1 Samuel 1

1 A Ramataïm-Çophim, sur la montagne d’Ephraïm, était un homme ayant nom Elkana, fils de Yeroham, fils d’Elihou, fils de Tohou, fils de Çouf, un Ephratéen.

There was a man of one of the two Ramathaim Zophim, of mount Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah the sonne of Ieroham, the sonne of Elihu, the sonne of Tohu, the sonne of Zuph, an Ephrathite:

2 Il avait deux femmes, l’une nommée Hanna, la seconde Peninna; Peninna avait des enfants, Hanna n’en avait point.

And he had two wiues: the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

3 Or, cet homme partait de sa ville, chaque année, pour se prosterner et sacrifier à l’Eternel-Cebaot dans Silo, où les deux fils d’Héli, Hophni et Phinéas, fonctionnaient comme prêtres du Seigneur.

And this man went vp out of his citie euery yeere, to worship and to sacrifice vnto the Lord of hostes in Shiloh, where were the two sonnes of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas Priests of the Lord.

4 L’Époque venue, Elkana faisait son sacrifice, dont il donnait des portions à Peninna, sa femme, et à tous les fils et filles qu’il avait d’elle;

And on a day, when Elkanah sacrificed, he gaue to Peninnah his wife and to all her sonnes and daughters portions,

5 tandis qu’à Hanna il ne donnait qu’une seule portion, à son grand déplaisir, parce qu’il aimait Hanna et que le Seigneur l’avait rendue stérile.

But vnto Hannah he gaue a worthy portion: for he loued Hannah, and the Lord had made her barren.

6 Mais sa rivale l’exaspérait sans cesse pour provoquer ses murmures, sur ce que Dieu avait refusé à son sein la fécondité.

And her aduersarie vexed her sore, forasmuch as she vpbraided her, because the Lord had made her barren.

7 Cela se passait de la sorte chaque année, lorsque Hanna se rendait à la maison du Seigneur; chaque fois sa rivale l’exaspérait, et Hanna pleurait et ne mangeait point.

(And so did he yeere by yeere) and as oft as she went vp to the house of the Lord, thus she vexed her, that she wept and did not eate.

8 Elkana, son mari, lui disait: "Hanna, pourquoi pleures-tu? Pourquoi ne manges-tu point, et pourquoi ton cœur est-il affligé? Est-ce que je ne vaux pas, pour toi, plus que dix enfants?".

Then sayd Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thine heart troubled? am not I better to thee then ten sonnes?

9 Un jour, après qu’on eut mangé et bu à Silo, Hanna se leva… Héli le pontife se trouvait alors sur son siège, au seuil du sanctuaire de l’Eternel.

So Hannah rose vp after that they had eaten and drunke in Shiloh (and Eli the Priest sate vpon a stoole by one of the postes of the Temple of the Lord)

10 L’Âme remplie d’amertume, elle pria devant l’Eternel et pleura longtemps.

And she was troubled in her minde, and prayed vnto the Lord, and wept sore:

11 Puis elle prononça ce vœu: "Eternel-Cebaot! Si tu daignes considérer l’affliction de ta servante, te souvenir d’elle et ne point l’oublier; si tu donnes à ta servante un enfant mâle, je le vouerai au Seigneur pour toute sa vie, et le rasoir ne touchera point sa tête."

Also she vowed a vowe, and sayd, O Lord of hostes, if thou wilt looke on the trouble of thine handmaide, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaide, but giue vnto thine handmaide a manchilde, then I will giue him vnto the Lord all the dayes of his life, and there shall no rasor come vpon his head.

12 Or, comme elle priait longuement devant l’Eternel, Héli observa sa bouche:

And as she continued praying before the Lord, Eli marked her mouth.

13 Hanna parlait en elle-même; on voyait seulement remuer ses lèvres, mais on n’entendait pas sa voix. Héli la crut ivre,

For Hannah spake in her heart: her lips did moue onely, but her voyce was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had bene drunken.

14 et il lui dit: "Combien de temps veux-tu étaler ton ivresse? Va cuver ton vin!"

And Eli sayde vnto her, Howe long wilt thou be drunken? Put away thy drunkennesse from thee.

