortit d’Egypte.
Thus said the Lord of hosts, Now will I take vengeance for what Amalec did to Israel, when he met him in the way as he came up out of Egypt.
3 Maintenant, va frapper Amalec, et anéantissez tout ce qui est à lui; qu’il n’obtienne point de merci! Fais tout périr, homme et femme, enfant et nourrisson, bœuf et brebis, chameau et âne!"
And now go, and you shall strike Amalec and Hierim and all that belongs to him, and you shall not save anything of him alive, but you shall utterly destroy him: and you shall devote him and all his to [destruction], and you shall spare nothing belonging to him; and you shall kill both man and woman, and infant and suckling, and calf and sheep, and camel and ass.
4 Saül convoqua le peuple et le dénombra à Telaïm: il y avait deux cent mille gens de pied, plus dix mille parmi les hommes de Juda.
And Saul summoned the people, and he numbered them in Galgala, four hundred thousand regular troops, and Juda thirty thousand regular troops.
5 Saül s’avança jusqu’à la cité d’Amalec, et se porta dans la vallée.
And Saul came to the cities of Amalec, and laid wait in the valley.
6 Et il dit aux Kénéens: "Allez, partez, séparez-vous de l’Amalécite, car je pourrais vous anéantir avec lui; et cependant vous avez agi avec bonté à l’égard des enfants d’Israël à l’époque où ils quittèrent l’Egypte." Et les Kénéens se séparèrent d’Amalec.
And Saul said to the Kinite, Go, and depart out of the midst of the Amalekites, lest I put you with them; for you dealt mercifully with the children of Israel when they went up out of Egypt. So the Kinite departed from the midst of Amalec.
7 Saül défit Amalec, depuis Havila jusqu’à Chour, sur la frontière d’Egypte.
And Saul struck Amalec from Evilat to Sur fronting Egypt.
8 Il prit vivant Agag, roi d’Amalec, et fit passer tout son peuple au fil de l’épée.
And he took Agag the king of Amalec alive, and he killed all the people and Hierim with the edge of the sword.
9 Mais Saül et l’armée épargnèrent Agag, ainsi que les meilleures pièces du menu et du gros bétail, les coursiers et autres animaux de choix, tout ce qu’il y avait de meilleur; ils ne voulurent point les détruire, n’anéantissant que les choses chétives et de peu de valeur.
And Saul and all the people saved Agag alive, and the best of the flocks, and of the herds, and of the fruits, of the vineyards, and of all the good things; and they would not destroy them: but every worthless and refuse thing they destroyed.
10 Sur quoi, l’Eternel parla ainsi à Samuel:
And the word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying,
11 "Je regrette d’avoir conféré la royauté à Saül, parce qu’il m’a été infidèle et n’a pas accompli mes ordres." Et Samuel, consterné, implora le Seigneur toute la nuit.
I have repented that I have made Saul to be king: for he has turned back from following me, and has not kept my word. And Samuel was grieved, and cried to the Lord all night.
12 Le lendemain, de bonne heure, Samuel s’en alla à la rencontre de Saül. Mais on lui rapporta la nouvelle que Saül, arrivé à Carmel, venait de s’y élever un trophée, qu’il avait ensuite changé de direction, s’acheminant vers Ghilgal.
And Samuel rose early and went to meet Israel in the morning, and it was told Saul, saying, Samuel has come to Carmel, and he has raised up help for himself: and he turned his chariot, and came down to Galgala to Saul; and, behold, he was offering up a whole burnt offering to the Lord, the chief of the spoils which he brought out of Amalec.
13 Alors Samuel rejoignit Saül, et celui-ci lui dit: "Sois le bienvenu au nom du Seigneur! J’Ai exécuté l’ordre de l’Eternel."
And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said to him, Blessed [are] you of the Lord: I have performed all that the Lord said.
14 "Et qu’est-ce, demanda Samuel, que ces bêlements qui frappent mes oreilles, et ces mugissements de bœufs que j’entends?"
And Samuel said, What then [is] the bleating of this flock in my ears, and the sound of the oxen which I hear?
15 Saül répondit: "On a amené ces animaux de chez les Amalécites, le peuple ayant épargné les plus gras du menu et du gros bétail, pour les sacrifier à l’Eternel, ton Dieu; mais le reste, nous l’avons détruit.
And Saul said, I have brought them out of Amalec, that which the people preserved, even the best of the sheep, and of the cattle, that it might be sacrificed to the Lord your God, and the rest have I utterly destroyed.
16 Samuel dit à Saül: "Assez! Je veux t’apprendre ce que, cette nuit, m’a dit le Seigneur." Il lui répondit: "Parle."
And Samuel said to Saul, Stay, and I will tell you what the Lord has said to me this night: and he said to him, Say on.
17 Et Samuel dit: "Quoi! Si tu es petit à tes propres yeux, n’es-tu pas le chef des tribus d’Israël? Et le Seigneur ne t’a-t-il pas sacré roi d’Israël?
And Samuel said to Saul, Are you not little in his eyes, [though] a leader of one of the tribes of Israel? and [yet] the Lord anointed you to be king over Israel.
18 Le Seigneur t’a chargé d’une expédition il a dit: Va détruire ce peuple coupable, cet Amalec, et fais-lui une guerre d’extermination!
