1 Hiram, roi de Tyr, envoya ses serviteurs à Salomon, lors—qu’il eut appris qu’on l’avait sacré roi à la place de son père; car, de tout temps, Hiram avait été ami de David.
Now Hiram, king of Tyre, hearing that Solomon had been made king in place of his father, sent his servants to him; for Hiram had ever been a friend to David.
2 Et Salomon fit dire à Hiram:
And Solomon sent back word to Hiram, saying,
3 "Tu sais que David, mon père, n’a pu édifier une maison en l’honneur de l’Eternel, son Dieu, à cause des guerres que ses ennemis lui ont suscitées sans cesse, jusqu’à ce que l’Eternel les eût mis sous ses pieds.
You have knowledge that David my father was not able to make a house for the name of the Lord his God, because of the wars which were round him on every side, till the Lord put all those who were against him under his feet.
4 Mais à présent, je suis, grâce à l’Eternel, mon Dieu, en paix avec tous les peuples qui m’entourent; plus d’ennemi, plus d’obstacles fâcheux.
But now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side; no one is making trouble, and no evil is taking place.
5 Je projette donc d’édifier une maison en l’honneur de l’Eternel, mon Dieu, selon ce qu’il a dit à David, mon père, en ces termes: Ton fils, que je te donnerai pour successeur au trône, c’est lui qui bâtira la maison en mon honneur.
And so it is my purpose to make a house for the name of the Lord my God, as he said to David my father, Your son, whom I will make king in your place, will be the builder of a house for my name.
6 Et maintenant, donne des ordres pour qu’on me coupe des cèdres du Liban; mes travailleurs aideront les tiens, dont je te paierai le salaire selon ce que tu me diras. Car, tu le sais, il n’y a personne chez nous qui soit habile à couper les arbres comme les Sidoniens."
So now, will you have cedar-trees from Lebanon cut down for me, and my servants will be with your servants; and I will give you payment for your servants at whatever rate you say; for it is common knowledge that we have no such wood-cutters among us as the men of Zidon.
7 Lorsque Hiram eut connaissance du message de Salomon, il s’en réjouit fort et dit: "Béni soit l’Eternel d’avoir donné à David un fils capable de gouverner ce grand peuple!"
And these words of Solomon made Hiram glad, and he said, Now may the Lord be praised who has given to David a wise son to be king over this great people.
8 Et il manda ce qui suit à Salomon: "J’Ai reçu ton message; je ferai tout ce que tu désires, en ce qui concerne et le bois de cèdre et le bois de cyprès.
Then Hiram sent to Solomon, saying; The words you sent have been given to me: I will do all your desire in the question of cedar-wood and cypress-wood.
9 Mes serviteurs les transporteront du Liban à la mer; je les ferai assembler en radeaux, qui iront par mer jusqu’à l’endroit que tu me désigneras; là je les ferai disjoindre, et tu en prendras livraison. De ton côté, tu me satisferas en assurant l’entretien de ma maison."
My men will take them down from Lebanon to the sea, where I will have them corded together to go by sea to whatever place you say, and I will have them cut up there so that you may take them away; as for payment, it will be enough if you give me food for my people.
10 Hiram fournit ainsi à Salomon du bois de cèdre et du bois de cyprès, autant qu’il en voulait;
So Hiram gave Solomon all the cedar-wood and cypress-wood he had need of;
11 et Salomon fournit à Hiram, pour l’entretien de sa maison, vingt mille kôr de froment et vingt kôr d’huile d’olives concassées; voilà ce qu’il lui fournissait chaque année.
And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand measures of grain, as food for his people, and twenty measures of clear oil; this he did every year.
12 Le Seigneur avait doué Salomon de sagesse, comme il le lui avait promis; Hiram et Salomon vivaient en paix, et ils conclurent entre eux une alliance.
Now the Lord had given Solomon wisdom, as he had said to him; and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and they made an agreement together.
13 Le roi Salomon leva un contingent sur la totalité d’Israël, contingent qui se monta à trente mille hommes.
Then King Solomon got together men for the forced work through all Israel, thirty thousand men in number;
14 Il les envoya au Liban, dix mille hommes par mois à tour de rôle; ils passaient un mois sur le Liban et deux mois dans leurs foyers; Adoniram dirigeait le service.
And sent them to Lebanon in bands of ten thousand every month: for a month they were working in Lebanon and for two months in their country, and Adoniram was in control of them.
15 Salomon employa soixante-dix mille hommes pour porter les fardeaux, et quatre-vingt mille pour extraire les pierres de la montagne,
Then he had seventy thousand for the work of transport, and eighty thousand stone-cutters in the mountains;
16 indépendamment des inspecteurs préposés par Salomon aux travaux, trois mille trois cents hommes, chargés de la police des travailleurs.
In addition to the chiefs of the responsible men put by Solomon to oversee the work, three thousand and three hundred in authority over the workmen.
17 Sur l’ordre du roi, on tira des carrières de grosses et lourdes pierres, des pierres de taille, pour les fondations du temple.
By the king's orders great stones, stones of high price, were cut out, so that the base of the house might be made of squared stone.
18 Et les ouvriers de Salomon et ceux de Hiram et les Ghibléens équarrissaient et façonnaient le bois et la pierre pour l’édification du temple.
Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders did the work of cutting them, and put edges on them, and got the wood and the stone ready for the building of the house.