15 Hanna répondit: "Non, Seigneur, je ne suis qu’une femme au cœur navré; je n’ai bu ni vin ni liqueur forte, j’ai seulement épanché mon âme devant l’Eternel.

Then Hannah answered and sayd, Nay my lord, but I am a woman troubled in spirit: I haue drunke neither wine nor strong drinke, but haue powred out my soule before the Lord.

16 Ne prends pas ta servante pour une femme perverse, car c’est l’excès de mes griefs et de ma douleur qui m’a fait parler si longtemps."

Count not thine handmaide for a wicked woman: for of the abundance of my complaint and my griefe haue I spoken hitherto.

17 Héli reprit la parole et dit: "Va donc en paix; et que le Dieu d’Israël t’accorde ce que tu lui as demandé."

Then Eli answered, and sayd, Go in peace, and the God of Israel graunt thy petition that thou hast asked of him.

18 Et Hanna dit: "Puisse ta servante trouver grâce à tes yeux!" Alors cette femme se remit en chemin, prit de la nourriture, et sa physionomie ne fut plus la même.

She sayd againe, Let thine handmayd finde grace in thy sight: so the woman went her way, and did eate, and looked no more sad.

19 Le lendemain de bon matin, ils se prosternèrent devant l’Eternel, puis s’en retournèrent à leur demeure à Rama. Elkana s’unit à Hanna, et le Seigneur se souvint d’elle.

Then they rose vp early, and worshipped before the Lord, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah. Nowe Elkanah knewe Hannah his wife, and the Lord remembred her.

20 Au terme de la période, Hanna, qui avait conçu, enfanta un fils et lui donna le nom de Samuel, "parce que, dit-elle, j’ai demandé cet enfant au Seigneur."

For in processe of time Hannah conceiued, and bare a sonne, and she called his name Samuel, Because, said she, I haue asked him of the Lord.

21 Le mari, Elkana, étant parti avec toute sa maison pour faire au Seigneur son sacrifice annuel et ses offrandes votives,

So the man Elkanah and all his house went vp to offer vnto the Lord the yeerely sacrifice, and his vowe:

22 Hanna ne l’accompagna point, car elle dit à son époux: "Une fois que l’enfant sera sevré, je l’emmènerai, et il paraîtra en présence du Seigneur, et il y restera toujours."

But Hannah went not vp: for she sayd vnto her husband, I will tarie vntill the childe be weined, then I will bring him that hee may appeare before the Lord, and there abide for euer.

23 Elkana, son époux, lui répondit: "Fais comme il te plaît, attends que tu l’aies sevré; veuille seulement le Seigneur accomplir sa parole!" La femme resta donc et allaita son fils, jusqu’à ce qu’elle l’eût sevré.

And Elkanah her husband sayd vnto her, Do what seemeth thee best: tarie vntill thou hast weined him: only the Lord accomplish his word. So the woman abode, and gaue her sonne sucke vntill she weined him.

24 Quand elle l’eut sevré, elle l’emmena avec trois taureaux, une êpha de farine et une outre de vin et le conduisit à la maison du Seigneur, à Silo; l’enfant était encore tout jeune.

And when she had weined him, she tooke him with her with three bullockes and an Ephah of floure and a bottell of wine, and brought him vnto the house of the Lord in Shiloh, and the childe was yong.

25 On immola l’un des taureaux, puis on présenta l’enfant à Héli;

And they slewe a bullocke, and brought the childe to Eli.

26 et Hanna lui dit: "Ecoute-moi, seigneur! Par ta vie, seigneur! Je suis cette femme que tu as vue ici, près de toi, implorer l’Eternel.

And she said, Oh my Lord, as thy soule liueth, my lord, I am the woman that stoode with thee here praying vnto the Lord.

27 C’Est pour obtenir cet enfant que j’avais prié; et l’Eternel m’a accordé ce que je lui avais demandé.

I prayed for this childe, and the Lord hath giuen me my desire which I asked of him.

28 Mais à mon tour je l’avais voué au Seigneur: depuis qu’il est né, il est consacré à Dieu." Alors on se prosterna devant l’Eternel.

Therefore also I haue giuen him vnto the Lord: as long as he liueth hee shalbe giuen vnto the Lord: and he worshipped the Lord there.
