1 En ce temps-là, Ahiyya, fils de Jéroboam, tomba malade.

At that time, fell sick, Abijah son of Jeroboam.

2 Jéroboam dit à sa femme: "Va, je te prie, et déguise-toi, afin qu’on ne sache pas que tu es la femme de Jéroboam; tu te rendras à Silo, où demeure le prophète Ahiyya, celui qui a prédit que je régnerais sur ce peuple.

Then said Jeroboam to his wife—Arise, I pray thee, and feign thyself another, that it be not known, that, thou, art the wife of Jeroboam, —and thou shalt go thy way to Shiloh, lo! there, is Ahijah the prophet, who promised I should be king over this people;

3 Tu emporteras dix pains, des gâteaux et un pot de miel; tu te présenteras à lui, et il t’apprendra ce qui doit advenir de l’enfant."

and thou shall take with thee ten loaves, and cracknels, and a bottle of honey, and shalt go unto him, —he, will tell thee what shall befall the young man.

4 Se conformant à cette parole, la femme de Jéroboam s’en alla à Silo et pénétra dans la maison d’Ahiyya. Or, celui-ci ne pouvait la voir, car la vieillesse avait paralysé ses yeux.

And the wife of Jeroboam, did so, and arose, and went to Shiloh, and entered the house of Ahijah, —now, Ahijah, could not see, for his eyes were fixed, by reason of his old age.

5 Mais le Seigneur avait dit à Ahiyya: "La femme de Jéroboam va venir te consulter au sujet de son enfant malade; tu lui parleras de telle et telle façon; mais en t’abordant, elle se donnera comme étrangère."

But, Yahweh, had said unto Ahijah—Lo! the wife of Jeroboam, coming to enquire something of thee, concerning her son, for he is sick, thus and so, shalt thou speak unto her, —though, when she cometh in, she feign to be a stranger-woman.

6 En entendant le bruit de ses pas lorsqu’elle franchissait le seuil, Ahiyya lui dit: "Entre, épouse de Jéroboam! Pourquoi le déguiser? J’Ai reçu pour toi un message sévère.

So it came to pass, when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet, as she entered the doorway, that he said—Come in, thou wife of Jeroboam, —wherefore, is it that thou art feigning to be a stranger-woman, seeing that, I, am sent unto thee, with something hard to bear?

7 Va dire à Jéroboam: Ainsi parle l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël: Je t’avais élevé du milieu du peuple, je t’avais fait chef de mon peuple Israël;

Go, say to Jeroboam—Thus, saith Yahweh, God of Israel, Forasmuch as I exalted thee out of the midst of the people, —and gave thee to be leader over my people Israel;

8 j’avais arraché la royauté à la maison de David pour te l’octroyer à toi; mais tu n’as pas été comme mon serviteur David, qui a gardé mes commandements, qui m’a obéi de tout son cœur en faisant uniquement ce qui est droit à mes yeux.

and rent the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it to thee, —and yet thou hast not been like my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me, with all his heart, to do only that which was right in mine eyes;

9 Surpassant en perversité tous tes devanciers, tu t’es fait des dieux étrangers et des idoles de métal, pour m’outrager, et tu m’as rejeté bien loin de toi!

but hast made wicked thy doings beyond any who were before thee, —and hast gone and made thee ether gods, even molten images, to provoke me to anger, and hast cast, me, behind thy back,

10 C’Est pourquoi je susciterai le malheur à la maison de Jéroboam; je n’en épargnerai pas la plus infime créature, je ne lui laisserai ni retraite ni ressource en Israël, et je balaierai les derniers vestiges de la maison de Jéroboam comme on balaie à fond les ordures.

therefore, behold me! bringing misfortune against the house of Jeroboam, and I will cut off the meanest pertaining to Jeroboam, whether shut up or left at large, in Israel, —and will consume after the house of Jeroboam, as one consumeth dung, till it be all gone:

11 Ceux de Jéroboam qui mourront dans la ville seront dévorés par les chiens, et ceux qui mourront dans les campagnes seront la proie des oiseaux de l’air: c’est l’Eternel qui l’a dit.

Him that dieth of Jeroboam in the city, shall, the dogs, eat, and, him that dieth in the field, shall, the birds of heaven, eat, —For, Yahweh, hath spoken.

12 Pour toi, va, retourne en ta demeure; à ton premier pas dans la ville, l’enfant mourra.

Thou, therefore, arise, go to thine own house, —as thy feet are entering the city, the young man shall die.

13 Tout Israël mènera son deuil quand on l’ensevelira, car, seul de la maison de Jéroboam, il aura une sépulture, parce que l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, l’en a trouvé seul digne dans cette famille.

Then shall all Israel lament for him, and bury him, for, this one, pertaining to Jeroboam, shall reach a burying-place, —because there hath been found in him something good toward Yahweh, God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam.

14 Mais l’Eternel suscitera un roi d’Israël qui anéantira la maison de Jéroboam ce même jour, que dis-je? dès aujourd’hui.

Therefore will Yahweh raise up for himself a king over Israel, who will cut off the house of Jeroboam, this day, but why, even now?

