1 Samuel 14

1 Un jour, Jonathan, fils de Saül, dit au serviteur qui portait ses armes: "Viens, nous allons attaquer le poste des Philistins qui est là, de l’autre côté"; mais il n’en dit rien à son père.

Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that [is] on the other side. But he told not his father.

2 Saül était alors à l’extrémité de la colline, sous le grenadier qui s’élève à Migron, et la troupe sous ses ordres était d’environ six cents hommes.

And Saul tarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which [is] in Migron: and the people that [were] with him [were] about six hundred men;

3 Ahiya, fils d’Ahitoub, frère d’Ikabod, fils de Phinéas, fils d’Héli, était alors prêtre du Seigneur à Silo, et revêtu de l’éphod. Le peuple ignorait également l’entreprise de Jonathan.

And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, I-chabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD’s priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.

4 Or, entre les passages par où Jonathan voulait surprendre le poste des Philistins, une pointe de rocher s’élevait d’un côté, et une pointe de rocher de l’autre, l’une appelée Bocêç, l’autre Séné;

And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines’ garrison, [there was] a sharp rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one [was] Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.

5 l’une était située vers Mikhmach, au nord, l’autre au midi vers Ghéba.

The forefront of the one [was] situate northward over against Michmash, and the other southward over against Gibeah.

6 Jonathan donc dit à son écuyer: "Viens, nous allons attaquer le poste de ces incirconcis, peut-être le Seigneur nous fera-t-il réussir; car pour lui point d’obstacle, il peut donner la victoire au petit nombre comme au grand."

And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for [there is] no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.

7 L’Écuyer lui répondit: "Agis absolument à ton gré, va où tu veux, je suis prêt à te suivre."

And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that [is] in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I [am] with thee according to thy heart.

8 "Ecoute, reprit Jonathan: nous allons nous glisser vers ces hommes, puis nous nous ferons voir à eux.

Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto [these] men, and we will discover ourselves unto them.

9 Si alors ils nous disent: "Halte! Nous allons vous joindre", nous resterons en place et ne monterons pas vers eux.

If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.

10 Mais s’ils disent: "Montez vers nous", nous irons, car l’Eternel nous les aura livrés, et ce mot en sera pour nous le pronostic."

But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand: and this [shall be] a sign unto us.

11 Lorsqu’ils furent aperçus tous deux par les hommes du poste, les Philistins dirent: "Voilà des Hébreux qui sortent des trous où ils s’étaient cachés."

And both of them discovered themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.

12 Et les hommes du poste, interpellant Jonathan et son écuyer: "Montez ici, dirent-ils, nous avons quelque chose à vous apprendre." Alors Jonathan dit à son écuyer: "Suis-moi là-haut, l’Eternel les livre au pouvoir d’Israël!"

And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will shew you a thing. And Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.

13 Et Jonathan monta, en s’aidant des mains et des pieds, et son écuyer le suivit; ils tombèrent sous les coups de Jonathan, tandis que l’écuyer donnait la mort à sa suite.

And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearer after him: and they fell before Jonathan; and his armourbearer slew after him.

14 Cette première défaite, où Jonathan et son serviteur tuèrent une vingtaine d’hommes, eut lieu dans l’espace d’un demi-arpent de terre environ.

And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armourbearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were an half acre of land, [which] a yoke [of oxen might plow].

15 L’Effroi fut au camp, dans la campagne, dans toute l’armée; les avant-postes et le corps d’invasion tremblèrent à leur tour; la contrée fut en émoi, et cela devint une terreur de Dieu.

And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earth quaked: so it was a very great trembling.

16 Les sentinelles postées par Saül à Ghibea-de-Benjamin signalèrent cette multitude en désordre, qui courait éperdue.

And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down [one another].

17 Saül dit alors à sa troupe: "Comptez-vous, et voyez qui nous a quittés." On fit l’appel et on constata l’absence de Jonathan et de son écuyer.

Then said Saul unto the people that [were] with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armourbearer [were] not [there].

