Psaumes 140
1 Au chef de musique. Psaume de David. Éternel! délivre-moi de l’homme mauvais, préserve-moi de l’homme violent,
“To the chief musician, a psalm of David.” Deliver me, O Lord, from an evil man; from a man of violence do thou keep me;
2 Qui méditent le mal dans leur cœur: tous les jours ils s’assemblent pour la guerre;
Who think over evil [resolves] in their heart, [who] every day are gathered together for war.
3 Ils affilent leur langue comme un serpent, il y a du venin d’aspic sous leurs lèvres. (Sélah)
They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent: the poison of the adder is under their lips. (Selah)
4 Éternel! garde-moi des mains du méchant, préserve-moi de l’homme violent, qui méditent de faire trébucher mes pas.
Preserve me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked, from the man of violence do thou keep me, who think of overthrowing my steps.
5 Les orgueilleux m’ont caché un piège et des cordes, ils ont étendu un filet le long du chemin, ils m’ont dressé des lacets. (Sélah)
The proud have hidden a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the side of [my] track; traps have they set for me. (Selah)
6 J’ai dit à l’Éternel: Tu es mon Dieu. Prête l’oreille, ô Éternel, à la voix de mes supplications!
I have said unto the Lord, Thou art my God: give ear, O Lord, to the voice of my supplications.
7 L’Éternel, le Seigneur, est la force de mon salut; tu as couvert ma tête au jour des armes.
O thou Eternal Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head on the day of battle.
8 N’accorde pas, ô Éternel! les souhaits du méchant, ne fais pas réussir son dessein: ils s’élèveraient. (Sélah)
Grant not, O Lord, the longings of the wicked; suffer not his wicked device to succeed: lest they exalt themselves. (Selah)
9 Quant à la tête de ceux qui m’environnent, … que le mal de leurs lèvres les couvre,
[As for] the heads of those that encompass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.
10 Que des charbons ardents tombent sur eux! Fais-les tomber dans le feu, dans des eaux profondes, et qu’ils ne se relèvent pas!
Let burning coals be cast upon them: let them be thrown into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.
11 Que l’homme à [mauvaise] langue ne soit point établi dans le pays: l’homme violent, le mal le poussera à sa ruine.
Let not the man of an [evil] tongue be established on the earth: may evil hunt down the violent man to his downfall.
12 Je sais que l’Éternel maintiendra la cause de l’affligé, le jugement des pauvres.
I know that the Lord will procure right for the afflicted, [and] justice for the needy.
13 Certainement, les justes célébreront ton nom, les hommes droits habiteront devant toi.
Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell before thy presence.
