1 Et Balaam dit à Balak: Bâtis-moi ici sept autels, et prépare-moi ici sept taureaux et sept béliers.

And Balaam saith unto Balak, 'Build for me in this [place] seven altars, and make ready for me in this [place] seven bullocks and seven rams.'

2 Et Balak fit comme Balaam avait dit; et Balak et Balaam offrirent un taureau et un bélier sur [chaque] autel.

And Balak doth as Balaam hath spoken, and Balak — Balaam also — offereth a bullock and a ram on the altar,

3 Et Balaam dit à Balak: Tiens-toi auprès de ton offrande, et je m’en irai; peut-être que l’Éternel viendra à ma rencontre, et ce qu’il m’aura fait voir je te le rapporterai. Et il s’en alla sur une hauteur découverte.

and Balaam saith to Balak, 'Station thyself by thy burnt-offering and I go on, it may be Jehovah doth come to meet me, and the thing which He sheweth me — I have declared to thee;' and he goeth [to] a high place.

4 Et Dieu rencontra Balaam, et [Balaam] lui dit: J’ai préparé sept autels, et j’ai offert un taureau et un bélier sur [chaque] autel.

And God cometh unto Balaam, and he saith unto Him, 'The seven altars I have arranged, and I offer a bullock and a ram on the altar;'

5 Et l’Éternel mit une parole dans la bouche de Balaam, et dit: Retourne vers Balak, et tu parleras ainsi.

and Jehovah putteth a word in the mouth of Balaam, and saith, 'Turn back unto Balak, and thus thou dost speak.'

6 Et il s’en retourna vers lui; et voici, il se tenait auprès de son offrande, lui et tous les seigneurs de Moab.

And he turneth back unto him, and lo, he is standing by his burnt-offering, he and all the princes of Moab.

7 Et [Balaam] proféra son discours sentencieux, et dit: Balak, roi de Moab, m’a amené d’Aram, des montagnes d’orient: Viens, maudis-moi Jacob! viens, appelle l’exécration sur Israël!

And he taketh up his simile, and saith: 'From Aram he doth lead me — Balak king of Moab; From mountains of the east: Come — curse for me Jacob, And come — be indignant [with] Israel.

8 Comment maudirai-je ce que Dieu n’a pas maudit? Et comment appellerai-je l’exécration sur celui que l’Éternel n’a pas en exécration?

What — do I pierce? — God hath not pierced! And what — am I indignant? — Jehovah hath not been indignant!

9 Car du sommet des rochers je le vois, et des hauteurs je le contemple. Voici, c’est un peuple qui habitera seul, et il ne sera pas compté parmi les nations.

For from the top of rocks I see it, And from heights I behold it; Lo a people! alone it doth tabernacle, And among nations doth not reckon itself.

10 Qui est-ce qui comptera la poussière de Jacob, et le nombre de la quatrième partie d’Israël? Que mon âme meure de la mort des hommes droits, et que ma fin soit comme la leur.

Who hath counted the dust of Jacob, And the number of the fourth of Israel? Let me die the death of upright ones, And let my last end be like his!'

11 Et Balak dit à Balaam: Que m’as-tu fait? Je t’avais pris pour maudire mes ennemis, et voici, tu les as bénis expressément.

And Balak saith unto Balaam, 'What hast thou done to me? to pierce mine enemies I have taken thee — and lo, thou hast certainly blessed;'

12 Et il répondit et dit: Ne prendrai-je pas garde de dire ce que l’Éternel aura mis dans ma bouche?

and he answereth and saith, 'That which Jehovah doth put in my mouth — it do I not take heed to speak?'

13 Et Balak lui dit: Viens, je te prie, avec moi, dans un autre lieu d’où tu puisses le voir; tu n’en verras que l’extrémité, et tu ne le verras pas tout entier; et maudis-le-moi de là.

And Balak saith unto him, 'Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, whence thou dost see it, only its extremity thou dost see, and all of it thou dost not see, and pierce it for me thence;'

14 Et il le conduisit au champ de Tsophim, au sommet du Pisga, et il bâtit sept autels, et offrit un taureau et un bélier sur [chaque] autel.

and he taketh him [to] the field of Zophim, unto the top of Pisgah, and buildeth seven altars, and offereth a bullock and a ram on the altar.