18 Saül dit à Ahiya: "Fais avancer l’arche du Seigneur!" car l’arche du Seigneur, ce jour-là, était auprès des enfants d’Israël.

And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring hither the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the children of Israel.

19 Mais pendant que Saül parlait au prêtre, la confusion allait croissant dans le camp des Philistins… Alors Saül dit au prêtre: "Retire ta main."

And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that [was] in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.

20 Et Saül se mit en mouvement avec tout son monde, et, arrivés sur le terrain de la lutte, ils les virent s’entre-tuant de leurs glaives dans une effroyable mêlée.

And Saul and all the people that [were] with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man’s sword was against his fellow, [and there was] a very great discomfiture.

21 Les Hébreux qui, antérieurement, avaient passé aux Philistins, et qui, répandus dans leur armée, avaient pris part à leur expédition, firent cause commune avec les Israélites rangés sous les ordres de Saül et de Jonathan.

Moreover the Hebrews [that] were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp [from the country] round about, even they also [turned] to be with the Israelites that [were] with Saul and Jonathan.

22 Pareillement, tous les Israélites cachés dans la montagne d’Ephraïm, apprenant la déroute des Philistins, reprirent l’offensive en les poursuivant.

Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, [when] they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.

23 L’Eternel donna, en cette occurrence, la victoire à Israël; la lutte s’était étendue jusqu’à Beth-Avên.

So the LORD saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto Beth-aven.

24 Or, les Israélites avaient été surmenés ce jour-là, et Saül avait adjuré le peuple en disant: "Malheur à celui qui prendrait de la nourriture avant le soir, avant que j’aie fait justice de mes ennemis!" Et le peuple entier ne goûta quoi que ce fût.

And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed [be] the man that eateth [any] food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted [any] food.

25 Toute l’armée était arrivée à un bois, où la surface du sol était couverte de miel.

And all [they of] the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground.

26 En arrivant dans le bois, le peuple vit ce miel ruisselant; mais, craignant les effets de l’adjuration, personne n’y porta la main pour en goûter.

And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.

27 Toutefois Jonathan, ignorant que son père avait adjuré le peuple, étendit la baguette qu’il tenait à la main, en trempa l’extrémité dans un rayon de miel, et, avec la main, le porta à sa bouche, ce qui lui éclaircit la vue.

But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that [was] in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.

28 Quelqu’un du peuple s’écria: "Ton père a adjuré le peuple en disant: Malheur à qui prendra de la nourriture aujourd’hui! Et le peuple est exténué."

Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed [be] the man that eateth [any] food this day. And the people were faint.

29 Jonathan répondit "Mon père a fait tort au pays: voyez donc comme mes yeux se sont éclaircis, pour avoir goûté un peu de ce miel!

Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.

30 Et certes, si le peuple s’était restauré aujourd’hui du butin fait sur les ennemis, combien la défaite des Philistins ne serait-elle pas plus considérable!"

How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?

31 Ce jour-là on tailla en pièces les Philistins, depuis Mikhmach jusqu’à Ayyalôn; mais le peuple était bien harassé.

And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon: and the people were very faint.

32 Aussi se rua-t-il sur le butin: brebis, bœufs, veaux, ils s’en saisirent, les égorgèrent à même le sol, en mangèrent la chair avec le sang.

And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew [them] on the ground: and the people did eat [them] with the blood.

33 On le rapporta à Saül en disant: "Le peuple offense le Seigneur, en mangeant la chair avec le sang!" Et il dit: "Vous agissez en infidèles! Roulez-moi ici sur l’heure une grosse pierre.

Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.

34 Répandez-vous dans l’armée, continua Saül, et dites-leur de m’amener chacun son bœuf ou sa menue bête, de l’égorger ici et de la manger; de la sorte, vous ne commettrez pas envers Dieu le péché de manger avec le sang." Et chacun parmi le peuple amena ses bêtes cette même nuit, et on les tua là.