15 L’Eternel frappera Israël, comme le roseau est ballotté dans l’eau; il arrachera Israël de ce beau pays qu’il a donné à leurs pères, il les dispersera par delà le fleuve, parce qu’ils ont, avec leurs achêrot, irrité le Seigneur.

Therefore will Yahweh smite Israel, as a reed shaketh in water, and will root out Israel, from off this goodly soil, which he gave unto their fathers, and will scatter them beyond the River (Euphrates), —because they have made their Sacred Stems, provoking Yahweh to anger:

16 Il traitera ainsi Israël, à cause des méfaits de Jéroboam, qu’il a commis et qu’il a fait commettre à Israël."

That he may deliver up Israel, —on account of the sin of Jeroboam, which he committed, and which he caused, Israel, to commit.

17 Là-dessus, la femme de Jéroboam se retira et se rendit à Tirça. Comme elle atteignit le seuil de la maison, le jeune garçon mourut.

Then arose the wife of Jeroboam, and went her way and entered Tirzah, —as, she, was coming into the entrance hall, the young man died.

18 On l’ensevelit, et tout Israël mena son deuil, selon la parole du Seigneur, transmise par son serviteur, le prophète Ahiyya.

And, when they buried him, all Israel lamented him, —according to the word of Yahweh, which he spake through his servant Ahijah the prophet.

19 Pour les autres faits concernant Jéroboam, ses guerres et son règne, ils sont consignés dans le livre des annales des rois d’Israël.

Now, the rest of the story of Jeroboam, how he warred, and how he reigned, behold them! written in the book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.

20 La durée du règne de Jéroboam fut de vingt-deux ans; après quoi, il s’endormit avec ses pères, et son fils Nadab lui succéda.

And, the days which Jeroboam reigned, were twenty-two years, —and he slept with his fathers, and, Nadab his son, reigned, in his stead.

21 Roboam, fils de Salomon, fut roi de Juda. Il avait quarante et un ans à son avènement, et il régna dix-sept ans à Jérusalem, la ville que le Seigneur avait choisie entre toutes les tribus d’Israël pour y faire dominer son nom. Sa mère se nommait Naama; elle était ammonite.

And, Rehoboam, son of Solomon, reigned in Judah, —forty-one years old, was Rehoboam when he began to reign, and seventeen years, reigned he in Jerusalem, the city which Yahweh had chosen to put his Name there, out of all the tribes of Israel, and, his mother’s name, was Naamah, the Ammonitess.

22 Les Judaïtes firent ce qui déplaît au Seigneur, et ils l’irritèrent plus que n’avaient jamais fait leurs pères, par les péchés qu’ils commirent.

And Judah did the thing that was wicked in the eyes of Yahweh, —and provoked him to jealousy, above all that their fathers had done, with their sins which they committed.

23 Ils érigèrent, eux aussi, des hauts-lieux, des monuments et des statues d’Astarté, sur toute colline élevée et sous tout arbre touffu.

And, they also, built for themselves high places and pillars, and Sacred Stems, —upon every high hill, and under every green tree.

24 Il y eut même des prostitués dans le pays, où l’on imita toutes les abominations des peuples que le Seigneur avait dépossédés en faveur des enfants d’Israël.

Moreover also, there were, male devotees, in the land, —they did according to all the abominable practices of the nations, which Yahweh dispossessed from before the sons of Israel.

25 Dans la cinquième année du règne de Roboam, Sésak, roi d’Egypte, vint attaquer Jérusalem.

And it came to pass, in the fifth year of King Rehoboam, that Shishak king of Egypt, came up against Jerusalem;

26 Il s’empara des trésors de la maison de Dieu, et de ceux de la maison du roi, et emporta le tout. Il enleva aussi tous les boucliers d’or qu’avait fait faire Salomon.

and took away the treasures of the house of Yahweh, and the treasures of the house of the king, yea, the whole, took he away, —and took away all the bucklers of gold, which, Solomon, had made.

27 Le roi Roboam les remplaça par des boucliers de cuivre, dont il confia la garde aux chefs des coureurs chargés de surveiller l’entrée du palais.

So King Rehoboam made, in their stead, bucklers of bronze, —and committed them unto the hand of the captains of the runners, who kept guard at the entrance of the house of the king.

28 Chaque fois que le roi se rendait à la maison de Dieu, les coureurs portaient ces boucliers, puis les replaçaient dans leur salle de service.

And so it was, whensoever the king went into the house of Yahweh, the runners bare them, and then brought them back into the chamber of the runners.

29 Pour le reste de l’histoire et des faits et gestes de Roboam, ils sont consignés dans le livre des annales des rois de Juda.

Now, the rest of the story of Rehoboam, and all that he did, are, they, not written in the book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?

30 Roboam et Jéroboam furent constamment en guerre.

And there was, war, between Rehoboam and Jeroboam, continually.

31 Roboam s’endormit avec ses pères et fut enterré auprès d’eux dans la Cité de David. Sa mère, une Ammonite, s’appelait Naama. Il eut pour successeur son fils Abiam.

So then Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David, and, the name of his mother, was Naamah the Ammonitess, —and, Abijah his son, reigned, in his stead.
