1 Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, rassembla toute son armée, et, assisté de trente-deux rois, avec chars et cavalerie, il alla assiéger Samarie et diriger ses attaques contre elle.
And Ben-Hadad king of Aram has gathered all his force, and thirty-two kings [are] with him, and horse and chariot, and he goes up and lays siege against Samaria, and fights with it,
2 Il envoya des messagers à Achab, roi d’Israël, dans la ville,
and sends messengers to Ahab king of Israel, to the city,
3 pour lui dire: "Ainsi a parlé Ben-Hadad: A moi ton argent et ton or, à moi aussi tes femmes et tes fils, les meilleurs!"
and says to him, “Thus said Ben-Hadad: Your silver and your gold are mine, and your wives and your sons—the best—are mine.”
4 Le roi d’Israël répondit: "Comme tu l’as dit, seigneur roi, je suis à toi, moi et tout ce qui m’appartient."
And the king of Israel answers and says, “According to your word, my lord, O king: I [am] yours, and all that I have.”
5 Les messagers revinrent et dirent: "Ainsi a parlé Ben-Hadad: Si je t’ai fait dire que tu dois me livrer ton argent et ton or, tes femmes et tes fils,
And the messengers turn back and say, “Thus spoke Ben-Hadad, saying, Surely I sent to you, saying, Your silver, and your gold, and your wives, and your sons, you give to me;
6 c’est qu’en effet, demain à pareille heure, j’enverrai mes serviteurs chez toi, qui fouilleront ta maison et les maisons de tes sujets, feront main basse sur tout ce que tu as de précieux et l’emporteront."
for if, at this time tomorrow, I send my servants to you, then they have searched your house, and the houses of your servants, and it has been [that] every desirable thing of your eyes they place in their hand, and have taken [them] away.”
7 Le roi d’Israël manda tous les anciens du pays et leur dit: "Sachez et considérez que cet homme a de mauvais desseins, car il m’a fait réclamer mes femmes et mes fils, mon argent et mon or, et je ne les lui ai pas refusés."
And the king of Israel calls to all [the] elderly of the land and says, “Please know and see that this [one] is seeking evil, for he sent to me for my wives, and for my sons, and for my silver, and for my gold, and I did not withhold from him.”
8 Tous les anciens et tout le peuple lui dirent: "Ne l’écoute pas, et ne consens point."
And all the elderly and all the people say to him, “Do not listen, nor consent.”
9 Il répondit alors aux envoyés de Ben-Hadad: "Déclarez à mon seigneur le roi: Tout ce que tu as fait dire en premier lieu à ton serviteur, je le ferai; mais cela je ne puis le faire." Les envoyés partirent et lui rapportèrent la réponse.
And he says to the messengers of Ben-Hadad, “Say to my lord the king, All that you sent to your servant for at the first I do, and this thing I am not able to do”; and the messengers go and take him back word.
10 Ben-Hadad lui fit dire: "Qu’ainsi me traitent les dieux et pis encore, si la poussière de Samarie suffit pour remplir les mains du peuple qui me suit!"
And Ben-Hadad sends to him and says, “Thus the gods do to me, and thus do they add, if the dust of Samaria suffice for handfuls for all the people who [are] at my feet.”
11 Le roi d’Israël fit transmettre cette réponse: "Celui qui ceint l’épée ne doit pas se vanter comme celui qui la dépose.
And the king of Israel answers and says, “Speak: Do not let him who is girding on boast himself as him who is loosing [his armor].”
12 En entendant cette réponse, Ben-Hadad, qui était en train de boire avec les rois sous les tentes, dit à ses serviteurs: "Préparez le siège." Et ils firent les apprêts contre la ville.
And it comes to pass at the hearing of this word—and he is drinking, he and the kings, in the shelters—that he says to his servants, “Set yourselves”; and they set themselves against the city.
13 Or, un prophète, s’avançant vers Achab, roi d’Israël, lui dit: "Ainsi parle l’Eternel: Tu vois toute cette grande multitude? Eh bien! Je te la livrerai en ce jour, et tu reconnaîtras que je suis l’Eternel.
And behold, a certain prophet has come near to Ahab king of Israel and says, “Thus said YHWH: Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, I am giving it into your hand today, and you have known that I [am] YHWH.”
14 Avec l’aide de qui?" demanda Achab. "Ainsi dit le Seigneur, répondit le prophète: Avec l’aide des jeunes gens des gouverneurs de provinces. Qui, reprit-il, engagera la lutte? Toi-même," fut la réponse.
And Ahab says, “By whom?” And he says, “Thus said YHWH: By the young men of the heads of the provinces”; and he says, “Who directs the battle?” And he says, “You.”
15 Alors il passa en revue les jeunes gens des gouverneurs de provinces, qui se trouvèrent au nombre de deux cent trente-deux, ensuite tout le peuple, tous les enfants d’Israël, au nombre de sept mille.