15 Et [Balaam] dit à Balak: Tiens-toi ici auprès de ton offrande, et moi, j’irai à la rencontre, là…

And he saith unto Balak, 'Station thyself here by thy burnt-offering, and I — I meet [Him] there;'

16 Et l’Éternel vint à la rencontre de Balaam, et mit une parole dans sa bouche, et dit: Retourne vers Balak, et tu parleras ainsi.

and Jehovah cometh unto Balaam, and setteth a word in his mouth, and saith, 'Turn back unto Balak, and thus thou dost speak.'

17 Et il vint à lui, et voici, il se tenait auprès de son offrande, et les seigneurs de Moab avec lui. Et Balak lui dit: Qu’a dit l’Éternel?

And he cometh unto him, and lo, he is standing by his burnt-offering, and the princes of Moab with him, and Balak saith to him: 'What hath Jehovah spoken?'

18 Et il proféra son discours sentencieux, et dit: Lève-toi, Balak, et écoute! Prête-moi l’oreille, fils de Tsippor!

And he taketh up his simile, and saith: 'Rise, Balak, and hear; Give ear unto me, son of Zippor!

19 Dieu n’est pas un homme, pour mentir, ni un fils d’homme, pour se repentir: aura-t-il dit, et ne fera-t-il pas? aura-t-il parlé, et ne l’accomplira-t-il pas?

God [is] not a man — and lieth, And a son of man — and repenteth! Hath He said — and doth He not do [it]? And spoken — and doth He not confirm it?

20 Voici, j’ai reçu [mission] de bénir; il a béni et je ne le révoquerai pas.

Lo, to bless I have received: Yea, He blesseth, and I [can] not reverse it.

21 Il n’a pas aperçu d’iniquité en Jacob, ni n’a vu d’injustice en Israël; l’Éternel, son Dieu, est avec lui, et un chant de triomphe royal est au milieu de lui.

He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob, Nor hath He seen perverseness in Israel; Jehovah his God [is] with him, And a shout of a king [is] in him.

22 Dieu les a fait sortir d’Égypte; il a comme la force des buffles.

God is bringing them out from Egypt, As the swiftness of a Reem is to him;

23 Car il n’y a pas d’enchantement contre Jacob, ni de divination contre Israël. Selon ce temps il sera dit de Jacob et d’Israël: Qu’est-ce que Dieu a fait?

For no enchantment [is] against Jacob, Nor divination against Israel, At the time it is said of Jacob and Israel, What hath God wrought!

24 Voici, le peuple se lèvera comme une lionne, et se dressera comme un lion; il ne se couchera pas qu’il n’ait mangé la proie, et bu le sang des tués.

Lo, the people as a lioness riseth, And as a lion he lifteth himself up, He lieth not down till he eateth prey, And blood of pierced ones doth drink.'

25 Et Balak dit à Balaam: Ne le maudis donc pas; mais du moins ne le bénis pas.

And Balak saith unto Balaam, 'Neither pierce it at all, nor bless it at all;'

26 Et Balaam répondit et dit à Balak: Ne t’ai-je pas parlé, disant: Tout ce que l’Éternel dira, je le ferai?

and Balaam answereth and saith unto Balak, 'Have I not spoken unto thee, saying, All that Jehovah speaketh — it I do?'

27 Et Balak dit à Balaam: Viens donc, je te conduirai à un autre lieu: peut-être sera-t-il bon aux yeux de Dieu que tu me le maudisses de là.

And Balak saith unto Balaam, 'Come, I pray thee, I take thee unto another place; it may be it is right in the eyes of God — to pierce it for me from thence.'

28 Et Balak conduisit Balaam au sommet du Péor, qui se montre au-dessus de la surface du désert.

And Balak taketh Balaam to the top of Peor, which is looking on the front of the wilderness,

29 Et Balaam dit à Balak: Bâtis-moi ici sept autels, et prépare-moi ici sept taureaux et sept béliers.

and Balaam saith unto Balak, 'Build for me in this [place] seven altars, and make ready for me in this [place] seven bullocks and seven rams;'

30 Et Balak fit comme Balaam avait dit; et il offrit un taureau et un bélier sur [chaque] autel.

and Balak doth as Balaam said, and he offereth a bullock and a ram on an altar.