And the Lord sent you on a journey, and said to you, Go, and utterly destroy: you shall kill the sinners against me, [even] the Amalekites; and you shall war against them until you have consumed them.
19 Pourquoi donc n’as-tu pas obéi à la voix du Seigneur, et t’es-tu jeté sur le butin, faisant ainsi ce qui déplaît au Seigneur?"
And why did not you listen to the voice of the Lord, but did haste to fasten upon the spoils, and did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord?
20 Saül répliqua à Samuel: "Mais j’ai obéi à la voix du Seigneur! J’Ai accompli la mission qu’il m’avait donnée! J’Ai emmené Agag, roi d’Amalec, et Amalec je l’ai exterminé!
And Saul said to Samuel, Because I listened to the voice of the people: yet I went the way by which the Lord sent me, and I brought Agag the king of Amalec, and I destroyed Amalec.
21 Et le peuple a choisi, dans les dépouilles, du menu et du gros bétail, le meilleur de l’anathème, pour l’immoler à l’Eternel, ton Dieu, à Ghilgal…
But the people took of the spoils the best flocks and herds [out] of that which was destroyed, to sacrifice before the Lord our God in Galgal.
22 Samuel répondit "Des holocaustes, des sacrifices ont-ils autant de prix aux yeux de l’Eternel que l’obéissance à la voix divine? Ah! L’Obéissance vaut mieux qu’un sacrifice, et la soumission que la graisse des béliers!
And Samuel said, Does the Lord take pleasure in whole burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in hearing the words of the Lord? behold, obedience [is] better than a good sacrifice, and hearkening than the fat of rams.
23 Mais la rébellion est coupable comme la magie, et l’insubordination comme le crime d’idolâtrie. Puisque tu as repoussé la parole de l’Eternel, il te repousse de la royauté."
For sin is [as] divination; idols bring on pain and grief. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, the Lord also shall reject you from being king over Israel.
24 Saül dit à Samuel: "J’Ai péché, car j’ai transgressé la parole de l’Eternel et tes ordres. Je craignais le peuple, et j’ai cédé à sa voix.
And Saul said to Samuel, I have sinned, in that I have transgressed the word of the Lord and your direction; for I feared the people, and I listened to their voice.
25 Et maintenant, sois indulgent pour ma faute reviens avec moi, que je me prosterne devant le Seigneur!"
And now remove, I pray you, my sin, and turn back with me, and I will worship the Lord your God.
26 Samuel répondit à Saül: "Je n’irai pas avec toi: tu as dédaigné la parole de l’Eternel, l’Eternel te déclare indigne d’être roi d’Israël."
And Samuel said to Saul, I will not turn back with you, for you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord will reject you from being king over Israel.
27 Comme Samuel lui tournait le dos pour s’en aller, Saül saisit le pan de sa robe, qui se déchira;
And Samuel turned his face to depart, and Saul caught hold of the skirt of his garment, and tore it.
28 et Samuel lui dit: "C’Est ainsi que le Seigneur t’arrache aujourd’hui la royauté d’Israël, pour la donner à ton prochain, plus digne que toi!
And Samuel said to him, The Lord has tore your kingdom from Israel out of your hand this day, and will give it to your neighbor who is better than you.
29 Du reste, le Protecteur d’Israël n’est ni trompeur ni versatile; ce n’est pas un mortel, pour qu’il se rétracte."
And Israel shall be divided to two: and [God] will not turn nor repent, for he is not as a man to repent.
30 "Je suis coupable, dit Saül; toutefois, en ce moment, montre-moi quelque égard devant les anciens de mon peuple et devant Israël, en revenant avec moi, pour que je me prosterne devant l’Eternel, ton Dieu.
And Saul said, I have sinned; yet honor me, I pray you, before the elders of Israel, and before my people; and turn back with me, and I will worship the Lord your God.
31 Samuel revint à la suite de Saül, lequel se prosterna devant l’Eternel.
So Samuel turned back after Saul, and he worshipped the Lord.
32 Et Samuel dit: "Amenez-moi Agag, roi d’Amalec." Agag s’avança vers lui d’un air joyeux, en disant: "En vérité, l’amertume de la mort a disparu."
And Samuel said, Bring me Agag the king of Amalec: and Agag came to him trembling; and Agag said Is death thus bitter?
33 Mais Samuel dit: "Comme ton épée a désolé les mères, qu’ainsi ta mère soit désolée entre les femmes!" Et Samuel fit exécuter Agag devant le Seigneur, à Ghilgal.
And Samuel said to Agag, As your sword has bereaved women of their children, so shall your mother be made childless among women: and Samuel killed Agag before the Lord in Galgal.
34 Samuel s’en alla à Rama, et Saül se retira dans sa maison à Ghibea-de-Saül.
And Samuel departed to Armathaim, and Saul went up to his house at Gabaa.
35 Samuel ne revit plus Saül jusqu’au jour de sa mort, à cause de la douleur que lui inspirait Saül, le Seigneur ayant regretté d’avoir fait Saül roi d’Israël.
And Samuel did not see Saul again till the day of his death, for Samuel mourned after Saul, and the Lord repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