And he inspects the young men of the heads of the provinces, and they are two hundred and thirty-two, and after them he has mustered all the people, all the sons of Israel—seven thousand,
16 Ils firent une sortie à midi, tandis que Ben-Hadad buvait à s’enivrer sous la tente, avec les trente-deux rois, ses auxiliaires.
and they go out at noon, and Ben-Hadad is drinking—drunk in the shelters, he and the kings, the thirty-two kings helping him.
17 Les jeunes gens des gouverneurs de provinces sortirent les premiers. Ben-Hadad s’informa, et on lui fit savoir que des hommes étaient sortis de Samarie.
And the young men of the heads of the provinces go out at the first, and Ben-Hadad sends, and they declare to him, saying, “Men have come out of Samaria.”
18 "S’Ils viennent pour la paix, répondit-il, prenez-les vivants; s’ils viennent pour combattre, prenez-les aussi vivants."
And he says, “If they have come out for peace, catch them alive; and if they have come out for battle, catch them alive.”
19 Or, ils étaient, en effet, sortis de la ville, d’abord les jeunes gens des gouverneurs de provinces, puis la troupe qui les suivait.
And these have gone out of the city—the young men of the heads of the provinces—and the force that [is] after them,
20 Ils frappèrent chacun son homme; les Syriens s’enfuirent, poursuivis par les Israélites; Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, put s’échapper à cheval, avec quelques cavaliers.
and each strikes his man, and Aram flees, and Israel pursues them, and Ben-Hadad king of Aram escapes on a horse—and the horsemen;
21 Le roi d’Israël fit une sortie, battit chevaux et chars, et infligea aux Syriens une grande défaite.
and the king of Israel goes out, and strikes the horses, and the charioteers, and has struck among the Arameans a great striking.
22 Le prophète, abordant le roi d’Israël, lui dit: "Va, fortifie-toi, et avise à ce que tu dois faire, car, au retour de l’année, le roi de Syrie viendra t’attaquer."
And the prophet comes near to the king of Israel and says to him, “Go, strengthen yourself, and know and see that which you do, for at the turn of the year the king of Aram is coming up against you.”
23 Les serviteurs du roi de Syrie lui dirent: "Leur dieu est un dieu de montagnes, c’est pourquoi ils nous ont vaincus; mais attaquons-les en plaine, on verra si nous ne sommes pas les plus forts.
And the servants of the king of Aram said to him, “Their gods [are] gods of hills, therefore they were stronger than us; and yet, we fight with them in the plain—are we not stronger than they?
24 Voici encore ce que tu dois faire: écarte les rois, chacun de son poste, et mets des gouverneurs à leur place.
And this thing you do: turn aside each of the kings out of his place, and set captains in their stead;
25 Puis tu lèveras une armée égale à celle que tu as perdue, des chevaux et des chars aussi nombreux que les précédents, et nous les combattrons en plaine; on verra si nous n’avons pas le dessus." Il écouta leur avis et s’y conforma.
and you, number for yourself a force as the force that is fallen from you, and horse for horse, and chariot for chariot, and we fight with them in the plain; are we not stronger than they?” And he listens to their voice, and does so.
26 Au retour de l’année, Ben-Hadad passa en revue les Syriens, puis monta vers Afek pour attaquer Israël.
And it comes to pass at the turn of the year, that Ben-Hadad inspects the Arameans, and goes up to Aphek, to battle with Israel,
27 Les enfants d’Israël, ayant été passés en revue et approvisionnés, marchèrent à leur rencontre; ils campèrent vis-à-vis d’eux semblables à deux troupeaux de chèvres, tandis que les Syriens remplissaient la contrée.
and the sons of Israel have been inspected, and supported, and go to meet them, and the sons of Israel encamp before them, like two flocks of goats, and the Arameans have filled the land.
28 L’Homme de Dieu s’approcha et dit au roi d’Israël: "Ainsi a parlé l’Eternel: Puisque les Syriens ont dit: l’Eternel est un dieu de montagnes et n’est pas un dieu de vallées, je livrerai en ta main toute cette grande multitude; et vous saurez que je suis l’Eternel."
And a man of God comes near, and speaks to the king of Israel and says, “Thus said YHWH: Because that the Arameans have said, YHWH [is] God of [the] hills, but He [is] not God of [the] valleys—I have given the whole of this great multitude into your hand, and you have known that I [am] YHWH.”
29 Ils restèrent campés les uns vis-à-vis des autres durant sept jours. Le septième jour le combat s’engagea, et les Israélites battirent les Syriens, en leur tuant cent mille fantassins en un seul jour.
And they encamp opposite one another [for] seven days, and it comes to pass on the seventh day, that the battle draws near, and the sons of Israel strike one hundred thousand footmen of Aram in one day.
