Genèse 20

1 Et Abraham s’en alla de là au pays du midi, et habita entre Kadès et Shur, et séjourna à Guérar.

Afterward Abraham departed thence toward the South countrey and dwelled betweene Cadesh and Shur, and soiourned in Gerar.

2 Et Abraham dit de Sara, sa femme: Elle est ma sœur. Et Abimélec, roi de Guérar, envoya et prit Sara.

And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister. Then Abimelech King of Gerar sent and tooke Sarah.

3 Et Dieu vint vers Abimélec la nuit, dans un songe, et lui dit: Voici, tu es mort à cause de la femme que tu as prise, car elle est une femme mariée.

But God came to Abimelech in a dreame by night, and said to him, Beholde, thou art but dead, because of the woman, which thou hast taken: for she is a mans wife.

4 Or Abimélec ne s’était pas approché d’elle; et il dit: Seigneur, feras-tu périr même une nation juste?

(Notwithstanding Abimelech had not yet come neere her) And he said, Lord, wilt thou slay euen the righteous nation?

5 Ne m’a-t-il pas dit: Elle est ma sœur? Et elle-même m’a dit: Il est mon frère. J’ai fait cela dans l’intégrité de mon cœur et dans l’innocence de mes mains.

Said not he vnto me, She is my sister? yea, and she her selfe said, He is my brother: with an vpright minde, and innocent handes haue I done this.

6 Et Dieu lui dit en songe: Moi aussi je sais que tu as fait cela dans l’intégrité de ton cœur, et aussi je t’ai retenu de pécher contre moi; c’est pourquoi je n’ai pas permis que tu la touches.

And God saide vnto him by a dreame, I knowe that thou diddest this euen with an vpright minde, and I kept thee also that thou shouldest not sinne against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touche her.

7 Et maintenant, rends la femme de cet homme; car il est prophète, et il priera pour toi, et tu vivras. Mais si tu ne la rends pas, sache que tu mourras certainement, toi et tout ce qui est à toi.

Now then deliuer the man his wife againe: for he is a Prophet, and he shall pray for thee that thou mayest liue: but if thou deliuer her not againe, be sure that thou shalt die the death, thou, and all that thou hast.

8 Et Abimélec se leva de bon matin, et appela tous ses serviteurs, et dit toutes ces paroles à leurs oreilles; et ces hommes eurent une grande peur.

Then Abimelech rising vp early in ye morning, called all his seruants, and tolde all these things vnto them, and the men were sore afraid.

9 Et Abimélec appela Abraham, et lui dit: Que nous as-tu fait? et en quoi ai-je péché contre toi, que tu aies fait venir sur moi et sur mon royaume un grand péché? Tu as fait à mon égard des choses qui ne doivent pas se faire.

Afterward Abimelech called Abraham, and said vnto him, What hast thou done vnto vs? and what haue I offeded thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdome this great sinne? thou hast done things vnto me that ought not to be done.

10 Et Abimélec dit à Abraham: Qu’as-tu vu pour avoir fait ainsi?

So Abimelech said vnto Abraham, What sawest thou that thou hast done this thing?

11 Et Abraham dit: C’est parce que je disais: Assurément il n’y a point de crainte de Dieu en ce lieu, et ils me tueront à cause de ma femme.

Then Abraham answered, Because I thought thus, Surely the feare of God is not in this place, and they will slay me for my wiues sake.

12 Et aussi, à la vérité, elle est ma sœur, fille de mon père; seulement elle n’est pas fille de ma mère, et elle est devenue ma femme.

Yet in very deede she is my sister: for she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she is my wife.

13 Et il est arrivé, lorsque Dieu m’a fait errer loin de la maison de mon père, que je lui ai dit: Voici la grâce que tu me feras: Dans tous les lieux où nous arriverons, dis de moi: Il est mon frère.

Nowe when God caused me to wander out of my fathers house, I said then to her, This is thy kindnes that thou shalt shewe vnto me in all places where we come, Say thou of me, He is my brother.

14 Et Abimélec prit du menu bétail et du gros bétail, et des serviteurs et des servantes, et il les donna à Abraham, et lui rendit Sara, sa femme;

Then tooke Abimelech sheepe and beeues, and men seruants, and women seruants, and gaue them vnto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.

15 et Abimélec dit: Voici, mon pays est devant toi; habite où il te plaira.

And Abimelech saide, Beholde, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee.

16 Et à Sara il dit: Voici, j’ai donné 1 000 [pièces] d’argent à ton frère; voici, cela te sera une couverture des yeux pour tous ceux qui sont avec toi, et pour tous. Ainsi elle fut reprise.

Likewise to Sarah he said, Beholde, I haue giuen thy brother a thousand pieces of siluer: behold, he is the vaile of thine eyes to all that are with thee, and to all others: and she was thus reproued.

17 Et Abraham pria Dieu, et Dieu guérit Abimélec, et sa femme et ses servantes, et elles eurent des enfants:

Then Abraham prayed vnto God, and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his women seruants: and they bare children.

18 car l’Éternel avait entièrement fermé toute matrice de la maison d’Abimélec, à cause de Sara, femme d’Abraham.

For the Lord had shut vp euery wombe of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abrahams wife.