And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay [them] here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew [them] there.

35 Saül bâtit un autel au Seigneur: ce fut le premier autel qu’il éleva en son honneur.

And Saul built an altar unto the LORD: the same was the first altar that he built unto the LORD.

36 Et Saül dit: "Courons cette nuit à la poursuite des Philistins, accablons-les jusqu’au matin, n’en laissons pas survivre un seul!" On lui répondit: "Fais comme il te plaira…" Mais le prêtre dit: "Approchons-nous d’abord du Seigneur."

And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God.

37 Saül consulta donc le Seigneur: "Dois-je, dit-il, me mettre à la poursuite des Philistins? Les livreras-tu au pouvoir d’Israël?" Mais il ne lui fut pas répondu cette fois.

And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.

38 Alors Saül dit: "Avancez ici, tous les rangs du peuple, afin de savoir et de constater quel péché s’est commis en ce jour!

And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.

39 Oui, par le Dieu vivant qui protège Israël, quand il s’agirait de Jonathan mon fils, il devra mourir!" Personne du peuple ne lui répondit.

For, [as] the LORD liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But [there was] not a man among all the people [that] answered him.

40 Et il dit à tout Israël: "Vous, mettez-vous d’un côté; moi et mon fils Jonathan, nous serons de l’autre." Le peuple répondit à Saül: "Agis à ton gré."

Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.

41 Et Saül, s’adressant à l’Eternel, dit "Dieu d’Israël, fais connaître la vérité!" Le sort atteignit Jonathan et Saül, et écarta le peuple.

Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect [lot]. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.

42 Saül dit alors: "Faites l’épreuve entre moi et mon fils Jonathan." Et le sort tomba sur Jonathan.

And Saul said, Cast [lots] between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.

43 "Déclare-moi ce que tu as fait!" dit Saül à Jonathan. Celui-ci l’avoua en disant: "J’Ai goûté un peu de miel avec le bout de la baguette que je tenais à la main. Je suis prêt à mourir."

Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that [was] in mine hand, [and], lo, I must die.

44 Saül répondit: "Dieu me soit toujours en aide aussi vrai que tu vas mourir, Jonathan!"

And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.

45 Mais le peuple dit à Saül "Quoi! Jonathan mourrait, lui qui a procuré une si grande victoire à Israël! Garde-toi bien, vive Dieu! de faire tomber un cheveu de sa tête, car c’est avec Dieu qu’il a agi en ce jour!" L’Intervention du peuple sauva Jonathan de la mort.

And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: [as] the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.

46 Saül renonça à poursuivre les Philistins, lesquels regagnèrent leur pays.

Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place.

47 Saül s’assura la royauté d’Israël en combattant tous ses ennemis d’alentour, Moab, les Ammonites, Edom, les rois de Çoba et les Philistins, et sortant vainqueur de toutes ses entreprises.

So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself, he vexed [them].

48 Il signala sa bravoure en battant Amalec, et délivra Israël de ses déprédateurs.

And he gathered an host, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that spoiled them.

49 Les fils de Saül étaient: Jonathan, Yichvi et Malkichoua; et ses deux filles avaient nom, l’aînée Mérab, la plus jeune Mikhal.

Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishui, and Melchi-shua: and the names of his two daughters [were these; ] the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal:

50 Pour la femme de Saül, elle se nommait Ahinoam, fille d’Ahimaaç; et son général d’armée était Abiner, fils de Ner et cousin de Saül:

And the name of Saul’s wife [was] Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz: and the name of the captain of his host [was] Abner, the son of Ner, Saul’s uncle.

51 car Kich, père de Saül, et Ner, père d’Abner, étaient fils d’Abïel.

And Kish [was] the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner [was] the son of Abiel.

52 La guerre se continua violente avec les Philistins, tant que vécut Saül; et toutes les fois que Saül remarquait un homme fort, un vaillant combattant, il le faisait entrer dans sa milice.

And there was sore war against the Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, he took him unto him.