30 Le reste s’enfuit vers Afek, cherchant un refuge dans la ville; mais la muraille s’écroula sur les vingt-sept mille hommes qui avaient échappé, tandis que Ben-Hadad, réfugié dans la ville, se retirait de chambre en chambre.
And those left flee to Aphek, into the city, and the wall falls on twenty-seven chief men who are left, and Ben-Hadad has fled, and comes into the city, into the innermost part.
31 Ses serviteurs lui dirent: "Ecoute, de grâce: nous avons ouï dire que les rois de la maison d’Israël sont des rois généreux; eh bien! Entourons nos reins de cilices et nos têtes de cordes, et allons trouver le roi d’Israël. Peut-être épargnera—t-il ta vie."
And his servants say to him, “Now behold, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel—that they are kind kings; please let us put sackcloth on our loins and ropes on our heads, and we go out to the king of Israel; it may be he keeps you alive.”
32 Et les reins ainsi entourés de cilices et la tête de cordes, ils se présentèrent au roi d’Israël en disant: "Ton serviteur Ben-Hadad te demande de lui laisser la vie." Il répondit: "ll vit donc encore? Il est mon frère."
And they gird sackcloth on their loins, and ropes [are] on their heads, and they come to the king of Israel, and say, “Your servant Ben-Hadad has said, Please let me live”; and he says, “Is he still alive? He [is] my brother.”
33 Les hommes, augurant bien de cette parole, s’en emparèrent aussitôt et dirent: "Ben—Hadad est ton frère! Allez, dit le roi, amenez-le." Ben-Hadad s’avança vers lui, et il le fit monter sur son char.
And the men observe diligently, and hurry, and catch [the word] from him, and say, “Your brother Ben-Hadad”; and he says, “Go in, bring him”; and Ben-Hadad comes out to him, and he causes him to come up on the chariot.
34 Ben-Hadad lui dit: "Les villes que mon père a prises au tien, je les rendrai, et tu pourras te créer des routes à Damas, comme mon père en créa dans Samarie. Et moi, je te laisserai partir sous le bénéfice de ce traité." Et il lui dicta un traité, puis le laissa partir.
And he says to him, “The cities that my father took from your father, I give back, and you make streets for yourself in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria; and I, with a covenant, send you away”; and he makes a covenant with him, and sends him away.
35 Or, un des disciples des prophètes dit à son collègue, par l’ordre du Seigneur: "Frappe-moi, je te prie." L’Autre refusa de le frapper.
And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his neighbor by the word of YHWH, “Please strike me”; and the man refuses to strike him,
36 Il lui dit: "Puisque tu n’as pas écouté la parole du Seigneur, lorsque tu m’auras quitté, un lion t’attaquera". L’Ayant quitté, il rencontra un lion, qui le tua.
and he says to him, “Because that you have not listened to the voice of YHWH, behold, you are going from me, and the lion has struck you”; and he goes from him, and the lion finds him, and strikes him.
37 Ayant rencontré un autre homme, il lui dit: "Frappe-moi, je te prie." L’Homme le frappa, lui faisant mainte blessure.
And he finds another man and says, “Please strike me”; and the man strikes him, striking and wounding,
38 Le prophète alla se présenter devant le roi, sur son chemin; il était déguisé, avec un bandeau sur les yeux.
and the prophet goes and stands for the king on the way, and disguises himself with ashes on his eyes.
39 Lorsque le roi passa, il l’implora en disant: "Ton serviteur était allé au milieu de la bataille, lorsqu’un homme vint à lui et lui amena un prisonnier en disant: Surveille cet homme; s’il venait à manquer, ta vie répondrait pour la sienne, ou tu aurais à payer un kikkar d’argent.
And it comes to pass—the king is passing by—that he has cried to the king and says, “Your servant went out into the midst of the battle, and behold, a man has turned aside and brings a man to me, and says, Keep this man; if he is at all missing, then your life has been for his life, or you weigh out a talent of silver;
40 Or, ton serviteur était occupé de côté et d’autre, de sorte que l’homme s’est échappé." Le roi d’Israël lui dit: "C’Est ton arrêt, tu l’as prononcé toi-même."
and it comes to pass, your servant is working here and there, and he is not!” And the king of Israel says to him, “Your judgment [is] right; you have determined [it].”
41 Aussitôt l’autre ôta le bandeau de dessus ses yeux, et le roi reconnut en lui un des prophètes.
And he hurries and turns aside the ashes from off his eyes, and the king of Israel discerns him, that he [is] of the prophets,
42 Celui-ci lui dit: "Ainsi parle l’Eternel: Parce que tu as laissé partir celui que j’avais condamné, ta vie répondra pour la sienne, et ton peuple pour le sien."
and he says to him, “Thus said YHWH: Because you have sent away the man I devoted, out of [your] hand, even your life has been for his life, and your people for his people”;
43 Le roi d’Israël rentra chez lui, à Samarie, sombre et consterné.
and the king of Israel goes to his house, sulky and angry, and comes to Samaria.
