1 Chroniques 21
1 Satan, cherchant à nuire à Israël, incita David à en ordonner le dénombrement.
An adversary arose against Israel and incited David to count Israel.
2 David dit donc à Joab et aux chefs du peuple: "Allez recenser Israël depuis Bersabée jusqu’à Dan, et apportez-moi le relevé, pour que je sache quel chiffre il atteint."
David said to Joab and to the commanders of the army, “Go, count the people of Israel from Beersheba to Dan and report back to me, that I may know their number.”
3 Joab répondit: "Ah! que l’Eternel multiplie son peuple au centuple de ce qu’il est! Tous, mon seigneur et roi, ne sont-ils pas tes serviteurs? Pourquoi mon maître demande-t-il pareille chose? Pourquoi charger Israël d’un tel péché?"
Joab said, “May Yahweh make his army a hundred times greater than it is. But my master the king, do they not all serve my master? Why does my master want this? Why bring guilt on Israel?”
4 Mais le roi maintint l’ordre donné à Joab. Celui-ci se mit en route, parcourut tout Israël, puis revint à Jérusalem.
But the king's word was enforced against Joab. So Joab left and went throughout all Israel. Then he came back to Jerusalem.
5 Joab remit à David le résultat du dénombrement du peuple: tout Israël comptait onze cent mille hommes, pouvant tirer l’épée, et Juda comptait quatre cent soixante-dix mille hommes, pouvant tirer l’épée.
Then Joab reported the total of the count of the fighting men to David. There were in Israel 1,100,000 men who drew the sword. Judah alone had 470,000 soldiers.
6 Quant à Lévi et à Benjamin, il ne les avait pas compris dans le dénombrement, l’ordre du roi ayant été odieux à Joab.
But Levi and Benjamin were not counted among them, for the king's command had disgusted Joab.
7 Cette entreprise déplut aux yeux de Dieu, et il sévit contre Israël.
God was offended by this action, so he attacked Israel.
8 Alors David dit à Dieu: "J’Ai gravement péché par ma conduite. Et maintenant daigne pardonner le méfait de ton serviteur, car j’ai agi bien follement!"
David said to God, “I have greatly sinned by doing this. Now take away your servant's guilt, for I have acted very foolishly.”
9 La parole de l’Eternel s’adressa en ces termes à Gad, le Voyant de David:
Yahweh told Gad, David's prophet,
10 "Va dire à David: Ainsi a parlé le Seigneur: Je te propose trois calamités; tu en choisiras une, que je t’infligerai."
“Go say to David, 'This is what Yahweh says: I am giving you three choices. Choose one of them.'”
11 Gad alla trouver David et lui dit: "Résigne-toi
So Gad went to David and said to him, “Yahweh says this, 'Choose one of these:
12 soit à trois années de famine, soit à trois mois de revers, infligés par tes adversaires, et de ravages causés par l’épée de tes ennemis, soit à trois jours de glaive brandi par l’Eternel, de peste dans le pays et de ruines opérées par l’Ange du Seigneur dans tout le territoire d’Israël. Décide immédiatement la réponse que je dois rendre à qui m’envoie!"
either three years of famine, three months being pursued by your enemies and being caught by their swords, or else three days of Yahweh's sword, that is, a plague in the land, with the angel of Yahweh destroying throughout all the land of Israel.' Now then, decide what answer I should take to the one who sent me.”
13 David répondit à Gad: "Mon anxiété est grande… mais j’aime mieux me livrer à la main de l’Eternel, car il est plein de miséricorde, plutôt que de tomber dans la main de l’homme."
Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress! Let me fall into the hand of Yahweh rather than into the hand of man, for his merciful actions are very great.”
14 Le Seigneur fit alors sévir la peste en Israël, et il tomba en Israël soixante-dix mille hommes.
So Yahweh sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand people died.
15 Puis Dieu envoya un messager divin à Jérusalem pour la ravager, et, comme il se livrait à l’œuvre de destruction, le Seigneur vit et fut ému de cette calamité, et il dit à l’ange destructeur: "Assez! Retire maintenant ta main!" L’Ange du Seigneur se trouvait alors près de l’aire d’Ornan, le Jébuséen.
God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As he was about to destroy it, Yahweh watched and changed his mind about the harm. He said to the destroying angel, “Enough! Now draw back your hand.” At that time the angel of Yahweh was standing at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
16 David leva les yeux et vit l’ange du Seigneur placé entre ciel et terre, tenant en main son épée dirigée contre Jérusalem. Aussitôt David et les anciens se jetèrent la face contre terre, revêtus de cilices.
David looked up and saw the angel of Yahweh standing between earth and heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand raised over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, lay facedown on the ground.
17 Et David dit à Dieu: "N’Est-ce pas moi qui ai donné l’ordre de dénombrer le peuple? C’Est moi qui ai péché, c’est moi qui suis grandement coupable, mais qu’ont fait ces brebis? Eternel, mon Dieu, de grâce, que ta main ne frappe que moi et ma famille, mais ne laisse pas le fléau s’abattre sur le peuple!"
David said to God, “Is it not I that commanded that the army be numbered? I did this wicked thing. But these sheep, what have they done? Yahweh my God! Let your hand strike me and my family, but do not let the plague remain on your people.”
18 Un messager du Seigneur dit à Gad d’engager David à aller élever un autel de l’Eternel sur l’aire d’Ornan, le Jébuséen.
So the angel of Yahweh commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up and build an altar for Yahweh at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
19 David s’y rendit sur le conseil de Gad, qui avait parlé au nom de l’Eternel.
So David went up as Gad instructed him to do in the name of Yahweh.
20 Comme Ornan se retournait, il aperçut l’ange; ses quatre fils qui étaient auprès de lui se cachèrent, tandis qu’Ornan était occupé à battre le blé.
While Ornan was threshing wheat, he turned and saw the angel. He and his four sons with him hid themselves.
21 David s’avança vers Ornan; celui-ci, levant les yeux, le vit; il sortit aussitôt de l’aire et se prosterna devant David, la face contre terre.
When David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David. He left the threshing floor and bowed to David with his face to the ground.
22 David dit à Ornan: "Cède-moi l’emplacement de ton aire pour que j’y bâtisse un autel au Seigneur; cède-le moi pour argent comptant, et puisse la mortalité qui décime le peuple s’arrêter!"
Then David said to Ornan, “Sell me this threshing floor, so I can build an altar for Yahweh. I will pay the full price, so that the plague may be removed from the people.”
23 Ornan répondit à David: "Accepte-le plutôt, et que le roi mon maître fasse ce qui peut lui être agréable! Vois, je mets à ta disposition les bœufs pour en faire des holocaustes, les traîneaux pour servir de bois et le froment pour l’oblation: j’offre tout."
Ornan said to David, “Take it as your own, my master the king. Do with it what is good in your sight. Look, I will give you oxen for burnt offerings, threshing sledges for wood, and wheat for the grain offering; I will give it all to you.”
24 "Non, répondit le roi David à Ornan, je prétends tout acheter pour argent comptant, car je ne veux rien accepter de ce qui est à toi pour honorer l’Eternel ni lui offrir un holocauste sans bourse délier."
King David said to Ornan, “No, I insist on buying it for the full price. I will not take what is yours and offer it as a burnt offering to Yahweh if it costs me nothing.”
25 David donna donc à Ornan pour l’emplacement des sicles d’or, au nombre de six cents.
So David paid six hundred shekels of gold for the place.
26 Il érigea là un autel au Seigneur, y offrit des holocaustes et des rémunératoires; il invoqua l’Eternel, qui l’exauça, en faisant descendre le feu du ciel sur l’autel de l’holocauste.
David built an altar for Yahweh there and offered on it burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on Yahweh, who answered him with fire from heaven on the altar for burnt offerings.
27 Le Seigneur ordonna à l’ange de remettre son épée au fourreau.
Then Yahweh gave an order to the angel, and the angel put his sword back into its sheath.
28 Alors David, voyant que l’Eternel l’avait exaucé dans l’aire d’Ornan, le Jébuséen, se mit à y faire des sacrifices.
When David saw that Yahweh had answered him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he performed the sacrifice there at that same time.
29 Or, le tabernacle que Moïse avait construit dans le désert et l’autel des holocaustes se trouvaient à cette époque sur la hauteur de Gabaon.
Now at that time, Yahweh's tabernacle, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar for burnt offerings, were at the high place at Gibeon.
30 Et David n’osait s’y présenter pour aller consulter Dieu, car il était effrayé par le glaive de l’ange du Seigneur.
However, David could not go there to ask for God's direction, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of Yahweh.
